Second Cup Cafe: Sonya Kitchell

(CBS)  Singer, songwriter and guitarist Sonya Kitchell has a gift for expressing and evoking emotions. At the age of 16, she embraced her talent and shared it with the rest of the world.

And Grammy-winning jazz musician Herbie Hancock was all ears.

Kitchell stopped by The Early Show Saturday Edition's "Second Cup Cafe" to perform songs from her latest album, "This Storm."

The buzz around Kitchell started when her sound resonated with Hancock, an impressive jazz musician in a class of his own. He asked Kitchell to join his band at the Sonoma Jazz Festival in 2006.

From that point on, their musical collaboration was a match made in harmonious heaven.

Kitchell joined Hancock and his band as he toured the West Coast in 2007 in support of his Grammy-Award winning album, "River: The Joni Letters."

After returning from that tour, Kitchell let her new songs sit and marinate for awhile, then headed back to the studio to create "This Storm."

There are 12 tracks on "This Storm," which was recorded with Grammy-winning producer Malcolm Burn (Daniel Lanois, Peter Gabriel and Emmylou Harris).

Kitchell's debut album, "Words Came Back To Me," was released in 2006, when she was only 16. It was a huge success and received a lot of praise.

"I want people to feel excited when they hear the album," Kitchell said on her official Web site. "That ecstatic, elated feeling you get when something is so good that it makes you want to listen to it over and over again.

"I hope to create music that has as much of an effect on others as artists like Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, Janis Joplin, and Leonard Cohen had on me. I know that's setting the bar very, very high but that's my goal."
