Nickelodeon said it has no plans to remove Chris Brown as a nominee for its annual Kids' Choice Awards, despite the singer's felony charges for allegedly beating up his girlfriend Rihanna.
Brown is nominated for favorite male singer and favorite song for "Kiss Kiss." Rihanna, who police say was allegedly punched, bitten and choked by Brown in the early morning hours before last month's Grammy Awards, is nominated for best song, too.
An online petition asking Nickelodeon to remove Brown and Rihanna as nominees had 4,655 signatures Tuesday.Photos: Rihanna
"Like all our KCA nominees, Chris Brown was nominated by kids several months ago based on his body of work as a performer, and the kids who vote will ultimately decide who wins in the category," Dan Martinsen, Nickelodeon spokesman, said.Photos: Chris Brown
The awards show is scheduled for March 28. It is usually Nick's biggest event of the year for its youthful audience, and Dwayne Johnson, the former wrestler turned actor, is the host.
Nick said it has gotten hundreds of calls protesting the nomination. Brown was nominated before the incident with Rihanna, and the honor had received little notice until the singer posted a note last week on his Facebook urging his fans to vote for him.
The online petitioners say Brown's name "should have been removed from contention" the moment the charges were filed. Rihanna is named in their petition because she hasn't broken off her relationship with Brown, the petitioners said.
Nickelodeon drew up its list of award nominees from surveys its young viewers completed late last year, the network said. The nominees were announced on Feb. 6 - two days before the Grammys.
People can vote through Nick's Web site on the awards as often as they want until shortly before the ceremony airs live in two and a half weeks. Besides Rihanna, Brown is competing with Beyonce and Katy Perry in the best song competition. Other male singer nominees are Jesse McCartney, Kid Rock and T-Pain.
Nick said that whoever gets the most votes in their category wins the award. However, the network doesn't announce the vote totals, so there is no way to independently verify the winners.
Brown isn't the only nominee with a whiff of controversy. Michael Phelps, nominated as favorite male athlete, was photographed smoking from a marijuana pipe last fall.
In other Brown news, hip-hop singer, Akon, says he'd work with him, despite the 19-year-old's legal troubles and public image problem.
Akon says he doesn't condone domestic violence. But he also says Brown is human and people make mistakes, and he doesn't think Brown's career should be on hold because of it.
He also says Brown will learn from his experience and hopefully treat the next woman differently.
Brown is charged with two felonies for allegedly beating girlfriend Rihanna. Since the attack, Brown has seen his endorsement deals fade away and some radio stations have stopped playing his music.

- Notice that HE withdrew his name, not Nickelodion taking the initiave to remove this batterer attempted murder suspect from an award!!!
I am beyond shocked that Nickelodion, a KIDS channel would even have considered keeping htis freak in the awards things at all!
This guy beat the krap out of this woman, I heard it described on a talk show last night, 2 black eyes, beat her head against the car window till she spit blood on the dash, put her in a choke hold that almost caused her death- before she almost went unconscious from her carotid arteries being occluded she scratched his face and he BIT her fingers. Then continued to beat her.
At one point she got a cell phone and pretended to reach someone and said to have the police meet us, the monster then theatened to KILL her and continued beating up on her.
This freak belongs in jail not an awards program by a children's channel! - Reply to this comment

- Parents - please do expect Nickelodeon to parent. They are a business. It is the parent's responsibility to teach their children the moral code they wish them to live by. If you as a parent believe it is unacceptable for Mr. Brown to be on the award list, then explain this to your children. Take this opportunity to teach your children that the kind of behavior Mr. Brown displayed is absolutely morally wrong (whether or not it is determined to be criminally wrong), and, as such, do not allow your children to go on the Nickelodeon website, do not allow them to vote, do not allow them to watch Nickelodeon, and do not allow them to listen to Mr. Brown's music. You are the parent - so please, parent your children.
