Reality Check
CBS News separates fact from fiction in what you're seeing and hearing about the presidential campaign.
Sen. John McCain campaigned across Ohio with Sarah Palin at his side Wednesday, drawing energized crowds of GOP partisans while his campaign dismissed the latest controversy over his running mate as coming from elitists and not representing the opinions of average Americans.
Appearing before a cheering throng of supporters at a high school football field near Akron, McCain and Palin reprised their criticism of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama as a big spender intent on raising taxes and redistributing wealth. But McCain reserved some of his sharpest rhetoric for a round of media interviews, telling radio talk show host Don Imus that he was "entertained by the elitist attitude" toward Palin and attributing criticism of his running mate to the fact that she was not part of the "Georgetown cocktail party" circuit.
"I think she's most qualified of any that has run recently for vice president, tell you the truth," McCain said, citing her experience as a small-town mayor and Alaska governor. He added: "Bill Clinton was pretty well derided when he came out of a small state to run for president of the United States," and he pronounced himself "amazed" at the criticism.
McCain's language underscored the frustration inside his campaign over the wave of negative publicity that has surrounded Palin in recent weeks. When she was first introduced to the country as his running mate in late August, Palin provided a jolt of energy to the campaign, helping McCain consolidate restive conservatives and pull even with Obama in the weeks after the GOP convention. Obama has since opened a lead in most surveys, including a lead of 11 points in the most recent Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll, released Wednesday.
But there is little sign that Palin has expanded her appeal beyond the GOP base, and she has been dogged by a steady of stream of politically damaging news, including the continuing investigation into her role in the firing of a state trooper in Alaska, her struggles in a series of network interviews and comments about "real America" that she later apologized for. The latest controversy involves a report that the Republican National Committee spent $150,000 on makeup consultations and clothes at high-end department stores such as Neiman Marcus and Saks in New York and St. Louis.
McCain aides dismissed the story, first reported by Politico, as of little significance in a period of financial and foreign crises. But some senior Republicans in Washington expressed concern that the disclosure could undercut her image as a "hockey mom" who can relate to ordinary citizens. "Voters are more worried about the economy," said McCain adviser Mark Salter, dismissing the suggestion that Palin had become a drag on the ticket. "She generates big crowds," he said. "She generates excitement everywhere she goes."
Palin has hardly been the only contributing factor in McCain's lagging fortunes. From the start of the general-election campaign, he has run against the headwinds of an ailing economy, an unpopular president of the same party, a GOP brand that is in disarray. Obama, meanwhile, has avoided major missteps and built significant financial and organizational advantages.
Where the selection of Palin was once seen as an asset, a majority of voters now say McCain's vice presidential pick reflects poorly on the decisions he would make as president, according to the Post-ABC News poll. Overall, 52 percent of likely voters said they are less confident in McCain's judgment because his of surprise selection of Palin; 38 percent are more confident because of it. That represents a marked reversal from the initially positive reaction to the pick.
Several GOP sources expressed anger about the damage the clothing story was likely to do to the ticket, coming just as the campaign is making its closing argument by employing "Joe the Plumber" in an appeal to average Americans. "That's what grates me. We're the party that talks about looking out for the little guy," said one top Virginia Republican, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly about the GOP ticket. "Then something like that pops. It smacks of being hypocritical."Ways To Win

Saul Anuzis, the chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, said Palin remains a popular figure, particularly with conservatives in his state. "She has still been a net plus for us," he said.
But he conceded that the national party spending $150,000 on clothes for her was a "dumb political decision" that was not likely to play well among many of his hardscrabble voters. "You're talking to a guy who wears Lands' End shirts," Anuzis said. "I don't even know how you would spend $150,000 on clothes. You can get a pretty darn good men's suit for $300 to $500."
Mike DuHaime, McCain's national political director, called Palin's addition the ticket "a shot of adrenaline to our entire base, and not just our conservative base," adding: "She can appeal to conservative Democrats, to working women, and she can certainly rally Republican voters."
The campaign has continued to deploy the Alaska governor in some of the most competitive areas of the country. "To have a popular, successful female governor who can draw big crowds and who's good on television -- it is good for our party to have a popular woman governor on the ticket," DuHaime said.
Another McCain adviser, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Palin continues to provide critical help in mobilizing Republican voters in GOP-leaning areas of battleground states that will be critical to determining the next president. By sending her to Florida's northern Panhandle, eastern North Carolina and Pennsylvania's "T" -- a region that includes Harrisburg, Wilkes-Barre and State College -- the campaign is helping boost voter turnout on Election Day, the aide said.
"In these regions, she has very strong numbers. We've also seen, because of daily tracking polls, she's had a positive impact," the adviser said. "In these states, we're not at the margins we need to be successful. And in all of these regions, when she's been campaigning, she's been helping."
Palin continues to inspire considerable fervor among Republican activists, who have flocked to her rallies in large numbers.
"I love her -- she's just like me," said Pam Moore, a minister who attended the rally in Green on Wednesday. Moore dismissed the latest reports of the RNC-funded shopping: "They are just trying to find dirt, and it's sad that people are stooping that low."
I think she's most qualified of any that has run recently for vice president, tell you the truth... Bill Clinton was pretty well derided when he came out of a small state to run for president of the United States.
John McCain"She's like one of us, just a normal, hardworking person, not someone from D.C. " said Ivan Capps, a Bureau of Land Management records manager who attended a Palin rally in Grand Junction, Colo.
But some of those interviewed expressed hesitancy about the pick. Barb Thomas, 67, a retired insurance administrator who lives near Harrisburg, Pa., said Palin is the only variable that could keep her from punching her ticket for McCain. "If something happened to McCain, I'm not sure she would be a good president," Thomas said. "That's one of the things that bothers me right now."
Eilperin was traveling with the Palin campaign. Staff writer Michael D. Shear and polling director Jon Cohen in Washington contributed to this report.

Frig it - tell me one other woman in history that has done that.
Your wonderful Hillary had to pick out a state where she thought she could win and actually move there. *** is that? She had never lived in New York - knew absolutely nothing about NY, had never held office, yet won in a landslide.
And why? The simple fact that she was a woman - that is all the Dems needed. That and only that. Show me one single qualification that Hillary Clinton had prior to winning in NY.
Idiots!
Ivan Capps proves to be a fine example of the quality Federal employee, Dizzy, uninformed, Lack of ability to perform the simplest task such as thinking and walking simultaneously.
RNC had to dress her and her family because she/they failed to meet V.P. Republican standards.
She has abused her power as governor in office. (Troopergate)
She has illegally charged the state of Alaska for her Children''s travel, lodging, and meals. They were no invited, Palin decided to take them.
And when ask what the responsibility of Vice President is. SHE HAD NO IDEA IN HELL WHAT IT IS.
Yea, No warm and fuzzy knowing McCain would put This idiot on the ticket...
Picking Palin was a huge blunder...McSame knows it!
Not getting elected will be his prize :P

Or, rather, to tell an outrageous and obvious lie because what else am I supposed to do? Admit she''s a moron? Admit it was a mistake? Admit she''s a boat anchor around my neck?

I wish I could''ve said that half as eloquently. I completely agree, and what''s sad is that we all know the answers. Any of these things flipped the other way would make this a completely different race. In fact, if any of McCain''s baggage came instead with Obama, he wouldn''t be the nominee. It''s sad to me that, in 2008, race is still so pervasive that the black candidate has to jump through 100 times the hoops the white candidate does. We can make sure this doesn''t work though. Go vote. If you can vote early, vote today. Go make sure it counts. Your vote is your voice. Obama/Biden 08!!

Good post! So I am not crazy after all?
besides buying clothes. If he knows ...
As for the stupidity of Palin as a VP pick, in the end, did it matter? McCain was in trouble no matter what. The bottom line is that this year the independents were going to break to the left; any choice that would have appealed to the middle would have alienated his conservative base. Palin appealed to the base and alienated the middle. That is a no-win scenario.
You might not understand, it''s because he''s BLUE !
Waste of money. Would have been better to bring her to Wal-Mart, they have plenty of "hockey mom" clothes there.

Definitively not her fault when you know she would do everything to get every girl pregnant. Alaska, one of the best states for rapists.
The only true Americans in this country are those gun and Bible carrying neocons living in RED states, attending McBush and Palin HATE rallies, listening to RNC "Robo" HATE phone calls, and voting for McBush!
China, Cuba, and Vietnam are still RED too, aren''t they????
SIG HEIL, I LIKE RED!!!, BUSH!!!
sig heil, ALL I SEE IS RED, ESPECIALLY WHEN I DEBATE OBAMA!!!, McBush!!!
sig heil, MY CHECKBOOK NEVER GOES IN THE RED!!!, Palin!!!

Anyone claiming that does not know much about political history. Hillary Rodham Clinton was an accomplished lawyer, active in politics, who put her career aside to support Bill. Hillary was the Democratic counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee. Her Republican counterpart was former Senator Fred Thompson, who was a powerful Republican attorney before becoming an actor. People think Thompson just jumped from acting to the Senate without realizing that he had been a behind-the-scenes power player in Tennessee politics before acting.
Hillary did not just ride Bill''s coattails.
And why? The simple fact that she was a woman - that is all the Dems needed. That and only that. Show me one single qualification that Hillary Clinton had prior to winning in NY.

No, you are not. What really gets me is the recent interview with Hillary where she says "I believe that you grow where you are planted" - as usual she takes her lies to an entirely new, never even approached before, level.
I guess Dems have no problem with Mexicans loading up in Tucson and trying to get that state blue? Let another country decide our elections now - great.

That is totalo 100% BS. Listen smarta_ss - just answer the question without your mumbe jumbo. Are you ready? Are you sitting down? You may need something other than you cut and paste standard answers, but it is not difficult.
Why did she move to NY to run? That is it - pure and simple.
I see the problem, you don''''t know what either word means, you old fool.
And as for the most experienced VP of any, that is just so ridiculous it is not worth commenting.

Ummm...graduated with honors from Wellsley College. On the Board of Editors for the Yale Law Review. Interned and worked at the Children''s Defense Fund. Served on the Nixon impeachment inquiry staff advising the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives. On the faculty at U of A Law School. Best-selling author.
Compare that to Palin''s qualifications. Palin was elected Governor because Alaskan''s were fed up with corruption in their state politics. She was in the right place at the right time, and wasn''t beholden to either political machine. She continues to prove beyond any doubt that her lack of academic achievements as a college student were no anomaly. After this, she can go back to Alaska and the relative anonymity which she so richly deserves.
And as for the most experienced VP of any, that is just so ridiculous it is not worth commenting.

And Hillary was his ............. wife.
If you were John McCain would you have picked Palin?
I still think that John McCain would win easily if he picked Romney as VP. Romney would have put the North East in play, while McCain got most of the southern states.
how bout another big double thumbs up too.

Because I am not influenced by the Katie Couric news hour. I know how they can manipulate. They ask trick question after trick question until the person begins to anticipate trick questions. Then they ask a very seemingly innocent, easy question. When the person pauses (wondering *** this is leading to) then they air that "pause" itself. And you sheep buy it.
You might not agree with Newt, but it is obvious that he ahs the ability to see the whole picture. He is right there, in person, and he endorses her big-time. Unless now it is Newt that doesnt know history, or the constitution, or leadership. Dont sit there and ask incredulously how anyone can support her - it is your own inability to filter through the truth.

Only by ONE highly flawed poll that, as I understand it, 25% of those questioned in the poll were evangelicals. Hardly a balanced sampling. There is no other poll that shows the race this close. Many more have Obama pulling away.
thats the buzz on the street. his real choices all said uhhhhh yeah i''ll get back to ya, no-one wanted to ruin thier political futures on johns crazy ride down. adds a lot of reality as to why he had to settle on the snake handler.

These are all increasing too. And I don''t think the recent news about Palin (her not understanding the role of the VP and $150,000 on clothes) is going to help much.
This election is over, Obama won already.

Those numbers look good, but I don''t they''re that accurate. They''re too good in fact. Although I''m pretty certain Obama is ahead in all of those states.
Personally, I know 1 person who is voting for McCain. 80% are for Obama, and the rest independant.
