Poll: U.S. Largely Optimistic About Obama

(CBS)  Despite a grim economic landscape that has led to cutbacks in holiday spending and overwhelmingly negative perceptions of the economy, 75 percent of Americans are optimistic about Barack Obama's presidency, a new CBS News poll finds.

That's the highest level of optimism that any incoming president has garnered in the past thirty years. Seventy percent were optimistic when Bill Clinton took office in 1993, the second highest level, while 64 percent were optimistic when George W. Bush took office in 2001, the lowest level.

In addition, seven in 10 Americans approve of the people the president-elect has chosen for his incoming administration, and most think his choices will bring experience as well as change to Washington.

There is widespread and growing confidence in Mr. Obama on the issues as well: Seventy-seven percent are confident that he will make the right decisions on the economy, up from 65 percent from September. Seventy-one percent are confident he will make the right decisions on protecting the U.S. from terrorism, an increase of 11 percent from September. And 68 percent have confidence in his decision-making on the war in Iraq, an increase of 12 percent.

Sixty-three percent think Mr. Obama will make a good president, including 29 percent who think he will be very good.

More than seven in ten Americans approve of the president-elect's cabinet picks so far; just 12 percent disapprove. By contrast, just 58 percent approved of President Bush's cabinet picks in 2001. Even nearly half of Republicans approve of Mr. Obama's picks.

And there is widespread approval for Mr. Obama's decision to tap former primary rival Hillary Clinton to be secretary of state, with 72 percent approving of the choice. In fact, overall views of Clinton are very positive now: Fifty-five percent of Americans presently have a favorable opinion of the New York senator, matching her previous high achieved in January 1999, just after the House of Representatives had impeached her husband.

Seventy-three think the people Mr. Obama has selected will bring the right kind of experience to government. And although many of Mr. Obama's choices have served in high-level government positions during the Clinton administration, 65 percent think they will bring new ideas to government.

Nearly seven in ten Americans expect Mr. Obama to bring Americans together in the next four years. Sixty-four percent expect the president-elect to bring real change to Washington.

Still, few Americans - 21 percent - think Mr. Obama will to able to accomplish all the goals he set out in his campaign.

Fifty-five percent approve of the president-elect, the highest percentage to date. Just 12 percent disapprove. Forty percent approve of Michelle Obama, while 10 percent disapprove and roughly half don't know enough to have an opinion.

President Bush's job approval ratings remain low. Twenty-four percent of Americans approve of the job he is doing, while 68 percent disapprove.

Americans have become more optimistic about the war in Iraq and less so about the war in Afghanistan. Fifty-six percent now think the Iraq war is going at least somewhat well - the most positive assessment of the war since former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was captured in December 2003. But 62 percent think the war in Afghanistan is going at least somewhat badly.

In the wake of the bombings in Mumbai, India, concern about the possibility of a terrorist attack in the next few months has risen slightly, though most Americans don't think it is likely that there will be another terrorist attack in the next few months.

Nine percent say such an attack is very likely, while 36 percent say it is somewhat likely; 53 percent say it is not likely.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,390 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone December 4-8, 2008. Phone numbers were dialed from RDD samples of both standard land-lines and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher.

Fellow liberals, get ready, because the rrepublicans, the bubba''s, the good ole boys etc, will try to smear Obama with every chance they get. Even when he does something great he will receive nothing but criticism and hatred. Too bad the conservatives are a minority now, and shrinking every day.

Time to get Obama to end the two unneccessary tragic occupations and murder in Asia and the Middle East. Pressure him to end corporate domination of our country or else we start GENERAL STRIKES. Enough sick, twisted and violent right wingery for American hegemony!!!!!

Poll taken the day before they hauled-off Blago? Time to take a new one, this one''s already irrelevant-

WHY did Obama lie about discussing the seat with Blagojevich?

WHO from Team Obama offered Blago a corporate BOD position for his wife?

HOW OFTEN was Emanuel in touch with Blago''s people?

WHAT did they mean on the FBI wiretap when Blago''s advisers said Obama had to "suck it up" for the next couple years? Temporarily refrain from cheating, bribing, and stealing Chicago-style?

And, Blago''s (convicted) bagman was Rezko... you know, the guy that helped Barack buy that nice house? And raised tons of money for both Barack and Blago?

Wake up, pollyanna Obamaphiles... the dream is over already. When reality hits, it hits hard... especially when suppressed for so long.

I guess you won''t be getting that Senate seat now either, Chris Matthews- should have just bought this one from Hot Rod when you had the chance, LOL

Let the truth be told... the de-programming of the Obama Cult is desperately needed, and seriously overdue.

Would that it was already January 20, 2009, and Obama and the newly elected Democrats were already seated! If the Republican''s keep up their shenanigans, the Country may not last that long!!!

Given the horror that was the last 8 years of the most corrupt and destructive administration the U.S. has ever had, and one of the bottom 5 in the entire history of nation states........."Big O" could fall into a coma January 21st, not wake up ''til 2012 and STILL do a better job running this country than the disaster we have now.

Condi Rice is conservative... however, she is NOT a republican... she ran as Vice president under Pat Buchannon in the 2000 presidential election...

The truth is that Obama is and never was experianced to lead a country. Posted by greathope123 at 01:01 PM : Dec 10, 2008
**** you don''t need "experience" to lead a country.... You just have to have a leader that supports the right people... if we wanted a leader with the most experience... we would just always vote for the oldest person... that would be stupid.. we should vote for the person that supports the working class people(Obama)... not the person that supports the very wealthiest and illegals(amnesty mccain)! It was a very easy choice this past election... the republicans need to stop putting up candidates that support amnesty for illegals... if the rich republican businessmen want a republican in the white house ever again... they need to atleast give us working class people something in return... no amnesty for illegal immigrants that would take our jobs away from us! That is why I hate Mccain... Atleast Huckabee or Romney wouldn''t have tried passing amnesty for millions of illegals like amnesty mccain wants... and still wants to try doing in the senate... Arizonians are stupid for electing amnesty mccain to the senate so many times!

The truth is that Obama is and never was experianced to lead a country. The fact that Americans voted for him is that they want Hope for a better future. Nothing wrong with that. But, if you put your inexperianced worker in charge of your company then go bankrupt inevitably, whose to blame? OH, you are. Simply, Obama is as corrupt as the next Politican, and those who want to believe otherwise will find out the truth in no time.

*** Obama may be inexperienced... but i''ll still take Obama over amnesty mccain anyday of the week... instead of making claims that Obama isn''t ready to lead the country.. why don''t you republicans come up with better candidates that don''t tolerate amnesty or illegals???? I wouldn''t have voted for Amnesty Mccain if he was the last american left alive... that guy is the most corrupt politician on Capital hill and he claimed to be a maverick.. he was no maverick... he was Bush''s sidekick! The only times Amnesty Mccain goes against the republicans, he goes against most democrats too... other than a few senators from both sides.. most democrats and republicans were completely AGAINST the dream act, that would have given amnesty to over 20 million illegals!

Bush should resign now. *** he should have resigned years ago!
Then *** Cheney becomes President (that would really send the liberals
into orbit)!!!
Then he appoints Condoleeza Rice as VP.
Then Cheney resigns two weeks later and Condoleeza Rice, A Republican,
becomes the first BLACK President and the first WOMAN President!!
then we can concentrate on getting a qualified president instead of a "historical" one

*** what has condi rice done that gives her such qualifications to be president??? Maybe if you stupid republicans put up a better candidate than amnesty mccain.... maybe we wouldn''t be having president Obama... however... I''m happy to see a democrat back in the white house after 8 years of Bush failures! Experince and qualifications are two totally different terms... I''d rather have a 4 year senator like Obama who has been a community organizer... rather than amnesty mccain who tried passing a bill to give over 20 million illegals amnesty! Even most republicans couldn''t stand Amnesty Mccain! Get better candidates and maybe you will start winning elections... rather than just being the "other person" in elections!
