Andy Rooney (CBS)
I get a lot of letters. I like that. I don’t answer many of them, but I like that. I like most of them anyway. I get a lot of letters from people who are mad at me.
Gabriela Quintana says she was "honestly offended" when I said I wouldn't pay $1.50 for a cup of coffee in the CBS cafeteria. She didn't believe me.
"Do you fill up your tank or does your driver?" she wants to know.
I'll tell you what Gabriela, if you find I have a driver I'll buy you a thousand dollars worth of gas. The day I have to have a driver I'll quit driving. I'll just get in and say "Take me to Gabriela's house."
Lisa Glenn writes me a nice letter. I like the nice ones best. Lisa says I looked good last week because my eyebrows were trimmed.
Well, I hate to disillusion you Lisa after you were so nice to me, but I have never fooled around with my eyebrows. Susie fools around with my hair sometimes. Maybe that's what did it. To get ready to tape this piece for television, I comb my hair. But, if I do anything more, I look like someone else.
Lori Yates says I ought to quit. "I regret," she says about last week's remarks "that Mr. Rooney once again brought a message that was sadly and negatively off the mark."
"Sadly and negatively". Wow. I must have really missed the mark. I've thought of quitting but I decided against it. I was wondering what Lori does for a living. Maybe I could get her job.
Ginny Hardy writes a mostly nice letter complaining about my remarks about The Salvation Army. I admit I don't know much about The Salvation Army. It's a dumb name but I guess they do good work.
Steven Wishnoff says "I have nothing but the utmost respect for Mr. Rooney." You have to be careful with letters that start like that. Mr. Wishnoff continues "Mr. Rooney should measure his words more carefully."
He goes on to say that no matter what I think, real work is very hard to find. And I think he's probably right considering all the letters I got saying that. Maybe I didn't know what I was talking about. That's what I do for a living.

- I look forward to Sunday evenings, because there is 60 Minutes. Although the show has always been excellent, Andy Rooney puts the cherry on the sundae. I appreciate every segment, and he speaks without worry about how he is received. He is real! There are not many like Andy Rooney anymore, and I am glad you remain on the program, and miss you when you are not.

- Dear Andy,
We were moved tonight (june 21st) to send you a note to tell you that we are great fans of your weekly discourse. We have a hard time believeing that some people have a problem with your comments.
You may not always please everyone, but we always tune in and, by the way, we love your eyebrows!!
Keep doing what you do PLEASE!!!!

- Go get em Andy. I don't always agree with you but think your ability to speak your own mind is a miracle in this day and age; when they are even trying to force folks to wear underwear by congressional order. Dumb idea, agree or not! My whole family has been military for centuries and that is why we have the freedom we have today from the Spanish American War to Dessert Storm. Dad spent 33 year in the Army-Air Force. I love you, fellow. Keep em coming.
Just another old person speaking out. Many hugs!!! - Reply to this comment
- Dear Mr. Rooney, My father was in Patton's Army in the 94th Infantry Division. They liberated concentration camps yet remain unrecognized for their efforts. I have been pursuing their recognition, along with the help of Sen. Kennedy's office for some time now. Unfortunately we have hit a wall and am seeking any possible assistance to rectify this wrong. A friend wrote an article about my father, the 94th and our efforts to obtain Liberator status, so am posting the address as she explains it all so well. http://jdurward.blogspot.com/
My parents admire you and your work greatly and never miss a show. I know they would be thrilled if you were to play a role in resolving this matter, and I forever grateful. Thank you for your consideration, Kathleen Cowley - Reply to this comment
- Andy,
I can't find a link for sending you email so, I will leave my question/comment here with the hopes that you or one of your fine Staff Members will come upon it.
Did you ever wonder why, in this age of political correctness, TV Commercials seem comfortable about focusing ridicule on one specific demographic group? It seems that 90% of commercials feature a ?White Guy? as the stooge and dupe who is shown as inferior to his wife, his kids and every minority.
I?m assuming that this is because the average ?White Guy? is far too intelligent to be manipulated by the Advertisers hence, they become fair game. Moreover, ?White Guys? are typically the demographic group that blocks the foolish spending of those other demographic groups, that are ?TOO EASILY SEPARATED FROM THEIR MONEY.? - Reply to this comment

- This to Andy Rooney, I watched your segment last Sunday on 60 Minutes and as usual I am disappointed in 60 Minutes as only a portion of the facts are presented. You need to do the same. Specically on the presidents. You noted the array of presidents but did not explain to the audiance that the critera was on leadership only. You did not explain what the leadership critera was, could be many. In addtion, you did not mention that there are many many critera for evaluating a president. You misled the folks. You need to address your comments in include all the facts. This is the reason I have stopped watching 60 Minutes years ago, only the facts you want to present, not the truth.

- Doing away with Andy Rooney ? Absolutely unthinkable.
A better idea: expand his segment and comments to fill 50 minutes. Five minutes weekly with Mr. Rooney
only teases my appetite. I may miss most of the broadcast material some weeks but NEVER Andy.
Sundays with Andy... better than Tuesdays with Maury. - Reply to this comment
- Not a comment but a request. Andy, a number of years ago you wrote an article in the newspaper about the decline of neighborhoods. What neighborhoods used to be like where you knew your neighbors, etc. Please tell me how i can get a copy of the article. Can it be e-mailed ? I am quite in volved with neighborhood watch activity.

- Wow, I can''t believe that people like Truth_Police and Rank_n_File are still quoting that bogus e-mail that has Andy''s name attributed to it. Everybody with half a brain knows that it is false. For the people that don''t here is the link to where Andy denounces that e-mail. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/10/20/60minutes/rooney/main958151.shtml Truth_Police should arrest himself for spreading stupid lies.

- My husband (a retired journalist) and I have long enjoyed "60 Minutes." We beg you: please retire Andy Rooney! His segments are an embarrassment and a waste of valuable media time. How much longer can you inflict Rooney''s "a pile of junk on my desk" commentary on viewers. Enough already.

- ''I have the right to believe that the Earth is flat and that all science should be completely outlawed and eradicated. Simply having this ''''right'''' does NOT in any way mean that it is a ''''right'''' that should be exercised.'' '' A world of militantly intolerant hardheads like Rooney would be a world devoid of all the protections and freedoms which distinguish this country from any other on Earth.''

And living in a world where the ''Truth_Police'' tell you what rights you should & should not exercise leads to living in a world of Hitlers, Stalins, and Maos. - Reply to this comment
