Sen. Barack Obama campaigns for the presidency.

  • Photo Essay McCain Campaigns

Arizona Sen. John McCain crisscrosses the U.S. in search of votes.

(CBS)  In November, Americans decide whether Barack Obama or John McCain becomes the 44th President of the United States. In the series "Presidential Questions," CBS News anchor Katie Couric asks questions that move the candidates well beyond the usual sound-bites. Some questions concern policy. Others are more personal. All will give you a better sense of who these men are - and what has shaped them. What follows is Couric's question - and the candidates' full answers.

Katie Couric: When was the last time you cried and why?

Barack Obama: This one is actually easy. It was Malia, my 10-year-old daughter's, birthday party.

We were in Montana. And you know, she's a Fourth of July baby. So often times, during this campaign, we'd be traveling during birthdays. And so we were in this small hotel, I think a Holiday Inn, and we had this big public thing.

The staff organized for a smaller family party. And we were in this little, non-descript conference room, with Malia and Sasha, Michelle, me, my sister, my brother-in-law and my niece. And there was a cake. And there was some food, which wasn't, you know, stellar. And the staff had put together an iPod of all of her favorite music: The Jonas Brothers and Beyonce. And we just spent the evening just dancing. And we were all dancing to their favorite songs. And they were laughing because, you know, obviously their daddy's dancing is ridiculous. And Malia came up and said, "This is the best birthday I've ever had."

And she meant it. And I looked at her and I realized, you know, that she was growing up. And that she was wise, and turning out to be somebody who would say that to her Dad even if she didn't mean it, just to make me feel good.

And yeah, it chokes me up right now talking about it. Yeah, my kids can get to me every time.

John McCain: I cry regularly.

Couric: You do?

McCain: Aw, yeah. You know, I'm very sentimental. When I see these young people who are serving. I met a woman at a town hall meeting the other day who had lost her son in Iraq. And, I was so touched, because she talked about how proud she was of his service.

And what a fine young person he was. And whenever you have that experience, obviously you think, how could I ever - how could I cope with such a tragedy, you know? And so you know, when I say cry, I get - my eyes well up, as they are right now thinking about these brave Americans and their families who have sacrificed so much for their country, especially recently.

The last time Obama cried was when Joe "big mouth" Biden nearly spilled all the beans about Obama''s BIG WAR/mandatory draft plans.
"He (Joe Biden)then talked about the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
"It''s where al Qaeda lives. It''s there. It''s real. We focus so much on the bad policy on Iraq, we sometimes seem to think that somehow there isn''t a real problem. Our CIA has pointed out that bin Laden is alive and well, Iraq, excuse me, in the mountains between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He''s getting (inaudible) and support from those tribal areas. You have, folks, the Taliban is coming back. We''re on the verge of finding ourselves in a position to see the regression occurring in Pakistan."
The transcript;

The mandatory draft/service plan, Obama aka Barry Soetoro already tried to push through in 2007; House Bill 393 (read the details) which was voted down and did not reach the Senate where he and Hillary Clinton supported it.
Obama''s own plans for WAR on his Democratic National Committee website;

Anti-christ shmanti-christ. When did the Republican Party change their name to the American Theocracy Party? Good Lord. This, albeitly stupid, article was about what made them cry, not the second coming of Christ.

So did she mean it or didn''t she mean it? If she didn''t mean it...well it''s all ok that she lies as long as she makes daddy feel all warm and fuzzy. She''s on her way to being a great politician!

I would like to see some proof that Barack is indeed a US citizen. I don''''t believe he is - that is one of the reasons I am voting for McCain.

I can''t believe that people aren''t embarrassed to thinks as stupid as this!

Really, the man is a United States Senator running for POTUS--do you honestly think he hasn''t been vetted?

You sound like a bunch of half-wits and tinfoil-hatted conspiracy theorists.

Actually, the story about background checks was about Sarah and Todd Palin. The report said that their association with the Alaska Independence Party (An Anti-American Hate Group) would likely prevent them from getting any sort of government position.

Good news for Americans who don''t appreciate a Militia Group selling hatred of the country, the flag and any American who doesn''t live in Alaska.

McCain crying over a soldier? Hmmm...Even though the veterans give him a failing grade for refusing to fund the troops and refusing to sign the G.I. bill? Sounds like guilt tears or plain old crocodile tears, McCain. If you really loved the troops like you keep saying, you''d want them to have the best equiptment and protection money could buy. But instead, you want to help all the corrupt and filthy rich corporate types. You care more about their ''problems'' than you''ve EVER shown the troops in your 26 yr. bogus ''career''.

Vote for McCain if you don''t care about the troops and vote Palin if you hate the rest of America (besides Alaska, of course)

This is one of the dumbest questions Couric has ever asked! Let''''s focus on issues instead of this touchy feelly BS!

mrcrosby12, what exactly do you base your information on. What makes you believe Senator Obama wasn''t born in the United States?

You have no idea what you''re talking about.

What kind of a question is that...could only come from a female reporter...geez why don''t you ask Obama about supporting Odinga and his socialistic agenda for health care, and education...why didn''t you ask, when was the last time you told a lie on the campaign....Obama would have laughed and reached out and touched your knee and said "Now Katie, we all tell while lies all the time" and you would have said..."What an intellectual and responsible answer"....or why didn''t you ask when the last time they had a colonoscopy....no wonder FOX has a higher rating with more viewers.

Because of his background and questionable past associations, if Obama were not running for President and was applying for a high security government job I sincerely doubt that he could pass a routine security examination. The FBI would regard him as a security risk. Ordinary US citizens applying for security positions are highly scrutinized and can pass such rigorous checks. No doubt that Obama will be elected in November - - once he assumes office he inherits access to our nation''s most closely held secrets - - I''m voting for McCain.

Yet, as we shall see, there have been in the past%u2014and are now%u2014many Antichrists! And underlying all of their deceptions is the "spirit of Antichrist"%u2014the wrong approaches and false doctrines which have blinded billions of human beings from understanding God%u2019s Truth. The "doctrine" of Antichrist is not understood by most of the world%u2019s religious leaders.
"How so?" you might ask.
Because there is a very real Satan the Devil. Jesus Christ twice called him the "ruler of this world" (John 12:31; 14:30). Satan is the great deceiver. The Apostle John made it very clear that Satan deceives the vast majority of mankind: "So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him" (Revelation 12:9).

"But I am not deceived!" you might say.
Do not be too sure!

Maura,

Are you serious? Sen Obama''s birth certificate from Hawaii has been researched and tested for authenticity more than any other candidate in history. McCain was born in Panama but no one questions HIS birthright.
