Fountain Of Youth In A Wine Rx?

Researchers Tell Morley Safer Red Wine Substance Resveratrol Could One Day Lengthen Lives

  • Play CBS Video Video Wine Rx

Scientists have found a substance called resveratrol in red wine that slows down the aging process in mice. Will it someday lengthen the lives of humans, too? Morley Safer reports.

  • Video The French Paradox

Morley Safer found, in 1991, that the French may have lower rates of heart attacks because their diet is high in cheese and wine.

  • Video To Your Health

Additional research has shown that drinking wine does indeed reduce the risk for heart attacks, as Morley Safer reported in 1995.

(CBS) Dr. Richard Weindruch, who heads up the study, believes that calorie restriction turns on these monkeys' genetic survival switch. A hungry life seems to lead to a longer life.

"There is an emerging survival advantage for the monkeys on caloric restriction and 50 percent of the normally-fed animals have died. And maybe 25 percent of those on caloric restriction," Dr. Weindruch explains.

"That's a pretty remarkable number. Surely those are strong indications that restricted calorie intake among humans would be extremely beneficial," Safer remarks.

"It appears to support that idea," Weindruch agrees.

But our record as humans staying on diets is pretty miserable and worsening. So it's a fat chance that we'll all be giving up our passion for greasy junk. We consume tons more calories than we need but, believe it or not, there are some Americans who just revel in their hunger.

Meet the members of CRS - the Calorie Restriction Society - a group that has been severely restricting their calories for years now. They are also part of a Washington University study to see if humans "mimic" the monkeys. Does this kind of self-denial makes them live longer, healthier lives?

60 Minutes joined them for what they call "happy hour," consisting of a cocktail of low-calorie soup for starters, and walnuts, and baby food - green bean puree on flour-free bread to top off this feast fit for a flea.

So far the participants have lowered their blood pressure, reduced body fat, and lessened risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and even cancer. And what's more, to one husband anyway, starvation has its sexy side. "To be honest, if you saw her without any clothes, you'd see she looks pretty darn good, like a woman like of many, many years younger," the man told 60 Minutes.

Their emissaries travel the world, spreading the faith and the word: hunger turns on the survival gene.

The skinnies may not die young, but given their diet they just might die of boredom. But if the scientists at Sirtris are on the right track, it could mean forget dieting, forget the sweaty business of working out - just pop a pill and you are in guilt-free couch potato paradise.

Resveratrol - Resveratrol is a polyphenol, a natural antioxidant
that protects cells against dangerous, naturally occurring substances known as free radicals. It decreases the `stickiness? of blood platelets and helps blood vessels remain open and flexible. Since it is not an essential nutrient, Resveratrol is not associated with a deficiency state. Buy Resveratrol Supplements on Discount at HerbsMD

Resveratrol is truly a miracle ingredient, and we have only scratched the surface as to its realistic application. In every species studied so far (molds, yeast, rats) resveratrol has increased overall lifespan (approximately 60%). Now while it's possible that a high enough dosage might do that in humans, I think 99% of people would be happy with an extra 5 - 10 years. Imagine if resveratrol also helped those years, and the years proceeding those to be better, free from illness and pain. Hopefully science can unlock the secrets of resveratrol to benefit all of mankind. Be careful of resveratrol scams. They are everywhere, and should be avoided at all costs. If you are interested in resveratrol, and/or REAL resveratrol products, then try a legitimate product like RevGenetics 300, RezBerry Plus, Longevinex, or NOW Resveratrol... all reputable products from reputable companies. You can also check out some good resource sites and/or review sites like reviewresveratrol.com.

Do you know of a site other than www.revitalmin.com that explains resveratrol better scientifically for oral obsorptions?? I heard that oral absorption is the most effective way. This site seems pretty informative

You opened a flood gate to un-scrupulous pill peddlers after your segment on Resveratrol. Now it's time to expose the crooks you turned loose!

Dr Oz was recently on the Good Morning America show talking about the the Resveratrol Research. You can watch the show by going to You Tube and typing in "Dr Oz Resveratrol" and it should be the first one that pops up, and it currently has over 41,000+ views. He tends to think you should take a Resveratrol supplement that has more than 150 mg of trans-resveratrol.

I was alos incredibly disappointed that 60 Minutes would have anything to do with such a scam. The Free trial at no risk is all risk. Once you get the product they don't give you any information on how to cancel the product or where to return the product to. It is a devious scam that just trys to keep getting money from the credit card that you paid for the postage. SHAME ON 60 MINUTES for not researching the comapny who is just out to scam people. What's Next! A show on money available in Nigeria!

Hello,
My name is Clinton. I watch your segment on Resveratrol. I found it very interesting, and I thought you might also be interested in a little yellow pill called Protandim. It has the effects of Resveratrol times a million and is all natural. It has been studied, and proven, to slow down aging by reducing oxidative stress levels in the body to the levels of a child. John Quinones from ABC Primetime was a part of the study done in 2005. The study is published in peer reviewed medical journals.
Oxidative stress is linked to over 229 diseases, so reducing oxidative stress also reduces the effects of these diseases. LSU released a study in April that showed Protandim prevents the growth of skin cancer, and there are currently 20 other universities engaged in independent studies of the effects of Protandim on different diseases, like diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, coronary artery disease, and many more. Protandim increases your body's natural antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, glutathione), and these enzymes are millions of times more effective at fighting free radicals than external antioxidants.
Dr. Joe McCord, the scientist who developed Protandim, is the same doctor who discovered SOD's in 1968. He has spent his life developing a pill that will unlock the key to slow down the aging process, and he has done it! Montel Williams has been taking Protandim for 3 years to help with his multiple sclerosis. Dr. Perlmutter has joined the scientific advisory board of LifeVantage, the company that makes Protandim. I have attached the ABC Primetime Special about Protandim. I think you will find it very interesting.

I can see next weeks special, 60 minutes customers scammed hard by Resveratol peddlers.
Lets see, they charged $86 for the stuff only after a few days, fyi did the same thing to my father in law who was watching the show. ON top of that they charged my card for $49.95 for some skin creme.... Skin Creme I haven't even heard of btw. I never authorized any of the charges, they were jerking me around so I had to call my bank and report it as fraud. I hope in the future you provide a reputable website to order it from in your story rather than just sending us out to the wolves. Thanks 60 Minutes, I recommend Resveratrol to anyone that wants their credit card drained.

Yea, the old saying a sucker is born every sixty seconds and that was me. Thanks 60 minutes for supporting the 15 day free trial that was only 4 days when I was charged. I too would support a show on free trial scams!

I would like to see you do an expose' of the business practices of this company, especialy since they use your report segment for marketing practices, they offer a "free" bottle+S&H, Then charge your account full price ($87.13) within 15 days for the "free" sample ! I guess it should come as no surprise that integrity is a thing off the past.

I am curious as to why 60 minutes talked a lot about the pharma companies and their research and possible distribution of Resveratrol in a pill form, but failed to mention any of the multitudes of supplements that already include high potency forms of resveratrol in supplements or nutritional drinks. I'm wondering if there is anyone that has independent information on these types of products???

I watched your piece on the Resveratrol. First of all I was appalled by the cruel treatment of these poor monkeys, is it really necessary to subject these innocent animals to 20 years of living in a cage?
Secondly you should also run a disclaimer to all those internet companies that try to sell resveratrol, because people, like myself unfortunately, will believe that since it was reported on 60 Minutes these companies must be legitimate. Well they are anything but, from strong arm sales techniques, to rude telemarketers to unauthorized charges on credit card bank accounts, this is not acceptable. How about doing a piece on these shady companies to prevent all of us gullible people from falling prey to them?

I watched this segment and was deeply saddened and upset about the immoral use of rhesus monkeys who were kept caged, in sterile conditions for decades (amounting to almost their entire lives), and hungry (the experimental group), in order to study reduced calorie consumption and longevity. These animals are social, sentient creatures. What does it matter that the experimental group appeared healthier and lived longer than the control group? All of them were deprived of their lives in a cruel, callous manner in order to advance science regarding longevity. A longer life is not necessarily a better life, as the situation of these poor monkeys domonstrates. Rather than more of these unnecessary studies (i.e., Why not study the human group that voluntarily reduces their calorie consumption?), what is needed is an understanding of what can increase human sensitivity, empathy, and compassion, which are ever so more important than just extending our years. Experiments such as these, and the casual reporting of them, as if they are acceptable and justified, demonstrates that this understanding is greatly needed. Experimenting with animals (including mice) is cruel and unacceptable,

There is a scam like situation with this report. A trial supply is advertised, then another company has piggybacked on the original offer. You are unable to contact the company to cancel the product.

Keeping those monkeys in thoses cages for their entire lives is immoral... disecting those mice should be criminal... How intelligent does an animal have to be before it's considered murder?

Did anyone notice how many times the makers of the new resveratrol pill mentioned that it was for "diseases of aging", like becoming more diseased as we get older is a fact of life. It is not a fact of life. The human body is not designed to naturally become diseased. Most of the diseases afflicting people today are due to our "modern" lifestyle of being more sedentary, eating processed foods, eating too much, living in a polluted environment and being too stressed. Right now two-thirds of all men, women and children in the U.S. take prescription drugs and yet Americans live shorter lives than the citizens of forty other countries that spend far less on medicines and other medical care (see "Our Daily Meds" by Melody Petersen). Why doesn't 60 Minutes report on the reasons behind this instead of promoting more pills? There's been a huge increase in auto-immune diseases in this country linked to the environmental contaminants we encounter on a daily basis in our homes, schools and workplaces (see "The Autoimmune Epidemic" by Donna Jackson Nakazawa). That's another big story that the mainstream media is missing. And here's one more: on May 19, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (www.aaemonline.org) called for an immediate moratorium on genetically modified foods saying that they cause a serious health risk. Citing several animal studies, the AAEM concludes "there is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects" and that "GM foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy and immune function, reproductive health, and metabolic, physiologic and genetic health." GMO's have been approved by the FDA since 1996. Last year 89% of all soy planted in the U.S. was GM. Why is no one reporting this story??? (A good source of information is www.responsibletechnology.org). I find it troubling that we spent so much airtime last year on tainted peanuts that might be in a child's peanut butter, yet never heard a word about the corn sweetener in almost every child's peanut butter that most likely came from GM corn. What long term health damage will all of these children suffer? We must start talking about health in this country, not just healthcare. That could be one of the answers to our out-of-control spending. Another would be to consider the new biology that has moved beyond Newton and looks at things on a quantum level (for a start, see "The Biology of Belief" by Dr. Bruce Lipton, www.brucelipton.com).
