US Marine Commits Suicide In Canada; Was Wanted By Military For Abandoning Unit
The 24-year-old Marine, whose identity was not released, had a gun on him when police found him in the road outside his mother's home in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Mark Gallagher said.
"Police spoke to him to try to talk him out of using the gun ... and unfortunately the circumstances unfolded and he took his life," Gallagher said.
The Marine had served at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and is thought to have left his unit around Feb. 10, said police Staff Sgt. Mark Furey.
Corporal Melissa McCoy, a spokeswoman at Camp Lejeune, said they were aware of the case, but could not immediately comment.
U.S. police have identified the man as a suspect in a firearm theft in Norfolk, Va., Furey said.
Police were investigating when and how the Marine arrived in Canada and whether he had stolen the gun he used to kill himself from his father's home, Furey said.
