New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer is the target of a federal prostitution investigation.

(AP)  The prostitute at the center of the scandal that brought down former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer says she's undergone "intense" psychotherapy since the events that generated national headlines - and feels especially bad for his wife.

Ashley Alexandra Dupre tells People magazine that the FBI informed her in early March that it was investigating one of her clients. A few days later, she found out which client when she recognized Spitzer on TV - resigning.

That was March 12, after revelations Spitzer had used Emperors Club VIP, where Dupre worked.

Her mother, Carolyn, alerted her to turn on the TV during Spitzer's farewell speech. Dupre said she was stricken by his wife's pained expression.

"I try not to revisit that place too often, but when I think about his speech, I think of her face, her eyes, the hurt," she said.

Her message to Silda Wall Spitzer: "I'm sorry for your pain."

Dupre said Spitzer was polite and businesslike when they met. "Some guys, they want to have conversations and really get to know each other. With him, it clearly was not like that," she said. "It was more of a transaction. Strictly business."

Dupre, who was known then as Kristen, said she practiced safe sex with all her clients, including Spitzer. On her attorney's advice, she declined to elaborate on their liaison, or say whether Spitzer visited her more than once. She did say that he dressed casually and she did not see his security detail.

Dupre said she quit the escort business temporarily in April 2007 after falling in love with a wealthy married man. "It started to be scary. ... What if I got AIDS? Got killed?" After they broke up, she went to work at the Emperor's Club. It was during that period that she met Spitzer.

Dupre also sat down with Diane Sawyer for an ABC "20/20" segment to be aired Friday night. In that interview, she reveals how an "upper middle-class, girl next door got into the profession and the psychological journey she continues to experience."

Four people have pleaded guilty to running the prostitution operation. Last week, federal prosecutors said they wouldn't bring criminal charges against Spitzer.

Dupre, 23, envisions a future for herself in the worlds of music, fashion and "writing books" - but not prostitution. "Never again."

no, your mis informed, *** is the lowest level of prostitution, hooker is a lil higher on the rung but a call girl i.e. high class call girl does not go out for 20 bucks. at least prostitution the woman is being paid, a *** who could be worse than a *** or run high class is a ***. they don''t get paid. legalization would keep it cleaner and safer. Like abortion, illegal= back alley, unclean, scandalous. and environmental risks. Same goes with prostitution and drugs. You know how much money we waste on the war on drugs and mister meaner crimes and how long now? we could bail out the auto makers many times over.

It makes me sick when people refer to women like this as "high-class call-girls". She is a prostitute, a hooker, a w--h--o--r--e--!!! And she should not be rewarded with magazine articles and television interviews.

Well obviously Ashley attracts a lot of jealousy from wives who don''t believe they have an obligation to meet the needs of the husband. If Ashley were available at a legal brothel in Nevada, I''d cough up whatever money was necessary. And I''m sure I''d be day dreaming about how fabulous it was for the rest of my life. Jealous, lazy women will always try to suppress the thrill made possible by lovely ladies like Ashley.

I couldn''t agree more. She''s nothing but a *** and *** are not high class. The media and entertainment industry are glamorizing such activity and have been doing so for some time now. It''s getting worse everyday. For example, ET had a piece on porn *** and referred to them as porn "stars". I did not watch the show. This occured during their preview. What kind of message is this sending to our kids. It''s telling them that it''s ok and that they''ll be rewarded for such behavior. And lets not forget the piece that just aired regarding porn in relationships. Obviously the man in that segment is a porn conesuir and rationlizes his behavior by coming up with ridiculous excuses that point at women as the cause of such behavior. I can''t even watch tv without something nasty popping up. I''m sooooooo sick of it.

-Well, what she''s trying to say is she''d be tempted by running as VEEP for the next Republican president nominee! With more success than Lipstick, hoefully! LOL!

Since Spitzer''s party is not mentioned, he must be a Democrat.

If she truly cared about Mrs. Spitzer she''d shut up and let the woman heal.

Stupid stupid stupid women like her set us all back.

I''m not sure why this story is still a story or any kind of a revelation. Prostituion is one of the worlds oldest professions and without Ashley Dupre it will still be around.

It is very easy for posts on here and elsewhere to be critical of former NY Governor Spitzer, because he cheated on his Wife. What is not taken into consideration here is the possibilty Spitzer may have a *** addiction which would account for the risky behavior.

Of course not everyone that pays a prostiute is an addict, but when a person that was high profile as Spitzer and had so much to loose, one can''t help but wonder what the motivations are. Besides I believe what goes on in a persons marriage is their own business and that of the family, not the entire public. If Spitzer was doing a good job as NY Governor this incident should not have forced him to resign.

She first stated she "always practiced safe ***" then later on reported her fears were "what if I got AIDS" Does she know how you contract the virus?

If I were Spitzer''s wife, I would have kicked him to the curb as soon as this story was verified. If you are going to be a sleeze, don''t get caught and embarass your family. His wife and children are the victims here.
