  • Video Peays Sing 'Beautiful Things'

The Peay family performs the "Dr. Doolittle" classic "Beautiful Things" for this week's Singing Family Face Off competition.

(CBS)  After the big announcement that The Oswald Brothers Band had won the Early Show viewer vote in the first finalists' match-up in the show's "Singing Family Face Off" competition, it was time to move on to the second: the Peays against the Lorentzens.

The Peays Band consists of four brothers from Greensboro, N.C.

Taimine, Katif, Majid and Solomon Peay often sing a cappella, with their mom, Joyce Peay, behind them all the way.

Whether in church or at local 4-H gatherings, the Peay brothers have sung, together and often, most of their lives.

Joyce acts as their manager. Their father passed away when they were younger, but remains a big influence in their music.

The Lorentzens, whose specialty is harmonizing, hail from Sparks, right outside Reno, Nev. The group is made up of sisters Kathryn, 14, Lisa, 16, and Anne, 19, as well as their brother, Mark, 23.

"We've been singing together-- for about 12, 14 years," says Anne.

"Some people," Mark chimed in, "like to ride dirt bikes, we like to sing."

Both families had to pick the number they'd do in their face off from a list presented to them by the show. The musical genre of the songs on the list: show tunes, as determined last week by the spin of a wheel.

The Peays sang "Beautiful Things," from "Doctor Doolittle":

The Lorentzens performed "Out Here On My Own," from "Fame".

After that clash, it was time to once again spin the wheel to determine the genre of music of the songs the Sledge Grits Band and J4 will perform next week. The wheel stopped on -- gospel.

The Early Show's "Singing Family Face Off" competition began last fall, when we asked viewers to send in tapes of their family bands performing original songs. We got a bunch of entries, and narrowed it down to six finalists.

Features reporter and weather anchor Dave Price went around the country, knocking on the doors of the six families who made it into the finals, surprising each one live on national TV!

The first clash of finalists came last Wednesday. Today, the Peays and Lorentzens competed. Next Wednesday, the remaining two finalist families, the Sledge Grits Band and J4.

In each face off, you'll get to vote for your favorite by clicking here.

The three bands who win their face offs will compete against each other for the right to go one-on-one in our grand finale three weeks from now. And the winning family will receive a CBS Records contract.

I cant believe who made it to the finals---in the last competition the Peay family did do a great job
but I could not vote for them with a clear conscience because they deffinately did not out perform the Lorentzens. The Lorentzens out sang them in their competition. To everyone who is griping about the so called "dancing or moving around" while singing evidently hasn't seen any of the old timers(but great). Barbara Streisand, Barry Mannilow, George Straight, Barbara Mandrell, Faith Hill etc... there is not a whole lot of movement going on in their performances, but yet they are still few of the great performers. Its obvious whats going on here. But I have to watch what I say because of sensitive feelings. But as Dupri once said
"I hope america does the right thing here." Lets see how many negative comments I get for saying that!!!!

Congratulations to all six families. What a wonderful thing it is to sing and play music with your family. It has also been a wonderful thing to see that faith is a large part of these famiies' lives. That is a message to America. The families singing together are probably praying together as well.

I have certainly enjoyed wathcing. However, I now have questions.

When is CBS going to put up a Round 3 Front Page? It seems that the last groups have been left behind. When will the 3rd group selection be announced? When will the final three be told what they are to play? There was no indication on the Friday show.

Thanks and continue the great work and have fun.

I would like to take advantage of this forum to personally thank everyone who supported the Lorentzen family! To those of you who offered your encouragement, expressed your enthusiasm and took time to cast votes: we express our appreciation from the bottom of our hearts for your tremendous support. It has been a great experience! We enjoyed meeting the Peay family. Peay mom, Joyce and I had a wonderful conversation in NYC ~ and I wholeheartedly agreed with her when she said to me, "no matter who goes on to the next round, they are all winners!" Even though, we would have loved the chance to go on, we all knew only one family could, but we are so grateful the kids had this great opportunity.
We offer our congratulations to the Peay family. (I don't know if Joyce will read this, but if not, maybe someone who knows her will and can pass the message along: Joyce, you have such a kind spirit, and delightful family. We wish you and your "boys" all the best! and maybe our paths will cross again some day!)
On behalf of the Lorentzen family, we'd like to thank CBS for the opportunity and great experience of coming to NYC to sing on the Early Show. Mark, Anne, Lisa, and Kathryn loved it and feel inspired to continue in their musical careers. Again, a BIG thank you to all who supported us! Look for their MySpace Music page!
With appreciation, "Mom" Lorentzen

To muzikchick86 and everyone else here with negative comments....read this!!!
This competition is about singing... yes we all know that. However, we must understand that this is for a recording contract meaning that the winners will also be PERFORMING, like that had to do the past week. The Peays out PERFORMED the Lorenztens. SIMPLE. If you don't believe me, look at who won. The votes have it. Just because more people have time to write comments about the Lorenztens, doesn't mean the overall majority wanted them to win, as proved true by the outcome. This is not about race, its about talent, and both families had it. The Peays however just had appeal than the Lorenztens, again proven by the vote. J. Dupri did not say anything out of line or racial. That comment clearly could have gone anyway because he didn't say specifically, "vote for the Peay family" and clearly people don't listen to the judges anyway otherwise the Boardwine family would have won round one. All this to say, get over yourselves people. The Peay family won! PERIOD!!!! Congrats to them and much success to the Lorenztens.

Sorry, Bethann72 ~ this competition wasn't about votes at all~ and it wasn't about the best singers either. I agree that hybaybs comments were out of line,...but the first "racist" comment was made by one of the judges - Mr. Dupri "yeah, this is a tough competition, I just hope America does the right thing." The right thing??! I can't believe how many people missed that comment! None of the judges seemed to catch the fact that the Peay family sang horribly out of tune...I guess fancy tuxes and a few choreographed steps fool a lot of people...IF the votes even mattered. MOST of the comments submitted were in support of the Lorentzen family. My suspicion is that this wasn't a REAL competition anyway. The outcome was probably decided before any votes ever came in. After all,...if the Lorentzens had won,..it sure would have made those fake judges look pretty bad. Good luck to the Peays ~ this whole farce wasn't their fault. And, best wishes to the Lorentzen Family. I hope they keep going ~ they have real star appeal, and great talent. I'll be looking for their first CD!

OMG! I can't belive what i just read...... it is so sad that there are still people like that in this world after everything we have been though as people period, how can anyone say something like that it has nothing to do with race or that the president is black it's about the votes,It's really sad that some people are so mad about us having a black president this is the first time is history that this has ever happened up until now we have had a white president and no one was making a big deal then and saying things like this so i guest it was ok when blacks were the minority which to me not much has changed it's just the way some people think and it is so sad to be that way we are all God's childern no matter what color you are he loves us all the same.

hwbaybs,
I'm sorry but you are terribly wrong for being so ignorant, you make me embarrassed and I am a white woman. The group that received the most votes won plain and simple. Had nothing to do with race, had nothing to do with the president (i'm still laughing at that one), or with dancing a "gig" as some other ignorant racist blogger insinuated, had everything to do with who viewers enjoyed the most. You vote for who you like and you carry on with your lives. Others are entitled to like who they like and vote for who they like as well. Why get so hostile? Some people on this board have been so hateful and mean in an effort to support the Lorentzen family and it is not necessary. Let their talent speak for itself, they were great and got amazing exposure. I voted for them just because I know them and I do not feel a need to speak recklessly and irrelevantly. You are making us look like sour losers and racist. If you havent noticed, no one is responding to your ignorance with ignorance to engage you in more ignorant conversation. Lets be civilized adults and display a little more tact.
