The photo of the 74-year-old Manson was taken Wednesday as part of a routine update of files on inmates at Corcoran State Prison, where he is serving a life sentence for conspiring to murder seven people, said Seth Unger, spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The cult leader was first sentenced to death for the 1969 murders of movie star Sharon Tate, coffee heiress Abigail Folger and three others stabbed and shot to death at Tate's home in Los Angeles. The next night, two others were stabbed to death at their homes.
The image - complete with a swastika carved into Manson's forehead - was released to the Los Angeles Times because the newspaper requested a copy the next time it was taken.
Manson's co-defendants - Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten, Patricia Krenwinkel and Charles "Tex" Watson - were convicted with him. Their death sentences were commuted to life when the death penalty was briefly outlawed in America in 1972.
Manson was born in Cincinnati and spent his early years in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia, according to Helter Skelter, the book by prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi about the Tate murders.

- I can't believe I actually read some disgusting Republican saying he respects Manson, a psycho mass murderer, more than Obama. Thank God American wised up and voted that disgusting party out of office. I find conservatives down right scary and I hope they release Manson and he kills the entire family of the idiot that posted that and we'll see how much he respects Manson then. Some of you conservatives are just as twisted and sick as Manson. I hope the Repugs are NEVER in office again and I don't think they will be a Repug prez for a long, long time after what Bush, Bush, Regan, Nixon and so on has destroyed this country. The GOP is so hateful they bring up Obama for no reason. They should all be looked up with this nutcase Manson since they love him so much.

- I know it's not a popular thing to say but I feel sorry for Charles Manson. Yes, I am sad for all of the victims and so on. But just to see a man waste his life like is is just heartbreaking to me. I see a broken old man in this picture who did nothing but cause pain in his life. I read about his life and it explains why he turned out the way he did. Its no excuse but it does explain it. I'm not saying he should be freed he should be locked up until he is dead but just the fact that he's been there for 40 years, I don't know why but it makes me sad. What a waste of a life.

- Please don't read this as if I am an apologist for Manson. He is where he should be, or perhaps he should have been executed. However, I don't recall if he actually killed anyone. I know he manipulated a bunch of crazy folks to do the killing, but I am unaware of him actually doing the killing. Can anyone comment one way or the other?

- The baldness of Manson doesn't change what he is, he is a mass murderer who
manipulated others to do his bidding for him. I am still haunted by these deaths of
Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger and the others who sacrificed by this sick
excuse of a human being. They've had almost 40yrs of living, what about the Tate-
Labianca victims. Their lives were cut short because of this sick idiot, who scared a
nation, even a president was scared by this cult group. They should have been executed
years ago. That way we wouldn't be hearing about these cold blooded killers 40yrs later. - Reply to this comment

I did have a slurp of coffee when I was a little girl. Yuuuukkky. Did you ever see that movie called "Mr. Big", with Tom Hanks? When he took a bite of caviar?, and he couldn't get it out of his mouth fast enough? And he was using a napkin to try and clean out his mouth? That was me. : ) - Reply to this comment

- Alright for one he is not bald, he just has his hair cut really short. It is obvious if you look. The follicles are still there.

- Maybe we had some sort of barrage of cosmic radiation overnight that leeched the caffeine out of everyone.

Nah, it can't be that, cause I don't drink anything with caffeine in it. - Reply to this comment
- He was scary then and he's still scary now. I remember the days all of his crimes were headline news. I'd like it is he'd pass on to his just rewards, but perhaps living is his just rewards? UGH!

- He killed a bunch of rich people! I though all you LiberCrapts would have annointed him Umpire or King or or something by now. Isn`t that the goal of the Obamanites, to kill all the rich people?

- California want the death penalty re-instated, then it's up to them to see that it gets reinstated. It probably costs more annually to keep this bazturd in prison than most people make. I would have iced him years ago.

California has the death penalty. - Reply to this comment
- Actually manson was convicted of eight counts of first degree murder. Seven of those counts were under the felony murder rule. The eight count was a murder he commited with Susan Atkins.
His survivial was the artfact of a State Supereme court case decided in 1972. Had he been convicted after 1976 he would now be history.
He is a unrepentant serial killer who needs to remain locked up for the rest of his life. - Reply to this comment
- Manson has the supremely p***ed-off look of someone who has not had things his way in four decades -- muhahahahaha!

- That's what communist dictator Obama will look like in two years. The only difference is that as much as I despise Manson, I still respect him more than spineless Obama.

- Why are people even talking about Obama or his administration on this message board? what does he have to do with Charles Manson? You people who are taking every single opportunity to bash Obama are so irritating. Get over it already!
