New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer is the target of a federal prostitution investigation.

(AP)  Federal prosecutors announced Thursday that they will not bring criminal charges against Eliot Spitzer for his role in a prostitution scandal, removing a legal cloud that has surrounded the former governor since his epic downfall eight months ago.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia said that investigators found no evidence that Spitzer or his office misused public or campaign funds for prostitution. Federal prosecutors typically do not prosecute clients of prostitution rings.

"In light of the policy of the Department of Justice with respect to prostitution offenses and the longstanding practice of this Office, as well as Mr. Spitzer's acceptance of responsibility for his conduct, we have concluded that the public interest would not be further advanced by filing criminal charges in this matter."

A remorseful Spitzer issued a statement in which he expressed relief that he will not face charges.

"I appreciate the impartiality and thoroughness of the investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office, and I acknowledge and accept responsibility for the conduct it disclosed. I resigned my position as Governor because I recognized that conduct was unworthy of an elected official. I once again apologize for my actions," Spitzer said.

Spitzer was out of town and unavailable for further comment.

Spitzer resigned March 12 after it was disclosed he was referred to in court papers as "Client-9," a man who met a prostitute known in a Washington, D.C., hotel. Garcia said that Spitzer later revealed to investigators that on multiple occasions he arranged for women to travel from one state to another state to engage in prostitution.

The scandal ruined a promising political career for Spitzer, who won a landslide election in 2006 with a vow to clean up corruption.

This is not surprising. Look at Bill Clinton. What he did damaged the image of the country and he got away with it. That was an injustice!!

Our supposed "leaders" get away with anything, don''t they? We should be holding them aggressively to the highest standards of behavior.

Everyone on Earth already knows this story and knows he is a Dem., downsteamjim. Really you need to go get drunk or something and get over the election. Get used to the fact that the Republican party for all practical purposes is dead. Ding dong the witch is dead and Bush was no where to be seen election night and NO one missed him. ----------------------

OMG what an excellent post! It''ll be interesting to see which way the GOP turns now in light of the dead and dying party. LOL -- Palin in 2012!! That''s SO not the way to go!

He ruined his family, name and career for the sake of a bj. This will never cease to amaze me. The only bright spot is New York is much better off with governor Paterson.

When democrats fall down the moral slippery slope of s e x scandal, they ''do it'' with women.
Republican men on the other hand, are either busted diddling little boys, or giving oral *** to strange men in public toilets......

Of course he won''''t get prosecuted. He was only cheating on his wife with ONE woman. If he wants to do it right he needs to consult with Mahoney (D) down in Florida, this clown has his own brothel. Clinton (D), Spitzerswallows (D), then Mahoney (D). Next up Obama (D), and don''''t give me that "family man" BS, because Clinton, Spitzer, and Mahoney claimed to be family men, UNTIL THEY GOT CAUGHT!

People will always look at Spitzer''''s children and think about what their father did. Spitzer''''s children will always think that people are thinking those things. Their lives will not be what they could have been. Do not be surprised if they start having trouble in school and drop out of college. Posted by websmith1 at 07:29 PM : Nov 06, 2008

Is that what Chelsea Clinton did?

the trial i want to see is when Bush is arraigned for war crimes, because of his lies thousands of Americans are dead.I never bought and never will that a 757 hit the pentagon, that building has more security cameras than any other building in the world and yet our government CANNOT show us one single video of that 757 hitting the building...NONE.If they lied about that how much bigger was the lie? We have lost rights and liberties because of all this and we want to know the real truth Mr. President Obama, you said you would deliver change....we want you to re investigate 911 for a change , lets do this investigation with no stones left unturned, and let the chips of responsibility fall where they may and those found responsible dealt with harshly.

Laws are made to protect the innocent. People will always look at Spitzer''s children and think about what their father did. Spitzer''s children will always think that people are thinking those things. Their lives will not be what they could have been. Do not be surprised if they start having trouble in school and drop out of college. Spitzer should have gone to prison for a very long time to protect the future innocent.

Silda gets what she gets for staying with him. People will always ask her children why she did that like they ask Clinton''s children.

No you scumbag,,,just another polititican got off.

If it were a regular "Joe", he would have been thrown in jail, fined out the wazzoo, and have his life ruined.

With Spitzer, just his life is ruined, which it should be. He was married, and still looking for more on the side..

What a b''asterd

Not so fast buckeroos. ES was being investigated by the feds for violation of federal law. Wick dipping with a retail flesh trader, per se, is a NY state criminal code violation. His former office of attorney general (that he ruled over like the jack booted thug that he is) could prosecute him. They won''t...but they could.

I thought part of the Spitzer deal was that he used state funds to partially cover for his escapades? If so, then he should have been criminally charged pretty much along the same lines of Stevens. Why hasn''t Mahoney in FL been charged criminally for the money he used in his affairs? I guess each state has it''s own level of tolerance. We don''t need a federal law, but we should have some consistency on similar crimes, charges and ultimate punishment. Oh well.

Geena5, then they should also pursue companies that hire illegal immigrants. They are the demand too. They dont.

Prostitiution between consenting adults should be legal. There is no constitutional basis for criminalizing *** between consenting adults....money or no money.
