Fla. Church Burns Porn Found At Drive-In

Congregation Holds Service To Torch A Hundred Adult Films Found On Recently-Purchased Property

(CBS/AP)  Members of a Jacksonville church gathered to burn at least 100 reels of X-rated movies from the '70s and '80s that were discovered recently when the church bought an old drive-in theater.

The 300-member congregation of Christ Church Anglican held a special service Sunday afternoon, which included a ceremonial burning and a "holy hose-down" with water from a Jacksonville Fire and Rescue truck blessed by the priest.

Christ Church purchased the 13-acre Playtime Drive-In for $1.4 million after the 60-year-old theater closed in May.

The church closed on the deal a few weeks ago and discovered the porn stash among piles of rusted film cans when they began cleaning up.

Some films were hidden in walls and above the concession stand, as reported by the Jacksonville Times-Union.

The outdoor screen unspooled pornography in the 1970s and '80s before changing to mainstream fare in the '90s.

The Rev. Mark Eldredge said the church plans to show family movies to the public after some repairs are done.

As a church member and attendee at the event, let me clarify some points. First, we did not acutally burn 100 films. We burned about a half-reel of ONE movie, titled "Unholy." It was purely symbolic and part of the overall ceremony to reclaim the land for the Lord. And we had an OK from the city. Second, the films were definitely old porn, with titles like "Kinky Business" and "Private Teacher." Third, I''m sure we paid for the fire truck to be there - and there was no public danger in that. If they''d gotten a call, they''d have left. Lastly, we have no problem with se/. It''s God''s creation. He means for us to enjoy it, just within the bounds of marriage.

They will show movies and not charge a "donation". Take away all tax exemptions now.

There was probably a copy of Gone With The Wind in that pile of rusted film canisters. I can think of several cases where a church bought property that included an historic structure and destroyed it just to put in a parking lot. The church has no regard for posterity or history. As far as the trip-x film, yes, they could have added an additional wing to their congregation if sold to the highest bidder and done in a way not to attract attention and still save face.

Why in the world would they burn classic porn?!? If they were going to burn anything, they should have burned ''On Golden Pond'' and done EVERYONE a favor.

They should have sold them on eBay. They might have received enough to fund a program to that would have helped their poor or elderly parishioners.

Or they may have already checked them out a found them damaged and worthless and determined that a good old fashioned book (errr I mean film) burning is good PR.

theres pornography in florida? no way.

old 70s porn, hairy jungle beavs and all. too bad, they should have taken it to the antique road show to find out its value.

its amazing how churches, doesnt matter what denomination, are the biggest grandstanders of this kind of thing, and always get caught as the worst offenders... must be the repressed psychology. why do people keep givin em money??

This type of chuch considers old porn films to be a trophy and actually knew they were there upon making the purchase. The pastor obviously lives in the distant past and has failed to upgrade and modernize.

I can''t even see why such a event is even newsworthy and the fact that this church actually spent 1.4 million dollars for the property, tells me they haven''t learned how to make better uses for their money. If they get a thrill from finding old vintage porn to burn, more power to them. I often wonder whether pastors exhibiting this bizarre behavior aren''t just returning to the scene of their own personal pastimes and wanted to try to do something symbolical to atone.

It''s their property. They may do whatever they want with it.

They probably burned the reels because time and technology rendered them useless. So they have this big show of piety and then probably go home and rustle up somtehing nasty on the internet. A spectacle, indeed, but not a convincing one.

The liberal is going to show disrespect for anyone that doesn''t hold his view. While no one on these posts is denying the liberals right to view porn in his own home, they are easily disrespecting the right for a church to do what they feel is appropriate with the film that they found on their property. Liberals think that their views are the only views that count. How hypocritical. How pathetic. How Un-American.

But that''s history!

Now we won''t be able to see more of Ron Jeremy''s mustache!

And it''s from the 1970s and 80s -- back when pornos at least had some cheesy movie plot in them. Today''s porn is solely "Wham, bam, thank ya ma''am, and now go get tested for cooties."
