Octuplets' Family Facing Foreclosure
Property records show the house where the family of the California octuplets lives is under the threat of foreclosure.
Los Angeles County property records reveal that a notice of mortgage default was recorded Feb. 9 against the Whittier, Calif. home owned by Angela Suleman, the mother of Nadya Suleman, who gave birth to octuplets on Jan. 26.
Nadya Suleman has lived in the home with her six other young children.
The default notice shows Angela Suleman is $23,225 behind in her mortgage payments, and the three-bedroom house could be sold at auction beginning May 5.
Angela Suleman's phone has been disconnected and she could not be immediately reached for comment.
But in an exclusive interview this week with Early Show co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez, Angela Suleman said the family is strapped for money. "My retirement check goes every month. It's just gone. ... Nadya's not working right now. She gets some disability. She was getting disability because she was injured on her job, but that's also gone.
The only breadwinner in the family, Rodriguez points out, is the octuplets' grandfather. Angela Suleman told her she's willing to go back to teaching if need be, but her daughter won't return to work because raising 14 kids is a full-time job in itself.
This isn't the first time the Sulemans have faced foreclosure.
Early Show national correspondent Hattie Kauffman reported recently that they have filed for bankruptcy and abandoned a home a little over a year-and-a-half ago.
Still, Angela Suleman expressed optimism to Rodriguez, saying, "I think love is the main thing here. When they know they're loved, things will work out.
