I let the kids pick their costumes online since the selection is generally better and I don''t like to deal with the crowds. I highly recommend it, especially the site I used called Sortprice:

My son usually picked his own costume. My favorite was when he at age 12, decided at the last minute to go trick or treating with his friends. He grabbed the aluminum foil and wrapped himself up, head to toe. He told everyone he was a "Left over". He got the most candy of his friends that year.
