Not Only Triplets -- Identical Triplets!

Odds Of Suburban New York City Couple's New Offspring Put At One-In-Million, Even One-In-200-Million

Julie Chen spoke with the Lyons family about their three new additions. The New York couple is the proud parents of identical triplets, a one-in-a-million birth.

(CBS)  The stork brought Kerry and Desmond Lyons a very, very, very rare delivery Friday -- triplets -- in fact -- identical triplets!

First came Kevin Patrick, who weighed in at 6 pounds Friday, then Declan Gerard, who was five pounds, eight ounces, and finally Cormac Francis, who tipped the scales at five pounds, four ounces.

Kerry says she and the three new bundles of joy are doing well.

The proud parents chatted with co-anchor Julie Chen on The Early Show Tuesday, along with Kerry's doctor, Robin Kalish, of New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan.

Also on hand were the Lyons' two other children, Liam, three, and Ciara, who just turned two.

The triplets were delivered via C-section. The pregnancy wasn't assisted by fertility treatments.

Kalish says the odds of such births are one-in-a-million, and some experts put them as high as one-in-200-million.

The Lyons say they'll need a bigger home than the one they now own in Irvington, N.Y., in Westchester County, immediately north of the city. They'll also need a bigger car.

Perhaps a more immediate problem: How can Kerry and Desmond tell the triplets apart?!

Perhaps a different-colored nail polish on their pinkies, Kerry said. Different tattoos on each, Desmond suggested. "I think that might be a little aggressive for newborns," Kerry remarked. "But, it is a trick. I'll tell you that much already!"

"We just feel lucky and blessed that we have these three amazing little babies, and they're healthy and, frankly, kinda cute, to boot, which we weren't expedcting!"

Desmond said that, when he learned at the eight-week mark of Kerry's pregnancy that triplets were on the way, his reaction was "just one word: Wow!' And we're very fortunate that we're here, with these beautiful, healthy babies."

Kalish explained that multi-fetal pregnancies all carry greater risks than regular ones "of almost every complication ... everything from diabetes, to high blood pressure, and, especially, pre-term labor. But luckily, Kerry did great, and really beat all the odds, from getting pregnant with identical triplets, to going to almost 36 weeks."

My sister just found out she is expecting identical triplet girls, which were conceived naturally without the help of fertility treatments. She is due in June 2009. These will be her first children, and she and our entire family feel very blessed and excited to share this miracle with her. Congratulations to the Lyon's Family!

Congrats on your beautiful triplets!! We have fraternal twin 7mo girls plus 3 boys already!! The girls were a Surprise altogether... twins don''t run in our family and we did NOT use fertility drugs. I prayed and prayed for a girl with my 3rd and got blessed with twin girls in our surprise pregnancy #4!!! Our 3rd was only 17 months when they were born and I was worried about that but we made it so so can YOU!!! You can do it! God answers prayer in ways we don''t expect. And He will for you too. He certainly blessed us with great family, friends and neighbors who really have helped us out this last year!!
Get ready for the "you''ve got your hands full" comments. We get them nonstop!! It can be very annoying at times, especially at first. But come up with some good positive responses to give in return.
You will be amazed at how God provides when we are in need. May God continue to bless your family always, Jennifer

I have identical triplets boys. They are now 8 years old. Its funny how people have alot of negative things to say. I have the boys and 3 other children. I would never ask for it any different. Just stay organized and on a schedule. It all works out. We make it work in a small house and small car. I never got donations and put on TV. We just make it work. Just like everyone does if you had a single child. It doesn''t make you a bad person because you happen to have 3 babies at once and didn''t use fertility. It''s just a blessing. Please don''t say negative things. Its not "Poor Mom". Its good for you and you will be the happiest person with all the love they give you. It is FUN!
The main thing I worry about is college. We will never be able to afford it. My boys are really good in school and straight A''s. We just never luck out like that. They just work hard they know how important school is. We are all blessed with what God gives you.
