Acquaintance Tells CBS News She Also Has 4 Boys, 2 Girls; 2 Of The Others Are Twins

(CBS)  Doctors say the octuplets born Monday outside Los Angeles are doing well.

But when they go home, it will be to a truly full house.

CBS News has learned the mother who gave birth to the octuplets has six other children.

An acquaintance who didn't want to be identified told Early Show national correspondent Hattie Kauffman the mom has four older boys and two girls.

"She is young," the acquaintance says, "fairly young. She has six children already. And in those six children, she has a set of twins."

While the hospital where the octuplets were born, Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center in Bellflower, Calif., some 17 miles southeast of L.A., hasn't confirmed that the mom used fertility drugs, there are no documented cases of naturally conceived octuplets, Kauffman points out.

Doctors say the babies are all breathing on their own. But all weigh less than four pounds and are expected to remain in the hospital for weeks.

The woman and her children live on a cul-de-sac with her parents.

A man who came to the door of the family home confirmed to Kauffman that he's the grandfather of the octuplets, but refused to speak to her.

"From what you know about this family, and this household, do you think they'll be able to support 14 kids?" Kauffman asked the acquaintance.

"Well," she responded, "so far, they've been fine with the six they have. Fourteen I don't know."

Kauffman says the neighborhood has homes with just two or three bedrooms.

It will, Kauffman concluded, "be tight!"

Doctor's should be held responsible for this kind of acts. They should have some moral and ethical responsibility also. This is nothing but publicity stunt. she want to public attention and that what she is after. Fertility doctors should not have even bother to give treatment to the these mom. But, I guess they are also after money. please don't allow these stupidity before some one else makes this mistake again.

Kids are the responsibility of parents. Don't make a tool to gain fame.

I don''t see a miraculous event or 8 cute babies. I see only irresponsible people including the doctors! Someone with six children should not be on fertility drugs! Who do you suppose will be paying for those kids? The taxpayers, that''s who! These babies are going to rack up a HUGE hospital bill by the time they leave there!! Once the babies leave the hospital, will mom have her hand out? They should have to pay for everything themselves. They made their choice and now have to live with it.

14 *** KIDS??? Do people realize where that money''s going to come from to do surgeries, keep babies alive in intensive care, all the medications, all the highly technical cares will come from??? TAX PAYERS!!!! This woman filed for bankrupcy!!!! She can only afford to live with her mom! The whole medical costs, iIt''s not going to be cheap. Last time I checked, a baby staying in intensive care unit and having multiple surgeries (not to mention alll the specialists doctors that will have to be involved, all the on going auditory, psychological, neurological, physical, orthopedic, gastroenterology) will EACH cost somewhere around $500,000!!!!!!!! That is WRONG!!!! We have a stupid law that forces States to help those in need. Clearly, she DID NOT need those babies. I REFUSE TO PAY FOR STUIPIDITY OF OTHERS JUST BECAUSE OF THEIR WEIRD PSYCHOLOGICAL NEED TO HAVE CHILDREN. This woman needs to be sued, locked up, and the kids taken away out of irresponsibility! She needs to be court ordered to pay for this irresponsibility for the rest of her life by taking away part of her wages. There needs to be laws limiting this kind of stupidity so WE, THE TAX PAYERS, don''t end up with the bill!!! China has 2 kids rule. Look what kind of great economic boom you can have with that! Listen people, if you want babies and can''t get pregnant, DON''T MAKE taxpayers pay for it! Just go out and adopt!

Harbinger - I''m definitely in your choir, but precedent has been set & incentives are forthcoming (unfortunately its our government who will be %u201Crewarding%u201D her stupidity). The point I was trying to make was %u2013 we (the taxpayers) are stuck on the hook for all of the following:

Housing - (only a slight bit smaller than Bill Gates%u2019pad)
Heat, food, lights & transportation (in consumption numbers sure to make Al Gore soil himself).
Child Care (it literally WILL take a village to raise this clan)
Health Care (that just got rubber stamped the other day)
And (the icing on the proverbial cake) now she%u2019s gearing up for a visit to the local head-shrinker because she has got and %u201Cobsession%u201D with procreation. Translation: %u201Ctoo crazy to work when these kids finally leave the nest%u201D.

She%u2019s a self-described %u201Cprofessional student%u201D %u2013 so anyone out their who wants to tell me she is paying out of pocket for her tuition AND this fertility treatment%u2026 please contact me about a bridge in Brooklyn I need to sell cheap!
