"The Great Schlep" For Obama

Sarah Silverman Video Is Part Of Effort To Get Young Jews To Go To Fla. To Persuade Their Grandparents To Vote For Him

(CBS)  We've all seen how every vote counts in presidential elections -- particularly in Florida.

Now, a group called the Jewish Council for Education and Research is behind The Great Schlep, which encourages young Jews to go to Florida to nudge their grandparents to vote for Barack Obama for president.

And, as Early Show weather anchor and features reporter Dave Price explains, comedian Sarah Silverman made a video featured in the movement, and on its Web site.

Price spoke with some "great schleppers" -- and their grandparents -- to see how it's going in their cases. In one particular case, a schlepper pulled out all the stops!

These Hollywood types really get me. What on this planet makes you think your opinion rises above others opinions? Before television was invented, what would your jobs even be? You are in comedy, so I guess the Court Jester would be you. And now the Court Jester wants to tell others how to vote?

I am going to vote for Obama cause Sarah Silverman said it was a good idea. Get a grip honey, you wouldn''t be bad with a few pounds off, but that comedy routine of yours isn''t all that. Work on that and leave decisions to each person making them.

It''s not just Obama, it''s the entire Democratic Party. For some reason that I do not understand, they seem intent on "everything global". Our borders flood people (voters) in, and our taxes are supposed to support this entire planet (they already almost do that, in fact). Are all these new "citizens" going to be expected for future votes? Well, here''s a news flash; A lot of them do not see any good with the Democrats. They see how things have turned out for blacks by the Democrat Party considering the black vote to be automatic.

The people who most want the borders closed to tomorrows immigrants, are todays immigrants: they''re competing for the same jobs. But, which Republican factory or farm owner wants to cut himself off from a lifetime supply of cheap labor? Follow the money and you''ll see why: Democrats love the immigrant, hate the immigration. Republicans are the opposite.

The "great schlep" bothers me on so many levels. It particularly bothers me that this could also be called the "great manipulation of elder adults" This is a vulnerable population to begin with and to think you would attempt to persuade by manipulation your grandparents smacks as a lack of respect for them and their ability to make their own decisions. I think they have lived enough years to base their decisions on their own belief system and not be manipulated into voting the way someone else would like for them to vote. Coercion even if it is disguised as funny is really not a fun place to be in, if you are the one being coerced.

McCain and Obama.

What is left? Well I suppose we can look at the history of what happens when one party has full control of government, something the writers of the Constitution tried to prevent. We can look at the reasoning of giving even more power to the Democartic Party who has failed to deliever on the mandate given two years ago and who now has the an approval rating worse than Bush.

Or I suppose we can celebrate the new Socialist America where dissent is suppressed, and opposing views are all racist. Where business is nationalized, and government takes on the role of your mother, providing all that you need (at least that is what the Democrats will tell you).

This is not the America of my dreams or of my forefathers, is it yours ?

The Great Schlep is insulting.

It shows a willingness to think that one''s grandparents either value their vote so little that they will obediently vote as their grandchild tells them to vote or that their grandkids think they are no longer mentally stable enough to resist their grandchild''s please and/or persuasions.

Pretty ugly when you think about it.

Or they are just trying to get their grandparents to vote for the candidate that is best for the grandchild''s future.

So what is it with American Jews, who feel so smug in this land of opportunity, that they seem to have forgotten what the Israeli National Mantra used to be; "Never Again".

And here we have generations of Jewish people who have no connection with Israel, our only democratic ally in the middle east; and they think that the man that Moammar Khadafi called our black Kenyan American muslim brother, who will change the world.

Well maybe ordinary Americans ought to take up that same chant, "Never again !"

I may be a jew living in Europe, but I''m still an American. I don''t need any grandkids to convince me to vote for Obama, his policies and personality will suffice for me.

We know republicans lack respect, we''ve gotten used to this. But newsflash Republican America, Europe thinks of you as medieval zealous idiots who wouldn''t even know how to find any other country but USA on a map.

The world is exceeding USA, and that self-destructive path the republicans set out for us will not change unless a great person such as Obama becomes president.

Go Sarah (Silverman)!

Expose the racist, anti-semitic, xenophobic, fascist GOP for what it really is.

The current Republican party is obviously no different than Adolph Hitler''s Nazi "Brown Shirts" that set in motion the events that resulted in the Holocaust. The GOP preaches racial hatred and religious intolerance, and encourages class warfare; they are fear-mongers and book-burners.

Expose the ignorant haters for what they really are!

Btw, part of Obama''s tax plan is to eliminate income tax for seniors that earn less than $70,000 per year.

Just wanted to congratulate you on the single most naive, stupid post I have ever read on any forum anywhere. Or you are flat out lying to push the same old Democrat agenda. Immigrants are against other immigrants because they are competing for the same jobs? Did you actually type that with a straight face?

It''s really quite amusing to see all the Repugs here frantically posting their never-ending racist, fear-mongering drivel. They''re obviously all deep in panic mode now.

The Democrats (wisely) seldom even bother to respond to the Republican silliness anymore; they are sitting back comfortably watching the show, knowing these GOP rants are all going end in a few more weeks, when Obama wins.

Let them rant away - it all just helps Obama.

It''s a meme that has taken hold for months now: Obama supporters behave as though they belong to a cult. It''''s been reported in the media, and most of us who have not imbibed of the Obama Kool-aid have probably noticed tell-tale signs among our affected friends and family.

Of course, the average Obamabot would be the last to admit this phenomenon, and some take great offense at the term. Most consider themselves too intellectually advanced to succumb to such tactics as those employed by cult-leaders.

According to Wikipedia, the psychological definition of a cult has five characteristics. They are:

People are put in physically or emotionally distressing situations
Their problems are reduced to one simple explanation, which is repeatedly emphasized
They receive unconditional love, acceptance, and attention from a charismatic leader
They get a new identity based on the group
They are subject to entrapment (isolation from friends, relatives, and the mainstream culture) and their access to information is severely controlled

I am in SHOCK that a "Movie star" as well as CBS is endorsing seeing your grandparents just to get a vote. Are the family values for Obama followers this frivolous?? Are our grandparents only good for a vote.....IF they are voting for Obama??? IS this NOT ridiculous??? Is it me? I am disgusted and appalled that CBS LAUGHS at such a video.... Have the Jewish people not been through enough?????

I totally agree with you amerz. This "Schlep" campaign is disgraceful. How degrading is this to family values and morals? What else will the Obama campaign resort to in order to get votes? Isn''t voter fraud through ACORN enough? I can''t believe that there are actually people that are backing this ad AND are Jewish. Visit your grandparents, but only if they are voting for Obama? How sad is that? We should visit our family because we love them and they mean something to us, not for just a sorry A$$ vote!!!!!!!

MaryKaye23- It''s called xanex honey. I don''t know if it helps with the foaming at the mouth insane rage that you Palin Pushers suffer from, but perhaps it can help you cope better with reality.

amerzy77- You know who Sarah Silverman is right? She''s a comedian who is WELL KNOWN for her dark and twisted humor. She''s brilliant. Check her out. Maybe that will help you feel a little less SHOCKED by her video. Also, grandparents aren''t just good for a vote. They''re really good at sending holiday cards with money in it. Oh, and rambling on about stories that make no sense and getting confused. Much like MaryKaye23. Well minus all the rage and stupid anyway.

I AM in fact, aware of how she is, but thanks for the great insight. The principal of the video is what I am in SHOCK about. But then again, its people like you that only use grandparents for money and a vote.... Clearly, a lot of time was taken to instill GREAT values in your home. Hence, the person you are giving your vote to....

Actually my grandparents haven''t voted or sent cards in years. Being dead takes up too much of their time these days.

However when they were alive, my grandparents and parents were kind enough to teach their children and grandchildren the benefit of a healthy sense of humor and independent thought. I guess they forgot to instill unrealistic fear and a gullible need to follow, worship and vote for anyone who says the word terrorist, no matter how stupid or insane they are, like the high moral parents and grandparents that raised you. You must have had a really superior upbringing to not only be voting for McCain/Palin but also have such a keen sense of knowledge into the lives, thoughts, actions and upbringing of everyone who disagrees with you.

So, did your grandparents buy you that high horse for your birthday or do they give those out at Palin Rallies now?
