Jobs said he will undergo a "relatively simple" treatment and will remain as head of Apple until he recovers.
"A hormone imbalance ... has been 'robbing' me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy," Jobs said in a public letter, adding, "Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis."
Rumors about his health have intensified since Cupertino, California-based Apple said in December that Jobs would not be making his annual keynote address this week in San Francisco at the Macworld conference. Apple said this year's conference will be its last, with Phil Schiller, an Apple marketing executive, giving the company's presentation.
Adding to the speculation, Jobs, who survived pancreatic cancer, has appeared increasingly gaunt at public appearances.
In his statement Monday, Jobs said, "The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I've already begun treatment."
He added, "Just like I didn't lose this much weight and body mass in a week or a month, my doctors expect it will take me until late this Spring to regain it."
The company's board released a statement separately, saying, "Apple is very lucky to have Steve as its leader and CEO, and he deserves our complete and unwavering support during his recuperation. He most certainly has that from Apple and its Board."

See all 21 Comments- and to commemorate the occasion let''s get are armpits waxed ... for special effects... *v*
He has consistently designed and provided the best computers, and other gadgets, imaginable.
All the people whining about "oh, Apple products cost more" can just go buy themselves a common POS.
(The notable exception is, of course, Linux).
Apple CEO Steve Jobs reeks of Aids...in fact he is Aids positive so maybe if he gets breast implants shaves his armpits, shaves his legs puts on pink lip gloss the hormonal imbalance thing would be more believable. duh....
Women have menstral cycles not men hello
Women have imbalance hormones proven fact hello
This is RETARDED like listening to the gig they do in Philippines pregnant men yeah that works before and after PO-210 keep it real...
He''s BI-SEXUAL already, get over it.
"A hormone imbalance ... has been ''robbing'' me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy,"
If this is a result of the estrogen-mimicking compounds that his company poisons the world with, then it serves him right.
What a greedy, clueless dope.
It''s obvious that Apple is releasing this type of news to calm down the investors, but does anyone really think it''s just that simple (a hormone imbalance) - NO!
I tend to think that it would''ve been discoved a very long time ago given his condition which probably warrants regular visits to the doctors and continual testing...hello!
If Apple cannot move on without Steven Jobs then it''s their problem, better to face it sooner than later.
As for his personal like/health/etc. - are we all that immature that we need some invasive "fix" of information or else a product line is doomed? While Jobs has returned Apple to original goal of high-end design as well as function - he has had plenty of help. And the latest fixation on laptops and phones have left some users less than happy at Apple''s current line-up.
