"Actually, this is a J. Crew ensemble," the wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama told comedian Jay Leno on Monday on his talk show. She wore a yellow sweater, skirt and blouse ensemble.

"You can get some good stuff online," she added.

Questioned by Leno, the potential first lady declined to criticize GOP vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin about revelations that the Republican National Committee spent $150,000 at Neiman Marcus and other high-end retailers on clothes and accessories for Palin and her family.

Obama said she and her husband have a policy of spending their own money on their clothes. But she said she wanted to be "empathetic."

"A V.P. pick, it's like being shot out of a cannon. All of a sudden you're at the center of attention, and you want to look good," said Michelle Obama, adding she has never met Palin. "You're living in your home, minding your business, and all of a sudden you're on the national stage and everyone's watching."

Leno asked about Barack Obama's ailing grandmother. Obama recently left the campaign trail to spend time in Hawaii with his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who virtually raised him and is his main remaining family.

"She's doing OK, up and down. But we are just grateful that he took time off and went to see her," Michelle Obama said. She said her husband credited his grandmother, whom he calls "Toot," with teaching him strength.

She quoted him as saying: "'She's tough, she's been through a lot. She's still hanging on. If you wonder where I got my toughness, it's from Toot."'

She said neither of Obama's two young daughters is overly excited by the campaign.

Ten-year-old Malia's reaction to her father's plans to air a 30-minute paid advertisement on national TV Wednesday night?

"'You're going to be on all the TV? Are you going to interrupt my TV?"' her mother said Malia asked.

She said Barack Obama reassured his daughter that he hadn't bought time on the Disney Channel.

You are absolutely correct about Palin. She isn''t as transparent as McCain believed her to be. Suddenly they are discovering how many unethical dealings she has been involved with during her stints as mayor and governor. However, I do not agree with the eloquent part--you must admit she has stuck her foot in her own mouth countless times. How can someone who claims to be a Christian abuse her power and duped her own constituents the way she has. She is even doing her own "mavericky" thing without McCain. I''ll bet McCain is kicking himself right about now. Choosing your VP is the most important decision as a presidential candidate and he blew it.

"We now have a candidate that is not as transparent with a seemingly shady background, that comes across as being an extremely eloquent and charismatic speaker" weroinnewmexico

More neo-con BS! Obama was vetted, unlike your VP candidate. Even McCain has been telling crowds that Obama is a good guy.

I know that most Reps. are trailer living, gun toting trash that love Jesus while they smoke Meth, but man to dismiss a person because they are eloquent and intelligent....well even from one of your kind I am kind of stunned at the stupidity of the statement.

Yeah, lets get Joe Six Pack or Joe the Tax Evader (oop''s I mean plumber), or lets just get some drunk out of a bar that cracks us up with his stupid antics....BUT a guy who graduated from one of the ost prestigious schools in the world?.....that would be bad?

Brother you are an idiot.

KathySun,
My, my, everything you cited as Democratic, is exactly what the "Party of Lincoln" has been responsible for over the past 8 years. Have you been on the planet long or did you just land? Do you remember that when the Repubs took office 8 years ago
this country had a surplus and now there''s a multi-trillion dollar debt? We were relatively at peace then, now we are involved in two wars, both we started! You mention corruption? Did you witness that awful corrupted display put on as why we went to war in Iraq? One thing the Bush adminstration did not do was slap the face of the American people with 8 houses, 13 cars, $150,000 shopping sprees, and ethics violations against his choice. Bushs'' nor Cheneys'' familys charged back to the tax payers for living in their own homes, not to mention the alomost $55,000 in travel expenses!!!! Get one of the (500) news papers Palin says she reads and get up to date. Next Tuesday is going to be very sobering for this country regardless of who wins......

RE: Palin''s clothes. I understand the stress of being thrown onto the national stage, and how that stress could translate into doing as your handlers dictate and stepping into a $150,000 makeover. I just don''t understand why anyone would want someone a heart beat away from the presidency who has not yet developed the know how and strength of character to keep a pack of handlers at bay. We''ve had eight years of a presidency driven by "handlers." I''m ready for some capable, thoughtful, diligent homework doing leadership.

NEEDERMEIR.....Here you are again, spouting your useless drivel. Don''t you know that we are tired of you and see you as an uneducated troll who doesn''t have a clue as to what is going on? And why do you find it necessary to scream everything...take your finger off the caps key...we can hear you. By the way, I heard that the boys from Animal House were looking for you. Not sure what they wanted but they didn''t look very happy. Keep your eyes open as we wouldn''t want you to have any accidents. Just sayin....

achangenow-we''d love to stick to the topic but your media doesn''t cover so much of what is going on that we take the opportunity to speak our mind when we can WHILE we can. Like, here''s a for instance-Ma state senator diane wilkerson a DEMOCRAT was caught wit bribe money stuffed in her bra. Seems she has been under investigation for about 18 months. Now, she was probably going home to put the money in her freezer, ala, jefferson (D-LA). Is this covered here, NO. Why is that?? Well, one would think it''s because she''s a dem and black. See, there''s a pattern in your media that evidently you leemings don''t seem to mind. YOur media is not covering the news at all. YOu are being spoon fed and you leemings seem to like it that way. Most of us want to know all the news.
And, btw, why won''t the LA times release that tape??

fernandez-Oh, but he is treated as the messiah. As for his media, they are so in the tank for him they don''t even try to hide it anymore. As for smears, yea, being a lemming I guess you would think trying to find out the truth about him you call it "smear". Just why won''t the LA Times release that tape of the messiah at a function with a bunch of PLO types and "that guy from his neigborhood", why???" Just why was a citizen subjected to invasion of his privacy for asking him a question??? Why?? Why didn''t joe take the opportunity to stop the Marxist accusations of the messiah''s spread the wealth stand when questioned. Why?? Why is a station in Philadelphia blacklisted by the messiah campaign for asking questions??
This doesn''t bother you leemings at all???
Well, get ready for the brown shirts cause if any group are Nazi''s it''s your messiah and his followers.

Who got on Bloomberg TV back in July OF THIS YEAR assuring everyone that fannie and freddie were just fine??? Which party benefits from large donations from Wall Street??? Which party blocked any new regulations of fannie and freddie back in 2004??
Goldman/Sachs has donated exclusively to which party??"
Don''t believe me, look it up on factcheck.
Which party-DEMOCRAT.
And going back in history, which I know you libs hate, which party brought us the Community Reinvestiment Act of 1977 and 1994??

MICHELLE OBAMA HATES AMERICA.

Posted by NEEDERBAUR

"The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government", "and I won''t be buried under their d*a*m*n flag."

"I''m an Alaskan, not an American. I''ve got no use for America or her damned institutions."

Jo Vogel, Founder of AIP

Sarah Palin addressed the Alaskan Independence Party Convention a little over 6 months ago, happily telling its attendees that she shared its "vision of upholding the Constitution of our great state", curiously not mentioning the Constitution of the United States. She encouraged AIP to "keep up the good work".

Now, tell us again ... who hates America ???

---"Wife Says She Shops At J. Crew, Buys Online"---

That''s NOT what she said - Michelle Obama said the ensemble was from J. Crew and that you can get good stuff online.

Only stylists close sweaters with brooches - it seems to be their way of justifying their services to find other ways of closing sweaters than with the buttons they came with. Based on the absense of a personal narrative with regards to the clothes, you have to tend to think somebody''s buying clothes for Michelle the way somebody bought them for Sarah.

I don''t know what''s going on behind the scenes of camp McCain, but clearly camp Obama was better at foreseeing that women would want to know the details of Michelle''s outfits right from the get-go.

Who knows maybe the truth is that the reason Michelle''s stylist knew to dress her down was because gazillionaire Oprah told her women always want to know where to get clothes they see on tv. But in any case now that the perception has developed that Sarah ''went shopping'' for $6k suits, I think she did the right thing to say those clothes aren''t hers and that her earrings were made by her mother-in-law. I think it put the story to rest faster than if she hadn''t said anything at all and turned her back into the girl next door.

Ascension64 posted: "Call it bad luck if ya want, but it seems forces bigger than all of us want the Republicans out of office."

It''s not forces bigger than us. It is that the Republicans have been getting away with so much for so long that they have gotten sloppy. Originally years ago the Republicans had a sense of what is right and when they pulled something illegal - like the Oliver North contra issue - they would actually spend time and effort trying to cover it up. But then as they got away with more and more, they stopped bothering. The end was in sight when GB was elected and within 2 years was running a half-billion dollars in deficits and wasn''t even embarassed about it, just accepted it as normal, and expected everyone else to.
These days the Republicans trumpeting "Family Values" aren''t even ashamed enough to resign when caught trying to have gay *** in an airport bathroom, so how could there be possibly any other result than the house of cards coming crashing down all at once.

Why can''t some of you (Neederbaur) stick to the topic. What''s with all the hatred talk. That doesn''t help to solve our country''s problems. Obama has the better plan while McCain wants to continue with Bush''s failed policies. It''s not all that difficult to understand nor follow!

Stop the mindless stories about clothes and hair and cover the stories that matter to this campaign like Obama belonging to the "New Party" before the Supreme Court disbanded it,Obama supporting the "Employee Free cHoice Act" that would take away the secret ballot,Obama''s economic policy which would be bad for business, and Obama''s corrupt Chicago ties- http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122005063234084813.html-"Obama should come clean on Ayers,Rezko and the Iraqi Billionaire".

Michelle is a classy, confident, intelligent person who will make an exceptionally kind and considerate first lady ... and she will make a positive difference for America in the causes she takes on. Laura Bush was also very nice, but she married a dim-witted husband who surrounded himself with buffoons! Go Obama/Biden ... all the way to the White House.
