(CBS)  A priest at a South Carolina Roman Catholic church says his parishioners shouldn't take Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because of the Democrat's stance on abortion.

The Reverend Jay Scott Newman said Thursday that church law doesn't allow him to refuse parishioners the sacrament at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville.

But, reports CBS affiliate WSPA, Newman said his congregants shouldn't take communion until they do penance for supporting the man he called the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president.

"We cannot leave our faith outside the voting booth," Newman told WSPA.

"It was absolutely inconceivable that a Catholic could say, 'I could vote for this otherwise extraordinary man and hope that the consequence won't be a widening of the abortion license and an increase in the number of abortions,'" Newman said.

Newman said that if a voter through his or her political action ("whether intended or not") contributed to the promotion of abortion, they need to "deal with it in the sacrament of penance."

In a letter to parishioners, Newman wrote:
"Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exits constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ’s Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation.
Penance, Newman noted, could include prayers, reading scripture or performing works of charity.

Newman also wrote, however, that Obama - as the duly-elected next President - will hold legitimate authority over the nation, and so asked his congregants to pray for him, "and to cooperate with him whenever conscience does not bind us otherwise.

"Let us hope and pray that the responsibilities of the presidency and the grace of God will awaken in the conscience of this extraordinarily gifted man an awareness that the unholy slaughter of children in this nation is the greatest threat to the peace and security of the United States and constitutes a clear and present danger to the common good," he wrote.

"Religious citizens, even the ordained, do have a responsibility to join their voices to the public debate, so that the common good is well-served," Newman told WSPA.

The priest went on to say he supports the separation between church and state.

In their annual meeting earlier this week, the nation's Roman Catholic bishops vowed to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights, vowing to fight what they called "aggressively pro-abortion policies, legislation and executive orders."

"The recent election was principally decided out of concern for the economy, for the loss of jobs and homes and financial security for families, here and around the world," the bishops wrote. "If the election is misinterpreted ideologically as a referendum on abortion, the unity desired by President-elect Obama and all Americans at this moment of crisis will be impossible to achieve."

Thank Fr. Newman for his courage! The truth stings the ones who do not want to hear it! The legal battles are going to come in order to defend the innocent ones and end the holocust of abortion! Thank God I am Catholic. In regards to moral leadership and recent scandals try and get the correct statistics before you cast the first stone!

Toss them up to God and let Him hurl them down on the sinner. Just make sure you toss them straight up and real hard so he can catch them without reaching too far. They will hit the real sinner.

Billy Graham''''s Prayer For Our Nation

THIS MAN SURE HAS A GOOD VIEW OF WHAT''''S HAPPENING TO OUR COUNTRY!

''''Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, ''''Woe to those who call evil good,'''' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor''''s possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and Set us free. Amen!''''

Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on his radio program, ''''The Rest of the Story,'''' and received a larger response to this program than any other he has ever aired. With the Lord''''s help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we again can be called ''''One nation under God.''''

Shame on you, Fr. Newman! The last time I checked, the Catholic Church, or at least its clergy, had lost credibility in the moral leadership department (pedophilia scandal, un-Christian treatment of women, intolerance). Perhaps this priest should worry about cleaning up his own house before he tries to tell the rest of us we''re sinners for not sharing his myopic vision. HE SHOULD DO PENANCE for his church''s sins & for trying to trick people into voting for the party that is pro-war and anti-social gospel! And I''m Catholic, BTW.

BEING A SPIRITUAL CARING CONSERVATIVE I BELIEVE THIS PRIEST HAS GONE THE EXTRA MILE TO PROVE TO NON-SPIRITUALS THAT ORGANIZED religions ARE WELL- DEFINED CULTS. PEOPLE NEED TO ASK THEMSELVES "WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?".

Hopefully Americans can now see the Religous Right for who they really are.

As long as you are Anti-abortion (don''t even say Pro-Life since that is just marketing vodoo), then you can kill all the other people you want, marry multiple teenage girls, be a pedophile, murder innocent civilians, and you will go to heaven.

What rubish!

THERE ARE ALOT OF HYPOCRACY AMONG THOSE WHO CRY ABORTION IS A CRIME AND SIN BLUH BLUH . THEY ARE SUPOSEDLY PROTECTING THE UNBORN BUT WHEN THAT UNBORN BECOMES A CHILD OF WEDLOCK TO A TEEN MOTHER IN POWERTY, THEY WILL NOT PROVIDE HELP FOR THE MOTHER AND THE CHILD.

WE HAVE ALOT OF CHILDREN LIVING IN POWERTY WHO DO NOT HAVE HEALTH CARE, FOOD AND A DECENT ENVIRONMENT TO GROW UP. THEY ARE THE ONES WHO SHOULD HAVE THE PRIORITY NO THE FETUS.
DOGMATIC RELIGION FEED ON FEAR AND SOMETIMES ON FALSE HOPE, SO THE CLERGY CAN HAVE A FREE RIDE AND GET FAT AT THE EXPENSE OF MASSES. THEY ALWAYS PLUG INTO PEOPLE''S EMOTIONS AND NEVER TO WISDOM AND RATIONALITY.

TO HAVE A BELIFE AND FAITH OF ANY SORT IS GOOD BUT NOT THROUGH FEAR AND BRAIN WASH.

This priest should be defrocked. He reportedly told parishioners they committed a a "mortal sin" by voting for Obama. Another racist religious radical in a collar preaching hate. Makes Rev. Wright look sane.

When I was a child, we went to church frequently and my father was an elder in the First Christian Church. I was taught fear---that I might be tortured for eternity in h*ll and guilt, and shame. Things were fine until life really tested me and then I totally lost faith. Then I found a higher power and my life has been an incredible spiritual journey since. Dogma is just wrong and most of it is based on ancient pagan beliefs---rather than what Christ taught, which was "fear not, ye are Gods, forgiveness and love." The way we will solve abortion is when we change our society---not criminalizing it. Obama will help change our society for the better and as we grow spiritually and in love and truth, problems like abortion will just melt away.
