UN Envoy: Nations Must Take Guantanamo Inmates

UN Torture Investigator Urges More Countries To Take In Guantanamo Prisoners

(AP)  The U.N.'s torture investigator is urging more countries to take in Guantanamo prisoners once the U.S.-run prison in eastern Cuba closes.

Manfred Nowak told Austrian radio more nations need to show "solidarity" with the incoming government of President-elect Barack Obama, who has vowed to shut Guantanamo once he takes office.

Nowak says most of the roughly 200 inmates still held there were arrested simply because they were "in the wrong place at the wrong time." He says the overwhelming majority had nothing to do with the Sept. 11 attacks.

Nowak urged European countries Monday to consider the prisoners refugees and take them in. Austria is among many EU nations that have ruled out accepting Guantanamo inmates.
