Alaska's youngest and first female governor tabbed to be McCain's running mate.

(CBS/ AP)  Alaska lawmakers met behind closed doors Friday to discuss a politically charged ethics report into Gov. Sarah Palin's firing of her state public safety commissioner.

The Republican vice presidential nominee has been accused of firing a state commissioner to settle a family dispute. But the report, to be released Friday afternoon, is also expected to touch on whether Palin's husband meddled in state affairs and whether her administration inappropriately accessed employee medical records.

Sensitive to accusations of political bias, lawmakers ordered the report be held under the utmost secrecy. Members of a legislative committee were forced to sign a confidentiality agreement before reading it, and each page contained a special watermark and a unique number to trace it if it was leaked.

The inquiry, approved by a bipartisan vote, began before Republican presidential nominee John McCain named Palin his running mate.

Since then, however, the case has been dogged by accusations of political influence, particularly after the Democrat overseeing the case, Sen. Hollis French, predicted an "October surprise" for the McCain campaign.

As lawmakers filed into a meeting room in downtown Anchorage, they were greeted by Palin supporters wearing red clown noses and carrying balloons, cheering that the circus was in town.

Despite all the controversy surrounding McCain's running mate, CBS News chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer said the scandal pales in comparison with the economic crisis facing the nation. Schieffer said that regardless of the outcome of Friday's report, the economy will continue to take priority in voters' minds.

Some Republicans have questioned why the committee has insisted on finishing the investigation Friday, which they said was an arbitrary date meant to damage the McCain-Palin campaign with less than a month to go before Election Day.

Before lawmakers broke for their closed session, Republican state Rep. Peggy Wilson questioned whether the committee was rushing to a conclusion without time to read the estimated 300-page report and 1,000 pages of supporting documents.

"This is a pretty serious thing and I don't feel comfortable even talking about it until I've got it all read," Wilson said. "I don't know if anyone else, maybe they're speed readers, but I spent hours on it yesterday and I didn't have time to read it all."

But the committee chairman, Democratic Sen. Kim Elton, offered no delay.

"I could have spent four days, but I do believe that within the first two to three hours, I had a good understanding of what the investigator's findings were," he said.

The legislative panel's investigation - one of two that are ongoing - focuses on Palin's firing in July of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan. Monegan says Palin and her husband pressured him to fire Mike Wooten, a state trooper involved in a nasty divorce and custody dispute with the governor's sister. When Monegan resisted, he says, he was fired.

Palin's critics say that shows she used her office to settle family affairs.

"When you're the governor, you leave your household hat at home and you become governor," said state Senate President Lyda Green, a Republican who has frequently clashed with Palin.

The report is also expected to focus on Palin's husband, Todd, who had extraordinary access to the governor's office and her top aides. Todd Palin acknowledges calling and meeting over the course of many months with numerous senior government officials about Wooten, whom he described as a dangerous and unstable man who had threatened his family.

Todd Palin's Affadavits In "Troopergate" Investigation
Steve Branchflower, a retired prosecutor hired by the Legislature, also investigated whether anyone in the Palin administration pressured auditors to deny Wooten's disability claim. He had claimed he hurt his back moving a body bag, but Todd Palin later said he documented and took photos of Wooten riding a snowmobile that cast suspicion on his injury.

The McCain campaign sought to pre-empt the potentially embarrassing report this week by releasing its own analysis, attributing Monegan's firing to a legitimate dispute over budget priorities and control over the department. They contend that Monegan repeatedly tried to circumvent the governor and her top aides.

"It's not a legal matter as much as a political issue, a management issue, management of her staff," said Thomas Van Flein, an attorney hired by Palin to represent her in the matter.

Monegan had not seen the closely held report Thursday night and said he did not know what to expect.

"I just hope that the truth is figured out," Monegan said in a telephone interview Thursday. "That the governor did want me to fire him, and I chose to not. You just can't walk up to someone and say, 'I fire you.' He didn't do anything under my watch to result in termination."

In an interview with CBS News, Monegan said Todd Palin's involvement, "speaks to the level of his passion," or rather, Monegan said, Palin's "obsession" with the case.

Of Wooten, Monegan said, "He's not a bad cop."

It''''s incredible that Democrats worry about this story when Barack''''s background is THE scariest I have ever seen for a potential President. Barack''''s CHOSEN affiliations are radicals, muslims of questionable background, hate-spewing preachers, home-grown bombers, slum-lord criminals, and finally ACORN which is being investigated for fraud in several states and Barack''''s campaign contributed money to ACORN in New Orleans to get out the vote. Let''''s not forget his Fannie Mae friends and his being the highest money grabber of all the senators and the fact that the crooks that got us into this mess from Fannie are on his campaign. My God, I could go on, because these are just the tip of the iceberg that people are turning a blind eye to, but no, they want to worry about piddly junk that really doesn''''t matter to any of us.

I never thought I would see a candidate that would make Hillary look good to me, Barack has done this with his "radical" background and I truly wish it was Hillary running. At least I know she is "all american" faults and all.

Palin and the McCain campaign cleared Palin of wrongdoing? With the McCain campaign staffers writing the defense? To offset the investigation which has not been released yet?

The employees and the hubby refused to testify or cooperate despite the issuance of subpoenas? The McCain campaign has been running the show since Palin''s selection by McCain?

Now Palin''s hubby claims he and only he along with Palin''s employees did all the meetings, etc alone and Palin knew nothing about it? But it was Palin''s sister that this was about? Todd has a lot of interest in his sister in law. 2 Years after an event occurred and nothing was done or said until Wooten wanted a divorce?

Now Palin has her handpicked employees exonerate her--after saying the investigation process could take YEARS and it is done is a few weeks?

Sorry Palin--we don''t need another Cheney. We don''t need a compromised Gonzales AG. We don''t need more purged/missing emails and refusal to subpoena. If Palin is really unlucky--not only will she return to Alaska as Governor--but her days as Governor will be numbered.

I hope they have enough information to turn the matter over to a Grand Jury--and that in doing so, Palin faces impeachment if she is found to have meddled. McCain''s pick. "The Economy and the Palin choice are fundamentally sound" That''s why Bush wants to nationalize our banks and why Palin is under an investigation.

Kathy what do you think of McCain''s tight friendship with convicted felon and fraudster, Charles Keating, International arms mercinary, Singlaub or Palin sleeping with a member of an American hating Alaska Independence Party. She also gave their convention a welcoming address as Governor. How about entire Republican parties connection to the Pro-Life movement whose extreme terrorist wing bomb clinics and kill doctors. Get real, there''s plenty of mud to sling around and most of it will end up landing on your team.

I was actually thinking of voting for Hillary and don''t like McCain. I voted for Hillary in the primary. With Obama and his dirty associations and activities we would have to have our heads examined to elect him. But they will the American people are in a trance. There all drinking the Kool Aid and are following lock step. The media gives Obama a pass on everything. If McCain did any of the things that Obama has been associated with they would of had headlines. The fix is in no doubt about it. Obama will most likely win because of the media. I didn''t plan on voting this time around, I really didn''t plan on it but I will hold my nose and vote for McCain.

This is funny--McCain made Republicans embrace a former mistress as potential first lady, illegitimate teen pregnancy, an Airhead for a VP and now they must embrace socialism and helping out the poor with a 300+ billion dollar mortgage bailout--before its over, the Republican party will seem more liberal than the Democrats and the Republicans have to swallow it--because he is all that they have.

Paying for a public bailout, ignoring subpoenas, obstructing investigations, then supporting airhead females for VP with secessionist party spouses and championing pregger teens indeed--what were those conservative values again? Hypocrites.

Read Todd Palin''s affadavit..he says many times in the deposition "Sarah and I discussed the matter" he said this many times. Where are the elected officials that were supposed to be advising the governor. Who was running the Alaskan government.
Now let the governor testify to clear her name. That is the only honest thing to do is she did not abuse her powers or used her office to settle family disputes..Come on Sara Testify be an American and obey the subpeona issued by the justice system.
If we are suppose to obey the law,,what makes you above the law?
Go to testify, be an American an obey the justice system.
Honesty is the best policy. You said you welcomed an investigation, Why are you backing out now?
What are you affraid of? Go testify, show the American people that you want to lead that you are honest and law abiding.... Testify Sarah

LOL. Try harder. This is an old story and you got it wrong. Al Maliki sided with Obama and wanted the troops to leave earlier, then Bush played politics and went behind our country''s back and asked Maliki to not give into earlier but to extend the date from 2009 to 2010. Bush, according to Al Maliki wanted the extension to help McCain. The only "broken part" about this news is how late you are in talking about it--go back and try again. heh heh heh

Sarah Palin was never subpoenaed. Only Todd Palin and other employees were. Now that the Alaskan supreme court has ruled that the investigation must continue--they should subpoena her--then Todd can explain how Sarah knew nothing about him using her employees behind her back and how he could have discussed it with her--but never tell her anything. Then her loyal employees --who somehow helped Todd behind her back can explain why their loyalties lied in Palin''s personal matter and they can be fired. Then the Alaskan gov can decide if they believe any of this crock and move for grand jury indictment and impeachment of Sarah. They can take their pick--abuse of power, or incompetency. Either way--Palin was either party to and wilful in abuse or she was incompetent and a puppet of her husband --who has secessionist ties--both are dangerous for that state or our country. Now, McCain hackers--spin THIS.

More than 2,000 voter registration forms filed in northern Indiana''''s Lake County by a liberal activist group this week have turned out to be bogus, election officials said Thursday

Posted by listenupfool at 08:51 AM : Oct 10, 2008

Indiana is one of the states under Federal investigation for illegally purging thousands of voters, (along with Ohio, Georgia and several others) failing to follow federal mandates for purging and erroneously deleting thousands of names based on either faulty accounting or bogus data. Given that--anything about bogus voting and any of the states under federal investigation are as believable and McCain and Palin investigating Palin. BOGUS.

He could never get into public office as a secessionist. So he used his wife as a puppet. Nothing new here--Todd did it, Now McCain does it. Sarah is none the wiser. Hope they blast her and seek grounds for criminal prosecution--make her rue the day she accepted McCain''s gambit after interviewing her for all of 15 minutes.

You know as i watch more and more of this election i am amused by the McCain Palin campaign i mean come on all spin and opinion aside. McCain makes snappy quick un-throughout replys in debates he also makes snappy quick un-thought-out decisions look at palin.. all the news networks were talking about how Obama wouldn%u2019t get the female vote because of Hillary Clinton and suddenly literally the next day McCain has picked a woman no one has heard of! come on!

and then going behind obamas back on the economy and "pausing his campaign" when he had told obama that he wanted to just put a joint statement out again snappy and un-thought-out.

This guy is not who you want running a world super power he will make hasty and snappy decissions his opinions and views are more like 1808 not 2008 its time to take a more realistic non bias view on the world and how to lead the USA. UK PM gordon brown and tv news stations have been going on about how UK support for the US would drop if McCain wins and that they are worried about palin even being near power. if the UK thinks that im sure it will be a big hit with the countries that dont like the US

to be fair to McCain--as President--most of his snappy/quick unthought out decisions would not be relevant since he has to go through Congress to initiate most things.

on the other hand, Congress is peopled with sycophantic idiots and McCain could appoint a lot of Palin calibre people to Government posts and the SCOTUS--making our nightmare under Bush seem like a Teletubby special in comparison to the ******* his own incompetency is guaranteed to unleash.

50: the number of days after Palin announced she "will fully cooperate" with an ethics investigation into the "Troopergate" scandal that the McCain campaign announced she was "unlikely to cooperate" because it had been "hijacked" by Obama operatives. The probe was unanimously authorized by a bipartisan panel of eight Alaska Republicans and four Democrats.

Just labeling this "troopergate" shows the slant the media has given this. "The investigation focuses on her firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan" yet "troopergate" (with reference to a republican scandal "watergate") is the label the media placed on this. There is no scandal as has been found. Monegan didn''t take orders from his boss, a female. He "liked" the trooper, saying he "wasn''t a bad cop". Maybe the abuse of power charge should be placed on the trooper. Driving around with an open container of an alcoholic beverage? Being under the influence time and time again? Having several charges of abuse being brought up against him? This makes him a "good cop"? He threatened Palin''s family. Todd did what any MALE with a pair would do: he complained about the trooper to anyone who would listen. That is his right as a citizen. Wouldn''t you? The "safety" commisioner was insubordinate and fired. To this the media jumped on the corpse of this case seeing an opportunity to smear the Republican ticket in their ongoing pimping of Obama. Shows that the press is not "free" but has a price and it was met.

No matter what your opinion, no party and no person can take the law into their own hands--not even GOP governors or VPs or Presidents--no man is above the law.
The biggest problem with troopergate: The actual tasering event took place 2 years before at a family picnic and no one (not even Sarah or Todd) said anything or complained until 2 years later. At the time of the event--the Police Dept got wind of it and suspended Wooten for 5 days for being irresponsible. Monegan took over after that fact. Todd and Sarah wanted harsher action after Sarah''s sister entered into a divorce with Wooten. The rationale and defense of Palin kept changing as holes appeared in each excuse for firing Monegan. Todd has admitted to repeatedly pressuring the state employees and Monegan--but says Sarah knew nothing about it--then he says he repeatedly discussed it with Sarah. His affadavit contradicts him--if he discussed it with Sarah--how could she not know--abuse of power--all over this.

We had two terms of economic prosperity with record federal revenues being reported. This is due to the Bush economic policies. However, the problem was the reckless federal spending with drug prescriptions, economic stimulus checks, etc. The poison injected by democrats shielding a massive case of mortgage FRAUD did the trick. We are in global economic crisis. Neither candidate will pull us out. The question is: which one will generate more revenue for the federal government? The answer should be obvious: tax cuts. Only this time, no reckless spending. Obama''s plan has been used by every democratic administration. The results have always been a reduction in federal revenue and increase in the size of government. As for the economic crisis? Nobody even knows how large this problem is. Nobody knows how to fix it.........yet.

This will be great---with the mccain hate squad harping on obama all this time about fabricated conspiracy, NOW we get REAL news about a REAL lawbreaker and an embarrassment to the country---sarah trashmouth palin. She has been the biggest hypocrit ever seen in politics, slamming others while she is giving the middle finger to our laws. Finally she will get the attention for her corruption that she so richly deserves,
but be aware, she and mccain might send those klan-type seething mob folks from thier rallies to your house to make sure you are intimidated into silence. mccain''s new tact is beyond alarming....hate squads who menace the media and free speech and make thinly veiled threats to those who don''t submit.

You know I''''m tired of hearing ingrates dengrate John McCains record as if they somehow know what the man went through as a fighter pilot and POW. This mans courage and character are undeniable yet there are those who questuion without any basi of understanding. Being a vet alone is not and does not qualify as a judge for what McCain and other POW''''s had to endure

It does not take courage to become a POW. It takes either bad luck, incompetence or a bit of both--the people who capture you will do the rest. Conversely, no amount of expertise is gained by that capture. People who were fvck ups or slackers or even heros who served and came back were not somehow imbued with knowledge to be in charge of anything. The only expertise they have is how to survive captivity by the Viet Cong. After that, if they were the type to bungle or crash a lot of planes all over the states or go awol or ignore their disfigured wife and marry their mistress--THAT says more about their character than being captured in a war. After all, it is not as if any POW ever planned to be captured--that is not a measure of heroism or valor--it IS a testament to preserverance or luck.

Only this time, no reckless spending. Obama''''s plan has been used by every democratic administration.

If what you say is the case, then how come there was a budget surplus handed to Bush after the Clinton administration. I think your accusations are mixed up.

McCain / Palin release bogus self investigation report yesterday to try to obscure the results of the real report today. Todd Palin''s testimony released by McCain / Palin yesterday proves the campaign was involved in a considerable number of lies already on the matter. Why should anyone believe McCain / Palin on this matter as they have already provided the proof that they have lied in the past about the matters involved in this investigation? There should probably be consideration of charges of obstruction filed against many involved including some inside the McCain / Palin campaign.

Mr. 22582,
When do whites get their own entaertainment television? DUH, lets see, there''s NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX then there''s, MSNBC, CNN, to name a few. What gives me the "runs" is it''s folks like you that forgets this country is not now or has in the past been fair in its'' treatment of black folks. It seems everytime there''s a drug bust if it''s a black person, "your" news reports withold the picture if it''s a white, but blows up the screen when it''s a black person. Remember how George H.W. Bush used that despicable
approach in his campaign using Willie Horton? How many of this seasons new yelevision shows has a black person as the main character? BET was/is necessary for African America be be reassured we don''t don''t get lost in the "shuffle." Go Tyler Perry with your "bad self" and kudos to your new television studio in "Hot"lanta!
