Rick Warren Insists He's Not Anti-Gay

Pastor Rick Warren, chosen by President-elect Barack Obama to pray at his inauguration, said in a video message to his church that he doesn't equate gay relationships with incest or pedophilia, but opposes redefining marriage just as any conservative Christian would.

Warren said that disagreeing with gay-rights activists on same-sex marriage does not qualify as hate speech and doesn't mean he is anti-gay. He said Mr. Obama chose him to give the invocation at the swearing-in to show that people with different views don't have to demonize each other.

"We're both willing to be criticized in order to try to bring America into a new day of civil discourse and to create a new model that says you don't have to agree only with your side on everything," Warren said in the video posted Monday night by Saddleback Community Church.

Gay-rights advocates were enraged that Mr. Obama had given the evangelical clergyman a prominent role at the Jan. 20 inauguration. Mr. Obama said he wanted the event to reflect diverse views and insisted he remains a "fierce advocate" of equal rights for gays.

Warren had backed Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in his home state of California, where he founded Saddleback. He had recently said that he opposed any redefinition of marriage, including a brother marrying a sister, or an adult marrying a child.

In his video, he insisted he wasn't equating gay marriage with incest or child molestation.

"I have in no way ever taught that homosexuality is the same thing as a forced relationship between an adult and a child, or between siblings," Warren said. "I was trying to point out I'm not opposed to gays having their partnership. I'm opposed to gays using the term marriage for their relationship."

Perhaps hoping to improve his image, Warren paid an unannounced visit to a West Hollywood store that supports gay causes on Monday.

Erol Sarabi, the openly gay manager of the thrift store "Out Of The Closet," and Warren had their picture taken and chatted, reports CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker.

Sarabi said Warren "kind of just wanted to let me know that his church had given a lot of money to people with AIDS and not to believe everything that I had read."

Howard Bragman, a gay activist and celebrity publicist, called Warren's West Hollywood shopping trip a publicity stunt.

"Am I suspicious?" Bragman said. "He just happens to show up at a thrift store in West Hollywood that benefits the HIVE and gay and lesbian community?"

On Tuesday, Warren's church replaced a brief article on the Bible and homosexuality with an audio message on Saddlebackfamily.com to better explain the church's view that Scripture prohibits sex outside of marriage between a man and a woman, according to Larry Ross, a Warren spokesman.

Anyone can attend Saddleback worship services. But the church article had said that gays "unwilling to repent of their homosexual lifestyle would not be accepted" as members.

Saddleback members must sign a broadly worded covenant in which they agree to follow Bible teachings. While gay relationships aren't mentioned in the pledge, it is meant to cover the spectrum of conservative Christian belief.

One of the problems America faces is learning to have discourse and discussion. If the Rev. Warren believes that *** should be given civil arrangements to share property; etc., that''s fine. That''s exactly how I feel also and many people do. But ... when being in disagreement with a group or a position is defined as "enragiing" and words are twisted and intentional lies are used to advance a position ... that''s not discourse and discussion.

I own "Purpose Driven Life" book and journal. I now see that Rick Warren seems to have targeted gay people lately. That''s all he seems to talk about, or maybe that''s all that''s being covered. I wonder why. There are other sins in the bible. I think thou dost protest too much. Obama always said he was against gay marriage, but not civil unions or equal rights. I don''t have a problem with his actions on this issue.

So your messiah Nobama now thumbs his nose at the gay community and does as he pleases. Bawhahahaha. This is just the start of a long list of groups that supported that empty suit and are about to be stabbed in the back.

Actually most of us supported Obama for the very reason that he is capable of thinking for himself.
If we wanted a bunch of elephants that link their trunks to the leaders tail so they can keep their circus going round and round we would have voted RepubliCON.

This as usual represents the intolerance of conservatives and christians activists who expect people to accept thier views and any differences makes them anti-christian.

Jesus hates the sin, not the sinner. He said (1st), Make a decision to try not to sin anymore and (2nd)turn your life over to me and (3rd) I will help you become a new man. He never said (become christian then you can continue to sin). He already knows that man will sin and expects us to fight it and seek his help in fighting it. No more, no less, reguardless of what "feel good" preachers try to tell you.

"These from a christian point of view the proper actions. If you want him (Rick Warren) to condone homosexuality as appropriate behavior he will have to disavow his faith and leave his church.

This as usual represents the intolerance of liberals and gay activists who expect people to accept their views and any differences makes the anti-gay."

The question isnt whether or not Rick Warren hates *** or not, its whether he believes that certain Americans shouldnt enjoy the same rights as the rest of us. No one is asking Mr Warren to accept or embrace a homosexual lifestyle. Only to recognize that every human being has an inherit right to live their lives as they chose, that inherit right isnt exclusively for those that are followers of Mr. Warrens faith....

You could have fooled me but he is a christian and according to the bible he preaches from homosexual behavior is a sin and a rejection of God''s law. He is also as all Christians told to love the sinner me and you but hate the sin adultery homosexualtiy, greed selfishness.

so yes as far as I have heard he has done much to help *** who have aids and he has done what he can to get homosexuals to live the life promulgated in the bible.

These from a christian point of view the proper actions. If you want him to condone homosexuality as appropriate behavior he will have to disavow his faith and leave his church.

the headline reminds of the typical question as to when you stopped beating your wife. There is no answer.

WOW so Pastor RW is not antigay. Cudda fooled me. He preaches that queer folks are really terribly mixed up straight folks. He offers them religion based fake therapy to either make them sexless or turn them straight. He completely ignores children being raised by queer folks in his ministry/preaching. He waffles about whether/to what extent he would cut back queer folks options in housing or work or family life or parenting. He did strongly support P8 to ban gay marriage, but partner laws are still on the books (for how long?). He stops short for now of demanding Muslim-style flogging or death penalties. Gee, with friends like this who are not antigay, it is hard to tell them from the truly antigay religious believers.
