Palestinian militants launch rocket attacks, Israel hits back hard.

(CBS/ AP)  Hard-line Iranian student groups have appealed to the government to authorize volunteer suicide bombers to leave Iran and fight against Israel in response to the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip.

The government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had not responded to the call by Wednesday. Five hard-line student groups and a conservative clerical group launched a registration drive on Monday, seeking volunteers to carry out suicide attacks against Israel.

"Volunteer student suicide groups ... are determined to go to Gaza. You are expected to issue orders to the relevant authorities in order to pave the way for such action," the students advised Ahmadinejad in an open letter, a copy of which was made available to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Volunteer suicide groups have made similar moves in the past and the government never responded to their calls. However, some hard-liners have claimed they successfully but secretly left Iran and carried out attacks against Israel. Their claims could not be verified.

The hard-liners started signing up volunteers after Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a religious decree on Sunday that said anyone killed while defending Palestinians in Gaza against Israeli attacks would be considered a martyr.

In a speech Tuesday, Ahmadinejad called for the trial of Israeli leaders on charges of massacring Palestinians in Gaza. His comments come a day after Iran's judiciary set up a court to try Israeli leaders for such "crimes."

Later that night, Iranian students stormed part of the British Embassy compound in north Tehran and occupied it for a short time, reported CBS News producer Leily Lankarani.

None of the embassy personnel were injured in the siege but windows were broken and a car was damaged. The part of the British Embassy stormed by the students is used as a residence and also the British Council in Tehran.

Iran considers Israel its archenemy and Ahmadinejad has repeatedly called for Israel to be "wiped off the map." Iran also is Hamas' main backer, though Tehran denies sending weapons to the Islamic militant Palestinian group that took control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007.

Israel's airstrikes on Gaza have sparked outrage in Iran and throughout the rest of the Muslim world. Four days of Israeli air strikes have killed 374 Palestinians and prompted Arab and international condemnation and a global diplomatic push to end the fighting. Israel says it launched its campaign in retaliation for rocket fire aimed at civilians in southern Israeli towns.

Iranian student leaders claim that more than 10,000 people throughout Iran have registered for volunteer suicide attacks in the past three days.

At a gathering Tuesday in Tehran to support Gazans and condemn Israeli attacks, hard-liners were distributing registration forms to volunteers.

Volunteer Ali Reza Takrim Namini said a "sense of religious obligation" made him register for suicide attacks against Israel.

"How can I remain indifferent while defenseless Palestinians are being butchered," he said as he filled out his form.

"I'm willing to sacrifice my blood in support of Islam and in defense of Palestinian Muslims," said another volunteer, Mostafa Babaei.

The volunteers wore white shrouds symbolizing their willingness to die and headbands with the slogan "Defenders of Gaza" and "Ready for Martyrdom." Most of those registering were members of the Basij militia, a hard-line paramilitary group.

Also in Tehran, hard-line students regularly rally in front of Egypt's interest section office to condemn Cairo's refusal to reopen the Rafah border crossing with Gaza for humanitarian supplies.

They have warned they will storm the mission by Thursday if Egypt doesn't condemn the Israeli attacks keeps the border crossing closed.

Protesters are also holding daily gatherings in front of Jordanian and Saudi embassies to denounce Arab silence over the Gaza bombing, and in front of the U.N. building in Tehran to condemn U.N. inaction.

Students have also called on Muslims to boycott products from companies connected to Israel.

The state-owned newspaper, Iran, said in a report Wednesday that a branch of Italian clothing retailer Benetton was set on fire in north Tehran on Tuesday evening. It didn't provide details but said the shop was "affiliated to the Zionist network."

The Iranian Red Crescent has sent a ship carrying 2,000 tons of food to Palestinians living in Gaza to be delivered through Egypt and an Iranian military plane landed in Cairo Monday with 24 tons of food and medicines for Gaza.

The head of Iran's Red Crescent, Masoud Khatami, said three more ships were waiting to be loaded with humanitarian aid, and Iranian hospitals were ready to receive injured Gazans, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Exactly WHAT does Iran think it will do with this? In a situation of Combat, the troops are going to shoot anyone who isn''t one of them. These stupid religious nuts are the same the world over and, although the brand may change, the results are always the same. MORE poor uneducated people are going to die! It''s not a matter of IF these folks are going to live together but is a matter of when they will have seen enough blood flowing, to get along.

This story sounds like typical right wing terrorist propaganda. The kind that supports fascist governments like those of Israel and the US. I know Republicans are stupid enough to buy this junk from the main stained press but really. I think the jig is up now for Israel and their terrorist friend the US.

These are more likely ignorant people from the provinces that have been so brainwashed by religion that they will do anything to appease some stupid ayatollah nutcase. What these "students" need is for someone to tell them that suicide bombers don''t go to heaven. They just die and they don''t solve one problem in the process, except to free their families of the burden of feeding them.

The prime purpose of Israel and the US governments appears to be stealing others land and oil. And killing those that stand in their way. Even if they are innocent women and children. And who are the violent extremist terrorists? Actions speak louder than words!

sidekick LOL! Onthe one hand you declare "Israel must be wiped off the map" (not very peaceful) and in the same breath state the world would then be peaceful! What a brainwashed moron you must be. You and your terrorist Muslim brothers will never allow a peaceful planet as long as their are non-believers. A peaceful world could actually happen if the insane radicals like yourself were "wiped out". Israel and the greater world would live in peace if allowed, it''s that simple.

sidekick, LOL! Israel exists on tiny strip of line comprising less than 1 % of the total area under Arab jurisdiction. THe plight of the Palestinians ois a strategy used by the greater Arab world to justify their hatred for the Isrealis. The Arab world, the oil richest on the planet could lift the Palestinians out of destitution but chose not too in order to keep the hatred fueled. The lame excuses you terorist make in order ot justify your hatred and barbarism is utter nonsense, and not justifiable. Answer this, why don''t the surrounding Arab brothers help the Palestinians? Would it mean peace as the end result? You savages wouldn''t want that of course.

"It seems to me that all religion is bad it doesn''''t make a difference which one you choose they are all bent on destruction. "

Well, when you consider WWI, WWI, Colonial Wars, Roman Conquests, Alexander the Great, Stallinist Russia, etc... I''d say the secularly motivated destruction wins pretty well hand over foot compared to Islamic Terror, the Crusades, & other comparatively minor skirmishes... and don''t go trying to say all the aforementioned were REALLY religious based because anybody with half a brain knows religion was an afterthought at best compared to the fundamental desire for power, money, land, etc...

But let''s be honest here... this cult of death known as Islam is the real problem along with Arab culture - clearly the scourge of the earth.

I never heard one word of condemation of hamas when they broke the cease fire and started shelling s. Israel with their rockets from the Arab world. I also never hear a word of condemation from the islamic world against the fundamentalists who are indeed a cult of death aimed towards the western world. I think we should totally withdraw from the arab world, economically, socially, and politically. But defend Israel with our military technology and any means we need to. While I''m wishing, I wish for electric cars to replace the autos driven by the oil powered internal combustion engine.

Iran has the potential to become an important nation with empowered, highly sophisticated people. The path they have chosen, however, is almost comical. With extremely un-refined and unintelligent (yes, very, very unintelligent) leadership who toss their hollow weight around like bully''s, makes it soooooooo difficult to believe in them. This is gravely unfortunate. Ultimately, it appears that they will either have another revolution and cooperate with their potential, or create conditions where the world will no longer tolerate their lack of respect and absurd departures from reality...and beat them into ''submission''. The choices here have become very limited. Everyone is running out of patience with these people. It''s one thing to voice your opinion (as the French do, thank heavens), its another to take away from the global society on a continuous basis. The oil is running out baby...what will you offer the world when it does? Collectivity and civility rise above everything: the very intention of the Divine Architect. Cooperate or face the consequences. I hope you will choose the former.

Would Iranian suicide bombers not justify the use of Israeli Nukes against Iran? I don''t think the Israelis would pass on such a golden opportunity to justify the complete destruction of a self declared enemy. Anyways Let them go to war. As long as it stays over there and its mildly entertaining. I don''t care.

The Iranians have a little bit of a problem. They have a great deal to lose and they know it.

Not a problem the Palestinians have.

In addition, there''s an awful lot of people out there in the larger world who would just love an excuse to take down Iran. They know that, too.

Religion is often a shield behind which power hungry, greedy and evil people hide. All extremists, whether Jewish or Muslim, are the big problem.
BTW, I have and continue to travel extensively. It is probably pretty obvious that I am American, yet I have never treated badly by anyone...so much for the "Americans are hated everywhere" ***. In fact, I would say the opposite is true. Everyone wants to speak English and wear US made bluejeans.

We are being infiltrated by people who hate us as evidenced by some of the people who are posting here. In America having a different opinion from the political party in charge is accepted but calling for the death of your countrymen shouldn''t be. Try doing that in Iran or any other Muslim country! Talk to an Iranian who has fled their country to come here. Iran is controlled by their religion. The political president is a puppet for the fanatical religious leadership. Most educated intelligent Iranians have fled the country and fear for the people they left behind.

I agree with the poster who said Palistine is being used as a pawn in the war of Israel vs Islam. They want to keep the conflict smoldering and growing as it gives the uneducated and poor masses something to be upset about rather than their own plight at the hands of their own leaders. They want them to become suicide bomber against Israel rather than overthrowing their own leaders who want to put Iran back into the dark ages.

Islam recognizes Adam, Moses, and other significant figures of the Christian and Jewish religions. Some of the basic script from the Quran are almost identical to the scriptures in the Holy Bible. It is possible that these are just different spins on the same religion. Similar to Catholicism and Baptist. Perhaps instead of trying to destroy each other, they should try to find the common goals within each others religions and work from there.

It just seems to me the easiest way to resolve a conflict is to find a middle ground and work your way out from there. They have the middle ground working out a resolution would be a reasonable approach.
