Auto Bailout Headed For Defeat

(The Politico)  The Senate vote to cut off debate on the auto industry bailout is under way, but Harry Reid has already made it clear that the deal is dead due to Republican opposition.

After hours of private negotiations and public speeches, Reid says he doesn't have the 60 votes. What happens next is unclear.

The vote wasn't even complete before Michigan Democrat Carl Levin was decrying the action and asking the Senate to stay in session to work out a deal.

"I call on the leaders of the Senate to keep us in session, and let us go back to work tomorrow to try to fashion an agreement that will keep our domestic auto industry operating into next year and beyond," Levin said." We certainly owe that much to all Americans who will be harmed by our failure to act here tonight, and that is most Americans since a failure tonight will be felt throughout our economy and in every community across this country."
