Tony Sandlin, snowboard-in-hand, with mother, Stacey, and brother, Vincent, on The Early Show Monday (CBS)
Tony Sandlin was snowboarding with his six-year-old brother, Vincent, at a local golf course behind their home in Erie, Colo., east of Boulder, when they the coyote approached, circling Tony, then biting him on his right arm.
Tony was able to stop the attack by whacking the coyote on the side of the face with his snowboard.
He's currently going through a series of rabies shots, which are very painful.
Tony, his mother, Stacey, and Vincent, spoke with Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith Monday:

- Re the "coyotes don''t attack humans because they are afraid of them" argument -- even squirrels will attack a human if it is RABID. Duh. In fact, that is one of the warning signs of rabies -- animals suddenly becoming unafraid of and aggressive towards humans. Sheesh.

- truthrocks..that was 10 minutes of google research.
I let experts speak for themselves...but clearly coyote''s do in fact attack humans, despite the mewling protestations to the contrary. - Reply to this comment
- Ampsanne, If you do a little research, there are more reported coyote atttacks reported in the USA per year than there are wolf attacks. Between 1998-2003 there were 48 reported attacks by coyotes in California alone according to http://repositories.cdlib.org/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1004&context=anrrec/hrec
The report, research published by University of California, Davis...illustrates that the people here saying coyotes don''t attack people are absolutely full of bovine feces. In that same period, there weren''t that many wolf attacks on humans in the whole of the United States. I so love when people who clearly are ignorant spout off like they are experts. - Reply to this comment
- This was more likely a stray dog that attacked the boy. Coyotes tend to avoid humans, their primary predators.
As for wolves, coyote populations were kept in check by wolves. It wasn''t until humans started trying to drive wolves to extinction that the coyote population exploded and spread. Wolves both preyed upon and competed with coyotes. Also, it would take a supreme idiot to confuse a wolf with a coyote. - Reply to this comment

But you did respond and with your scurrilous slanders and impotent insults!~
Then he said "They expose your SHORTcomings and lunacy better than I can."
Nothing expose your shortcomings more than your replies to my posts. My posts are filled with accurate data about gun violence. Your replies are moronic attacks on me. You attack the messenger because you got nothing against the message. The message rocks. Therefore, the messenger rocks too!~ - Reply to this comment

- You people are hilarious! This poor kid looks like a Road Runner to a starving Wile. E. and some jackass condems guns. Another idiot liberal blames the attack on Republicans for cutting down the trees (I bet this person lives in a wood house, too. Probably made in China.). One more brainless fool, probably from NYC, says it''s all a hoax because coyotes (pronounced ki-yoh-tee by those who don''t know any better) don''t attack humans (tell that to the kid who''s undergoing rabies shots). And there there''s the one who says coyotes don''t attack humans; wolves do (funny, I don''t think there''s ever been a reported wolf attack in the history of the United States). And wolves are not too common around Boulder, though they are known to be in CO thanks to the idiots who reintroduced them to Yellowstone with no plan for controlling them.
Personally, I think the animals are starting their revolt against humans. We''ve known for a long time they intend to take back their environment, and move into our cushy houses. We''ll all be pressed into slavery to serve them! The coyote was the scout. The rabbits and squirrels are next! I''m heading to the store to stock up on ammo and snowboards!

That kid should let gun owners borrow a little bit of courage from him so they could face dangers without guns!~ After all, most of the times they use their guns they use them against unarmed criminals or unarmed coyotes!~ "LOL", 2008

maybe if the kid had a gun and shot the animal he would not have been bitten. Or if the neighbors were armed, the Coyote would have been killed before it could attack. Never know do you???- Reply to this comment
- Coyotes usually only attack baby humans. It it was rabid, it could attack ANYTHING.

- I have to agree with Dogsout. Coyotes do not attack people----wolves do. Sometime ago we had a coyote walk down our long driveway. I thought it was an unnourished Collie, so I went out and walked right up to it. I was within 3 ft. of it, and it looked at me and took off. It just looked like a dirty old skinny Collie. This boy might have been mistaken in indentifying it as a coyote.

- "Coyotes do not attack people because they are afraid of people. Repeat. Coyotes do not attack people because they are afraid of people."
You idiot... coyotes don''t GENERALLY attack people... it doesn''t mean they ''do not''. They have before, and they will again - that''s a simple documented fact. Is it rare? Of course - very rare in fact... but it happens from time to time. - Reply to this comment
- I would like an Acme Snowboard. Especially to fend off Wily E Coyote on the slopes, or in this case, the Golf Course.

- I had the rabies in 1957, one a day for 14 days. It may hurt some people but mine was not sore nor did it make me sick. People are scared to death by others. I am sure that some people do get sick and are sore. The reason that they are given in the stomach is that is one of the most sensitive places on your body.
Lighten up a little folks, everyones body reacts different to medicine''s. - Reply to this comment

- It figures. Here''s a story about a coyote attack and you get a moron condmning guns.
Over 12,000 people are killed by homicide per year.
Do you know what scares me more than guns?
All those *** drunk drivers out there!
Drunk drivers kill more people every year than guns!
Over 42,000 people per year!
5.4 Million people per year die from tobacco related causes!
Where''s your outrage against alcohol and tobacco, rruthrocks?
Or should you change your name to truth_hurts?
-----------------------------------------------------
How many people are attacked by a pack of coyotes? None...1...2...3 per year? How many people are attacked with guns? 1.7 MILLION!~ Do not be afraid of coyotes. Be afraid of all those guns out there. They are designed to kill people. Coyotes aren''t.

- However, the modern rabies vaccine does not require such a strategy. Today, if there is a possibility that the virus has made it into the body, then the patient is given immune globulin and vaccine by injection. While the vaccine site may swell and be painful for a short period of time, this is nothing compared to the former, now outmoded strategy.

I just went through the rabies vaccines and they are still painful, especially with the first set of injections that included the globulin. I also experienced flu like symptoms and achy joints throughout the 6 weeks and the 5 series of shots. You''re right though, they probably aren''t nearly as bad as the old days. - Reply to this comment

The kid still used a weapon, a snowboard. Which proves my point that anything can be used as a weapon if there is determination. - Reply to this comment
You need to stay on topic truthrocks. There''s no mention of guns in the article, just a kid and a coyote, and snowboard.
Are you really that obsessed about guns?
If you are, you may need some professional help.- Reply to this comment
