(CBS/ AP)  Authorities say a Good Samaritan used a frozen turkey to club a man as
the man was committing a carjacking at a North Carolina grocery store.

According to police:

Thirty-year-old Fred Louis Ervin, of Raleigh, stole money from a Garner BP gas station before running across the street to the parking lot of a Harris Teeter in Fuquay-Varina, just south of Raleigh. There, he began beating Irene Moorman Bailey while trying to take her car. Other shoppers came to Bailey's rescue, including a man who hit Ervin with the only weapon he could find: a frozen turkey. He hit the suspect several times in the head with it.

Despite head injuries, Ervin got away in Bailey's car, hitting several other cars as he fled. But he was arrested a short time later.

Ervin faces several charges, including assault, inflicting serious injury, larceny and hit and run.

He was being treated at WakeMed Raleigh Campus. Hospital officials said he was in good condition.

Frozen turkeys are, of course, hard as a rock.

"I don't know, in my 30 some year career, if I've heard of someone getting in a fight with a frozen turkey involved! " Fuquay-Varina Police Chief Larry Smith told reporters.

Mr. Fred Louis Ervin now stands a good chance to file a law-suit against first the Harris Teeter shopper for assault and battery with a frozen turkey; Second suit against Ms. Irene Moorman Bailey for obstructing his chance to get away from the above assault; Third suit against the hospital for malpractice; Last suit against the officer for not finding him a lawyer. Is this a free country or what?!

I think the gas station should give Mr. Fred Louis Ervin the money as bail-out; The Harris Teeter shopper should hand over the frozen turkey as Thanksgiving spirit; Ms. Irene Moorman Bailey should offer her car and key to speed up his get-away; Hospital should provide free health care and the officer should resign! Now I call that PC "Justice"!

Just wait, the date that Mr. Fred Louis Ervin appears in court, his parent(s), long-lost relative(s) would march in from the woods and proclaim that "Fred is a good kid and it''s the system that failed him and made him what he becomes today!" It ain''t gonna be his nor his parent(s)''s fault at all! BTW, has anyone seen Fred''s resume - long list of criminal records - very impressive. I think he might run some public office one of these days...NOT!

As a potential weapon, frozen turkeys should be banned since they could be deadly in the wrong hands.

Don''t forget swimming pools. Look how many children die in swimming accidents and drownings. And who reallly NEEDS a pool when there are public pools available???

I''m glad the little punk didn''t have a gun.

There''s nothing worse than taking a turkey to a gun fight.

I live 10 minutes from the crime scene and I''''m glad there wasn''''t any gun play needed.

Yes, it would have been MUCH better if someone had been able to just dunk the robber in a swimming pool. Who wants to steal a car when you''re all wet?

But for some reason, there are few swimming pools in parking lots. I think something should be done about that.

I think we would greatly reduce gun ownership in this country if citizens could feel safe knowing that every parking lot has a swimming pool for dunking miscreants without needing those dangerous guns.

And if a few children happen to drown in the swimming pools, well that''s the price we would pay for increased safety without guns.

But, swimming pools are on my list of potential deadly weapons since they can used for the purpose of taking another''s life when in the wrong hands.

Well, that isn''t true. It is much worse to take a turkey to a poultry slaughter house. Just look at the recent uproar over the Sara Palin newscast about absolving one turkey which took place in front of the poultry house worker taking the life of some turkeys.

This story speaks well for the citizens of Raleigh. It''s good to know the people there really do watch out for each other.

"This story speaks well for the citizens of Raleigh. It''s good to know the people there really do watch out for each other."

A wee bit of a generalization. However, it''s nice to know that , although one might be at increased risk of being carjacked in Raleigh, one may expect one''s physical, psychological, and property damage to be avenged by frozen poultry, canned pumpkin, cranberries fired through a pee-shooter, etc.
