Dead Bear With Obama Signs Left At School

75-Pound Cub Shot To Death And Dumped In Front Of N.C. College Building

(AP)  Police at Western Carolina University and wildlife officials are investigating the discovery of a dead bear cub draped with a pair of Barack Obama campaign signs.

Leila Tvedt, associate vice chancellor for public relations, said that maintenance workers found the 75-pound bear cub shot to death in front of the school's administration building at the entrance to campus early Monday.

The Obama yard signs were stapled together and placed over the bear's head, Tvedt said.

The bear had been shot in the head, Tvedt said.

"Western Carolina University deplores the inappropriate behavior that has led to this troubling incident," Tvedt said. "We cannot speculate on the motives of the people involved nor who those people might be. Campus police are cooperating fully with authorities to investigate this matter."

University police called in state Wildlife Resources officials to remove the body and help in the investigation.

Bear hunting season is under way in western North Carolina.

I go to WCU. and I find most of these comments insulting. You all act like everyone in western North Carolina is a complete idiot. This was a prank by college students. It is being blown out of proportion by many of you and by the media. You are far more "brutish" than anyone at this school.

That act was committed by brainless brutes, that''s all. Neither the Republicans, nor the Democrats are collectively responsible for those pathetic morons.

I''m not familiar with the mores of western NC , but if this was in the NorthEast I''d expect and I''d put some money on this being a democratic dirty trick !!

The selective outrage of liberals is amazing

IF

If the signs on the bear had said "Bush, Palin, or McCain"
the same "outraged" liberals on this forum
would instead be praising the WCU students,
and would be demanding the rest of us
to respect their "free-speech" rights

Seems Republicans have learned dirty tricks from the Democrats.

In 2004, Democrats in North Carolina, were caught
firebombing the Republican headquarters
in Raleigh, NC with molotov cocktails

Also, in 2004, young Democrats were caught slashing tires
of Republican transport vans in Wisconsin

Ironic how liberals get mad when conservatives act like liberals

I believe this act was committed on behalf of the john mccain/sarah palin campaign. It is exactly the type of thing they would pay for in order to make a point..

This is just the kind of scum that would be against Obama, and precisely why many of us are supporting him. If these creeps that would shoot a bear cub for some political statement are not for Obama, then I think that is all that needs to be said.

DaVicar1: do you like the fact an innocent ANIMAL was sluaghtered to make a dumb political statement for someone (obviously on your side) or do you just not care? ----------------------------------------

kc629: "your side"...now come on....do you really think a sick-o that would do this, did so because he is such a strong supporter of republican/conservative values. No,.. he probably could not recognize a republican 1 out of 10 times....he wasn''t thinking about supporting McCain...he''s undoubtedly a racist...and thought he was making some stupid statement.

Yes we are a sick society!! But those of you who are so quick to blame the republicans%u2026.use your head...the sick person who did this didn''t do it because of something McCain said...they did it because of some sick hatred of Obama....a wise old friend of mine told me years ago that society can protect itself from most anything....BUT an idiot. And unfortunately, there are some sick, sick idiots out there.

Grammar check. This sentence makes it seem like the bear was shot while in front of the administration building. If this were the case, was it campaigning for Obama, or stealing Obama signs from supporters'' yards?

Once again the fringe element is trying its best to ruin the campaign of its chosen candidate. I''''''''m not a McCain supporter but I don''''''''t believe he condones this type of behavior and I don''''''''t believe he appreciates it.

Yes, but unfortunately McCain and Palin opened Pandora''''s Box and are unable to shut it again. Calling opponents terrorists and other horrible things stirs up ignorance and fear. And THAT brings out the evil side of people.

I just hate to sink to this level. I hate it that it''s called a "redneck" thing or a "North Carolina" thing when, in fact, it''s just a "thing" that some sick individual or individuals did. There are lots of good people in North Carolina, including rednecks. And not all rednecks are Republicans.
