President-elect Barack Obama addresses the nation and the world after his victory.

(CBS)  One of the things he will do as president is create a program to help keep homeowners from foreclosure, says President-elect Barack Obama in his first post-election interview.

Obama and future First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft on Friday yesterday in a wide-ranging interview to be broadcast this Sunday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

He also said he would make cabinet appointments soon and would name a Republican.

In the interview, Obama tells Kroft about the change in his life the election victory has caused, the need to set his priorities and talks about a variety of issues, including the economic crisis, the failing auto industry, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and America's prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Following are excerpts from the interview:

On Helping Homeowners Avoid Foreclosure:

STEVE KROFT: Once you become President are there things that you'll change?

BARACK OBAMA: We have not focused on foreclosures and what's happening to homeowners as much as I would like…We've got to…set up a negotiation between banks and borrowers so that people can stay in their homes. That is going to have an impact on the economy as a whole. And, you know, one thing I'm determined is that if we don't have a clear focused program for homeowners by the time I take office, we will after I take office.

On His Interaction With Paulson:

STEVE KROFT: Are you in sync with Secretary Paulson in terms of how the $700 billion is being used?

BARACK OBAMA: Well, look Hank Paulson has worked tirelessly under some very difficult circumstances…I think Hank would be the first one to acknowledge that probably not everything that's been done has worked the way he had hoped it would work. You know what we've done is we've assigned somebody on my transition team who interacts with him on a daily basis. And, you know, we are getting the information that's required and we're making suggestions in some circumstances about how we think they might approach some of these problems.

STEVE KROFT: Are they listening?

BARACK OBAMA: We'll find out.

On Aiding The Auto Industry:

STEVE KROFT: The Congress has said there are not the votes in Congress to pass any kind of a relief package for General Motors.

BARACK OBAMA: For the auto industry to completely collapse would be a disaster in this kind of environment…So it's my belief that we need to provide assistance to the auto industry. But I think that it can't be a blank check. So my hope is that over the course of the next week, between the White House and Congress, the discussions are shaped around providing assistance but making sure that that assistance is conditioned on labor, management, suppliers, lenders, all of the stakeholders coming together with a plan -- what does a sustainable U.S. auto industry look like? So that we are creating a bridge loan to somewhere as opposed to a bridge loan to nowhere. And that's I think what you haven't yet seen.

On Reading President Abraham Lincoln:

BARACK OBAMA: I've been spending a lot of time reading Lincoln…there is a wisdom there and a humility about his approach to government, even before he was president, that I just find very helpful.

STEVE KROFT: Put a lot of his political enemies in his cabinet.

BARACK OBAMA: He did.

STEVE KROFT: Is that something you're considering?

BARACK OBAMA: Well, I tell you what. I find him a very wise man.

On The Challenges Ahead:

STEVE KROFT: Have there been moments when you've said, 'What did I get myself into?'

BARACK OBAMA: I will say that the challenges that we're confronting are enormous. And they're multiple. And so there are times during the course of a given a day where you think, "Where do I start in terms of moving-- moving things forward?" And I think that part of this next two months is to really get a clear set of priorities, understanding we're not going be able to do everything at once, making sure the team is in place, and moving forward in a very deliberate way and sending a clear signal to the American people that we're going to be thinking about them and what they're going through.

60 Minutes has covered the campaign and the election closely. Most recently, Kroft and 60 Minutes cameras were with Obama's top aides on election night for a segment broadcast on last Sunday's 60 Minutes that drew 18.5 million viewers, ranking it America's number-one program for the week.

Obama and Republican presidential candidate John McCain both appeared on 60 Minutes in separate exclusive interviews for a special one-hour broadcast of 60 Minutes on September 21. Kroft interviewed Obama and Scott Pelley spoke with McCain.

60 Minutes also did the first joint interview with Obama and his running mate, Vice President-elect Joseph Biden, with Kroft on the 60 Minutes broadcast of Aug. 31.

In addition, Obama and McCain also had separate exclusive interviews on 60 Minutes earlier this year in conjunction with the primary election, as did former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who was interviewed by Katie Couric.

Kroft also reported on the political battleground state of Ohio in a segment broadcast last March.

Obama haters, get over yourself. It is the Republicans who have left EVERY aspect of our country in a big hot mess. Why didn''t you speak up the last 8 years to repudiate the folks in your own party who were running our great country into the ground?

No answer? I thought not...so let those who have been recently elected along with many citizens who are ready, willing and able, get on with long hard work to get this country back on course.

I wonder whether the format will be of a friendly atmosphere or if he will be grilled analytically about his promises? We shall see if the media fauns over him, as if his answers are unquestionably true and correct! Anyone wanting and looking for change, pay close attention to what he says, also pay attention to the interveiwers facial expressions and body movements! One free Nation on earth that belongs to the people, let''s not let them change that! The media is not the neutral machine it says it is, it has an agenda! Otherwise why would they be the Judge and Jury of half of America, while being the Spokesperson for the other half of America???

Any intelligent person with a memory can search their own minds memory and find truth. The media knows it''s power of daily bombardment and how the people react to it! Prime example, tobacco, remember when that was all you heard on the news? It was so prevelent knowledge that even the totally disinterested knew about it. They talked the people into going along with the government fining the tobacco companies to protect the people that cunsumed the product. That was essentially partner in crime (Government subsidized tobacco for decades) suing partner in crime (Tobacco (Legal substance/product) provider). The price of tobacco went up (The fine being passed to the consumer), new taxes was levied against it and since the price increased so did the regular tax because of taxable dollar amount! Who is the loser, the poor consumer once again!! They figured a way to scheme the poor out of more of their money! Wake up people, the media is not your friend, they are the information/propaganda arm of a movement to take this country away from its owners, the people!!!!!!

Maybe the question will be asked of your new Predident, if he will pursue prosecutions of the ones truly responsible for the finantial meltdown? Up until about two years ago, the economy was on fire, everybody had money, unemployment was in the lower single digits, you had to basically hide from a job in most parts of the country!

All I see in these comments is more backbiting, faultfinding, and hate spewing back and forth. While I have my differences with the new President, I''m willing to give him a fair chance. He believes wrong on abortion, his tax plan as stated is a disaster waiting to happen, but he has yet to take the Oath of Office. Let''s be fair to him, OK?

For months now I have been reading the political comments posted by readers online and I have noticed that the extreme conservative Republicans are especially hateful, and most of them fill their comments with Rush Limbaugh sound bites. Rush Limbaugh has had way too much "freedom of speech" during these last 8 years, encouraged and allowed to do so by the Republican administration. Limbaugh has poisoned a large bloc of Republican citizens, keeping them trapped in an attitude 25 years out of date. He stokes their fears and amplifies their worst characteristics, driving them to see an enemy in everything out of the conservative box. This prevents these people from accepting the changes and advances of 21st century America, isolating them and making it harder and harder for them to live productive and happy lives. It is my hope that the Obama administration will rein in the poison conservative talk show faction, and the people who follow it and live by it can be healed of their unwarranted hate and bigotry.

To these people I say: there is no reason to be so hateful and fearful! Rush has it all wrong! This is a great country, full of good people, patriots all, and great possibilites for a happy and prosperous life. That neighbor whose views differ from yours is not a terrorist or a socialist or a communist, he''s just the fellow American next door. Learn to feel love and hope and generousity. Stop fearing and hating. God bless America!

It''s unfortunate and sad that the right wing folks on this blog have so little faith in the president elect''s ability to enact change. Regardless of teams/ideological/labels, I would hope that we as a nation will get out of this financial mess. Of course we have differences on how to make that happen. But do we really need to attack one and other before the new president and congress even has an opportunity to act? I mean, common people. I would hope that we all want to get out of this mess and the name calling does not accomplish that.

Spoken like a true leftist and student of the Bill of Rights. You see in B. Hussien Obama''s America you can have such a thing as "too much free speech".

"It is my hope that the Obama administration will rein in the poison conservative talk show faction, and the people who follow it and live by it can be healed of their unwarranted hate and bigotry."

Yes listeners of talk radio must be re-educated. Perhaps in camps. Then they too can be healed by the Grace of Obama. Get a clue mediaspy_nv. If your ideas are superior present them against the evil of talk radio. Don''t try to enforce the superiority of your views through the tyranny of government. Compete in the arena of ideas. Or perhaps you already have. And failed.

You "winners" may crow about this election and you have that right under that whole first Amendment thing that mediaspy_nv is such an expert in.
I encourage you to try to foist every radical leftist position you have on America. It will make it that much sweeter when you get your collective rear ends handed to you. And history shows that is the usual result in an off year election when your guy is in the White House.

America has spoken. And America says it%u2019s time for change. Whether we like it or not the democratic election brought Barack Obama to its highest peak. It''s not much, but it''s a start. Newly elected Obama promised us change, and hoping the next four years brings enough change. We%u2019ve all heard of Obama%u2019s %u201CBlueprint for Change.%u201D If you%u2019re an employee of the federal government, and you want to see just how it will affect you. According to Eric Pianin and Lois Romano of the Washington Post, there are dozens of proposals in his Blueprint that could change the career path of many of the 1.8 million current federal employees. He plans to look at all the waste, and cut line by line. %u201CI am not a Democrat that believes we can or should defend every government program just because it%u2019s there,%u201D he says. That may sound scary for some, and send others running for personal loans, but bear in mind that Obama has a broad domestic agenda that could move skilled employees from threatened divisions into new programs under his policies. He also plans to encourage young public servants with his sense of idealism to get involved in restoring the American dream through service.

I love listening to these Republicans howling about the dangers the left poses to America. They are the same knuckleheads that were telling us everything was fine and dandy during the Bush years. They were also the same clowns that were telling us that McSame was the answer to the current problems. Listen close, GOP - in the last eight years you have damaged America worse than our enemies have. YOU are the real threats to America. So why don''t you all shut your collective pie holes and let''s give someone else a try because let''s face it - how could he be any worse than you guys?

just hope obama realizes that whatever he says, now that he is president-elect, can cause the stock market to go down or up. prefer his answers help stimulate the economy not reverse it as happens at times when bush speaks on the economy. whether anyone likes it or not, obama is potus for the next 4 years. hopefully, we will all join together to become part of the solution to get the nation back on its feet because the truth is, united we will stand but divided we will fall and be ripe for invasion by our many enemies around the world. if we fall, all american citizens lose regardless of political party.

HEY ko591
WITH THE WAY BLACKS HAVE BEEN TREATED IN THIS COUNTRY, MICHELLE HAD A RIGHT TO MAKE THAT STATEMENT. SHE WAS ACKNOWLEDGING THE FACT THAT AMERICANS WERE COMING TOGETHER (BLACK, WHITE, GREEN, PURPLE,IN-DIFFERENT)AND MAKING DECISIONS TOGETHER AS AMERICANS WITHOUT THE USELESS EMOTION OF SKIN COLOR DRIVING THEIR DECISIONS.

WHAT DID YOU CONTRIBUTE TO MAKE LIFE IN THIS COUNTRY BETTER FOR ALL RACES?
IF HER STATEMENT UPSET YOU OR EMBARRASSED YOU MAYBE YOU SHOULD ASK YOURSELF "WHY"?

DID HER STATEMENT FORCE YOU AND OHTERS TO FACE AN UGLY TRUTH OR CONTINUE TO BE IN DENIAL?

BEING THE LADY SHE IS I''M SURE YOU TOOK HER STATEMENT COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTEXT AS OTHERS DID.

I GREW UP DURING THE 60''S, IT WASN''T EXACTLY PLEASANT! I WAS FINALLY PROUD MYSELF, BECAUSE RACE WAS NOT A MAJOR ISSUE. AMERICA WAS FINALLY PUT ON THE FENCE TO CHOOSE THE BEST AMERICAN TO DO THE JOB AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

WE HAD OTHER GREAT AMERICANS BEFORE OBAMA WHO HAVE DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB. OUR CHOICE THIS TIME HAPPENS TO BE AN AMERICAN NAME BARACK OBAMA.

THE ELECTION OF OBAMA AS PRESIDENT DOES NOT MEAN AMERICANS SHOULD NOT DO THEIR PART TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY WHAT IT CAN AND SHOULD BE FOR EVERYONE. IT DOES PRESENT AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DONE NOTHING POSITIVE TO START.

BECOME A PART OF THE SOLUTION NOT THE PROBLEM!!

As with every November following a presidential election we now hear calls for unity and cooperation. The victor always extends a hand in friendship and the vanquished humbly accepts in hopes of clinging to some shred of power. To this I can only say %u201CResist!%u201D We must never give up what little we have in hopes of appearing civil. Civility in the face of tyranny, and make no mistake that is ultimately what we face in this new administration, is nothing but a synonym for suicide. I would rather starve than subsist on the poisonous crumbs tossed from the table of Marxism. The idea of collaboration with those who have sought to undermine our movement is revolting, especially to those who see this for what it truly is; a struggle for freedom.
Has the left not sought over the past eight years to cut the feet out from under this nation%u2019s rightfully elected leadership in a drive to delegitimize our world view?...

AngryCaptlst...

You sound EXACTLY like some people I remember from the late sixties... they were so opposed to their government, they sought to wreak havoc on its operation by a series of bombings. They did not intend physical harm to any persons, but as in any violent protest -- there were casualties, unintended -- but casualties nevertheless.

You no doubt have heard of at least one of these persons referred to as a "terrorist" by the losing team of political candidates (which I guess you supported) in this election.

You now, are the one who is espousing terrorism -- an extreme form of civil unrest -- in your case, you have not even one scintilla of the moral grounding that those sixties "radicals" had -- basing their actions on a government engaged in an immoral war.

The incoming administration is NOT Marxist nor will it ever be -- the lies you base your "protest" on are as weak as your personal moral compass.

Listen Repubs. 57 million of you were stupid enough to vote for the same policies that have sunk this country over the last 8 years. It''s a pretty good bet that Obama will do a better job, proving that the 64 million enlightened ones of us who voted for him were right. So for now shaddup and take your medicine.

According to the election results...

48% of all voting Americans think that Barack Obama is taking us in the wrong direction!

This will be a fun four years...

Really! Well at least its lower than the 89 percent who feel the country is currently headed in the wrong direction.

he "New GOP":

A radical far right party (it actually thinks it is "center right" LMAO) that bends over for the Religious nutcases who want to enforce their orthodoxy on the entire country.

The "New GOP" will regularly win Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Utah, Idaho, Alaska, and Oklahoma. Wow. Impressive.
