Barack Obama's Grandmother Dies

(CBS/AP)  Barack Obama's grandmother Madelyn Dunham, whose personality and bearing shaped much of the life of the Democratic presidential contender, has passed away following a battle with cancer.

Obama and his half sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, announced the news in a statement Monday.

"She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances," they said. "She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure."

Fearing for her health, Obama left the campaign trail to visit the ailing Dunham in Hawaii on October 23rd and 24th. Dunham, who was 86, helped raise the Illinois senator. He praised her as the cornerstone of his family, "a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility."

The candidate learned of Dunham's death Monday morning while he was campaigning in Jacksonville, Florida. He planned to go ahead with campaign appearances.

The family said a private ceremony would be held later.

Obama said the decision to go to Hawaii was easy to make, telling CBS News that he "got there too late" when his mother died of ovarian cancer in 1995 at 53. He said he wanted to make sure "that I don't make the same mistake twice."

The McCain-Palin campaign offered their condolences in the following statement:

"We offer our deepest condolences to Barack Obama and his family as they grieve the loss of their beloved grandmother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them as they remember and celebrate the life of someone who had such a profound impact in their lives."

The Kansas-born Dunham and her husband, Stanley, raised their grandson for several years so he could attend school in Honolulu while their daughter and her second husband lived overseas. Her influence on Obama's manner and the way he viewed the world was substantial, the candidate himself told millions watching him accept his party's nomination in Denver in August.

"She's the one who taught me about hard work," he said. "She's the one who put off buying a new car or a new dress for herself so that I could have a better life. She poured everything she had into me."

Obama's nickname for his grandmother was "Toot," a version of the Hawaiian word for grandmother, tutu. Many of his speeches describe her working on a bomber assembly line during World War II.

Madelyn and Stanley Dunham married in 1940, a few weeks before she graduated from high school. Their daughter, Stanley Ann, was born in 1942. After several moves to and from California, Texas, Washington and Kansas, Stanley Dunham's job landed the family in Hawaii.

It was there that Stanley Ann later met and fell in love with Obama's father, a Kenyan named Barack Hussein Obama Sr. They had met in Russian class at the University of Hawaii. Their son was born in August 1961, but the marriage didn't last long. She later married an Indonesian, Lolo Soetoro, another university student she met in Hawaii.

Obama moved to Indonesia with his mother and stepfather at age 6. But in 1971, her mother sent him back to Hawaii to live with her parents. He stayed with the Dunhams until he graduated from high school in 1979.

In his autobiography, Obama wrote fondly of playing basketball on a court below his grandparents' 10th-floor Honolulu apartment, and looking up to see his grandmother watching.

It was the same apartment Obama visited on annual holiday trips to Hawaii, a weekling vacation from his campaign in August, and his pre-election visit in October. Family members said his grandmother could not travel because of her health.

Madelyn Dunham, who took university classes but to her chagrin never earned a degree, nonetheless rose from a secretarial job at the Bank of Hawaii to become one of the state's first female bank vice presidents.

"Every morning, she woke up at 5 a.m. and changed from the frowsy muu-muus she wore around the apartment into a tailored suit and high-heeled pumps," Obama wrote.

After her health took a turn for the worse, her brother said on Oct. 21 that she had already lived long enough to see her "Barry" achieve what she'd wanted for him.

"I think she thinks she was important in raising a fine young man," Charles Payne, 83, said in a brief telephone interview from his Chicago home. "I doubt if it would occur to her that he would go this far this fast. But she's enjoyed watching it."

Stanley Dunham died in 1992, while Obama's mother died in 1995. His father is also deceased.

When Obama was young, he and his grandmother toured the United States by Greyhound bus, stopping at the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park, Disneyland and Chicago, where Obama would years later settle.

It was an incident during his teenage years that became one of Obama's most vivid memories of Toot. She had been aggressively panhandled by a man and she wanted her husband to take her to work. When Obama asked why, his grandfather said Madelyn Dunham was bothered because the panhandler was black.

The words hit the biracial Obama "like a fist in my stomach," he wrote later. He was sure his grandparents loved him deeply. "And yet," he added, "I knew that men who might easily have been my brothers could still inspire their rawest fears."

Obama referred to the incident again when he addressed race in a speech in March during a controversy over his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. "I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother," he said.

Dunham was "a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world but who once confessed her fear of black men who passed her on the street."

Still, much of who Obama is comes from his grandmother, said his half sister.

"From our grandmother, he gets his pragmatism, his levelheadedness, his ability to stay centered in the eye of the story," she told The Associated Press. "His sensible, no-nonsense (side) is inherited from her."

Madelyn Lee Payne was born to Rolla and Leona Payne in October, 1922, in Peru, Kan., but lived much of her childhood in nearby Augusta.

She was the oldest of four children, and she loved to read everything from James Hilton's "Lost Horizon" to Agatha Christie's "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd."

Dunham and her husband were "vicious" bridge players, according to her brother Jack. After retirement, the two of them would take island cruises and do little but play bridge and a more difficult version called duplicate bridge.

5. Obama''s brother is a warlord in the ongoing fights in Kenya, Sudan, eastern and western african states. Obama did in fact deliver a diplomatic courier bag filled with cash to assist his brother in acquiring guns and ammunition to further his fighting and build his warchest.

These are just a few of the Obama Lies I will keep bloging as I uncover more. I hope that the ongoing lawsuit stops this monster from ever getting to the podium to be sworn in. This country is on a death watch with Obama at the helm, terrorist around the world celebrated his victory becuase they now know that the US is a prime target as we have a weak president and even weaker congress who will look the other way when they start killing inocent americans. Obama is for change.... remember Hitler campaigned on a platform of change too.

2. Anyone who believes that their taxes are going to go down is just a fool. The bush tax cuts are ending, this means that no matter what the taxes are going back up. Welcome to another Obama lie. The taxes will go up above and beyond the bush tax cuts and Obama will blame this on Bush saying that the Bush administration left the country in worse shape than they were telling anyone about and that in order to fix it Obama will have to raise taxes on everything including food and medications, institute a national sales tax and tax extensively if you drive a big rig or an suv.
3. Obama is not a christian, he was raised muslim and attended a midrasha. (muslim school) there are only two classes in a midrasha one is to create a politician and send them to other countries to spread the muslim faith and the other is to be a teacher of the muslim faith. Obama is the political side of this equation.
4. Obama openly admits his hatered for Isreal and for jews. He is also known for his support of the Taliban, al-queida and other terrorist organisations through his contacts such as Louis Farachan and Bill Ayres.

Well Obama has done it! The lies the deceptions the false birth records and his grandmother''s convenient death just before election time.
I hope all the Obama supporters will still support him when they realize that he is a liar, when their taxes go up, when they lose their jobs, their homes get forclosed on and their paychecks shrink to pay for this rediculous healthcare plan that Obama has proposed.
95% of all americans will have a severe (25-35%) tax increase. That is a fact and Obama admits it will happen.
7-15% of all americans will lose their homes because of the economy that Obama cannot fix because he is not capable of understanding the problems.
1 in 5 americans will lose their jobs as companies move from the US because Obama raises business taxes, forces healthcare initiatives and siezes pension plans.
Welcome to Obamageddon. Let''s look at the facts for a minute shall we?
1. Obama went to hawaii supposedly to see his grandmother. This was the lie. Truth is he flew to hawaii to have the democrat governor seal his birth records because he is a Kenyan (British) citizen by virtue of his fathers heritage. That is fact. He was never born in Hawaii the records were intentionally falsified and that has been proven.

The top 1% of wealthiest Americans now have a collective wealth of $19 Trillion dollars. The other three hundred million plus Americans have a collective wealth of $17 Trillion dollars. The top 1% saw an increase of income of 20% between 1946 and 1976. Between 1976 and 2006 the top 1% saw an increase of income of 232%! Those figures are a result of laws to favor the wealthy, tax loop holes, tax benefits for companies that move to foreign countries in order to increase profits because of low wages and no environmental controls---the table has been tilted to favor the wealthy. John McCain says that we should continue that policy. Since 1968 six of nine pres terms went republican. Since the republicans have dominated the political scene, 95% of Americans have now seen a decrease in income while at the same time the top 1% saw that 232% increase in income. Our jobs, homes and health insurance are gone. This is what the republican party has wrought. They have mesmerized us into making themselves and their wealthy friends ever richer while the rest of the country founders. THEY CAN''''''''T DO IT TO US IF WE DON''''''''T VOTE FOR THEM. THEY HAVE LEFT A GIGANTIC MESS. BARACK OBAMA WILL WORK TO CORRECT THE PROBLEMS, BUT WE MUST GIVE HIM THE TOOLS HE NEEDS TO DO THE JOB. VOTE FOR DEMOCRATIC SENATORS AND CONGRESSMEN. The balance has been lost and the pendulum must swing back the other way if we are to restore our economy.

Agree with Barack or not, she raised a a decent, hardworking family man that will make a great President that all of American can be proud of.

Bill O''Reilly even said last week that he though Barack was more forthcoming in his campaign - letting everyone know in advance where he stands. That the American people today are likely (if we all get out to vote) to elect this man to be our president, that is the will the people. That is the man we want to be the presiding officer of our government. I am glad Barack was willing to put his hat on the table like he did and run.
