Where They Stand
The CBS Evening News provides an in-depth look at the issues facing the 44th president.
"I will not be a perfect president," Obama said in the commercial. "But I can promise you this - I will always tell you what I think and where I stand."
Aides described the unusual ad as a final summation of Obama's campaign. They put the total cost at roughly $4 million, enough to show it simultaneously on CBS, NBC and Fox. It also was running on BET, Univision, MSNBC and TV One.
In the spot, Obama asked voters to "choose hope over fear and unity over division" in Tuesday's election. Republican John McCain derided the event as a "gauzy, feel-good commercial" paid for with broken promises.
Across 30 minutes, the ad blended views of Obama speaking in a setting that resembled the Oval Office, at the Democratic National Convention and elsewhere. It also included scenes of Americans discussing their economic and health care troubles and testimonials to the Democratic presidential candidate by politicians and business executives.
“Ronald Reagan had ‘morning in America,’ but this 30-minute infomercial had the feel of ‘mid-morning in America,’ said CBSNews.com senior political editor Vaughn Ververs. “Obama’s message of change and hope is a powerful one and the primary reason he is clear front-runner in this election. As the examples his campaign chose to highlight in their made-for-Hollywood ad illustrated, however, the message runs up against a harsh reality. It will be up to voters to decide whether he can deliver on the promises."
The ad showed Obama's wife, Michelle, and his two daughters as well as past photos of his black father from Kenya and white mother from Kansas.
The program ended with a live transmission of Obama speaking at a campaign rally in Florida, one of several states where Obama is trying to capture traditionally Republican territory.
"we will win this election," he promised. "The time for change has come."
Without the money to match the commercial, McCain sniped at the man and the moment.
"He's got a few things he wants to sell you: He's offering government-run health care ... an energy plan guaranteed to work without drilling ... and an automatic wealth spreader that folds neatly and fits under any bed," McCain said during a campaign stop in Florida.
McCain also criticized Obama for having signed a pledge to accept federal funds for the fall campaign and then breaking his word.
By opting out of the public financing, Obama was free to raise unheard of millions for the final weeks of the race, and afford costly events such as the television commercial.
After months of campaigning, Obama offered no new proposals in the ad. Instead, he stressed his plan to offer tax cuts to the middle class, "restore the long-term health of our economy and our middle class."
Obama said the nation's neglected problems predate President Bush, but that the economic crisis that erupted a few weeks ago was a "final verdict on eight years of failed policies."
Earlier, taping an appearance on the Daily Show for later in the evening, Obama said he had to reassure one of his daughters that the commercial would not pre-empt all programming.Read Wyatt Andrews' Reality Check On Obama's Campaign Pledges
"I was describing this to Michelle and my daughters, and Malia, who's 10, said, 'Hold up a second. Are you saying that my programs are going to be interrupted?' I said, 'No, we didn't buy on Disney.' So she was relieved."

See all 1199 CommentsHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! LOSER!!!!
You aren''t fit to shine his shoes.
It is a very effective presentation and provides detail about each of his intiatives.
A president who cares about the citizens of this nation will try to satisfy the majority. The majority of citizens in this nation are the kind of people who wil benefit from leadership under Barack Obama.
I will concede that some will never need benefit and others will not accept it from anyone who opposes their ideaology, and add these are a minority of the citizens in this nation.
Most who seek benefit from their government really want to be able to provide benefit for theirself and others.
Most who recieve benefit from government are not quitters and do reach their goals, and succeed in providing education and independance to their family and theirself.
A poor economy and expensive war benefits few.
...how is he gonna do all this again? specifics?
No one was left stranded on the bases. They all came home and scored!!!
Obama/Biden 2008
Crafty and slick with words, though.
Man this guy is big trouble.
And last but not least most people look to the goverment to protect us and run the business of goverment and keep out of our lives. I don''t know where you get the ideal that most who recieve benefit from the goverment reach their goals. Man it sure takes a long time some of these families have been in the welfare program for years not just one generation but many. Got a family I know who has had Grandad, Mom and Dad Children and now grandchildren all on welfare. Yeah they reach their goals sure. They will never as long as we are giving them a hand out. No need to. Wake up you must work for some DHS or ACORN group to think like this.

Senator Obama sealed the deal!
Now it''s up to the rest of us to get out and make it so!!
Thank you Senator Obama!!
OBAMA/BIDEN ''08
BO is for one thing, robbing from the rich and then giving it to the people who won''t, don''t work.
Maybe this man is different, someone who can restore our faith in government. For way too long there has been a cynical feeling that Washington doesn''t care about upholding the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. It cared only about power and keeping power and rewarding the big businesses that put them in power. All at the expense of the middle class.
Someone actually WORTHY of this great country''s most prestigeous job.
Dare we actually HOPE?
THIS MOVED ME TO TEARS. YOU HAVE MY VOTE.
There was no naming calling or slander in the presentation, just a simple honest man who is willing to work hard to help the middle class.
This is the man who is going to be President.
His message made Palin/McCain''s campaign a real perversion of a desperate cruel, selfish dirty old man!

Just like we are doing a blackout of all the bias news anchors that have not given any investigative information to the American public. Our little way of protesting Communist 3rd World media tactics - telling one side of a story. Where are you CBS, NBC, ABC with the truth about Rezko, Ayers, Kladihi, Wright, ACORN, and lie after lie Obama has told - the truth behind the Chicago district Obama represented as a state Senator - horrible conditions. Where is the media?

Compare that to the 90% intelliegent comments from an Obama supporter. Never in my life would you ever get me to believe America was so full of wackos.

Actually, none of the above...being rich is when you don''t know how many houses you own!
I think this is about the 20th conspiracy theory on this blog. It must be hard for the media to coordinate their opinions, after all they are all looking for ratings. They must have a hard time to determine who comes in 1st LMAO
I voted for Tony. Ten years later, with my country in a mess and my pocket fleeced, I can honestly say I will never vote for a socialist again.
I hope you have better luck America.
