(CBS)  This week Sen. John McCain and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, went after one of the nation's leading voter registration groups which focuses its efforts on minorities and low-income families and is now being investigated for voter fraud.

Known as ACORN, it runs one of the largest community voter registration drives in the nation, signing up more than 1.3 million mostly minority and low-income people this year alone.

But now top Republicans are calling for a "full-scale" investigation of their operation, and McCain is calling the organization out, CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian reports.

"There are serious allegations of voter fraud," McCain said this week.

Joseph Borges, the registrar of voters in Bridgeport, Conn., says his office has been overwhelmed by bogus forms filled out with thousands of fake and duplicate names - two boxes alone packed with non-existent addresses - all submitted by ACORN.

"There's something wrong with the process, to have this happen for a registration drive," said Borges.

Since June, election officials in at least a dozen states have raised red flags over more than 10,000 voter registration forms filed by ACORN. For example, in one Ohio county ACORN registered the same person 17 times.

And earlier this week law enforcement agents raided ACORN's office in Las Vegas, carting away files and computers.

"It was purely politically motivated," said Bertha Lewis, a chief organizer for ACORN. "The right wing and specifically the Republicans."

Lewis is the chief organizer for ACORN. She claims only a tiny fraction of their new registrations have problems. Problems, critics charge, related to the pressure ACORN reportedly puts on its workers to up their numbers - at any cost.

"Do you have quotas that people have to fill every day?" Keteyian asked Lewis.

"No," she said. "We pay people by the hour. And also, we train folks on a daily basis."

But CBS News has talked to nearly two dozen ACORN workers who all said they were pressured to increase their number of registration cards - to the point of copying names out of phone books, signing up inmates, and registering the dead.

"They just have to maintain 25 cards a day," Borges said. "That's a quota, as far as I'm concerned."

Whether simple error or outright fraud, the charges surrounding ACORN are already raising doubts about the integrity of the upcoming election in key parts of the country.

McCain must suspect that ACORN is recruiting Democratic voters. If he believed they were going after Republicans he wouldn''t care.

The McCain/Palin campaigne has become a perfect example of throwing stuff at the wall to see if anything sticks. Whether or not those two are qualified to be President and VP has become a moot point. They have stirred up so much hatred and innuendo that it is really hard to tell.

Any fraud is unacceptable. However we seem to forget the voter fraud of the Republican right in the 2000 and 2004 elections. Does anyone recall the masssive republican effort to turn voters away in Ohio in 2004 election? It seems to me that the republicans are master''s of deception and the first to cry foul. Lets watch as they will do everything possible to turn the Acorn problem into a dark and evil plot lead by Senator Obama.

Barbara, I think your comment is right on target. The republicans will sink to any level. From using race or names that sounds different to elicit fear. All one needs to do it to look at the crowds that McCain/Palin attract. I can count one one hand the number of black and hispanic people. They are white, largely overweight, and dare I say it--not too bright.

I find it interesting that the ''frauds'' are occurring in the swing states. If the McCain campaign plants people in their mobs to shout hateful comments, is it any stretch that they planted people in the voter registration organization to discredit it?

It does sound poltically motivated. If a worker registers daffy duck because he wants to make his quota, then hopefully somebody say, hey there is no daffy duck voting. Since they caught the errors, why are they making an issue? Pure nonsense and another way at trying to stop people from voting.

I could care less about the affiliation of the people being registered. What I do care about is if there is voter fraud. I don''t want my vote diluted by fraudulent votes. I also do not want to see a protracted legal battle over who won. We have too many problems in this country to be drug down that road again. We need an administration elected outright and ready to roll on day one. Diversions such as lengthy court battles will drive this country further apart and delay the new administration%u2019s time to transition from a candidate to a president.

Shame on ACORN for this stupid act. It doesn''t help Obama''s chances but rather it hurts them. Whoever filled out these bogus forms was as dumb as a box of rocks...very sad. They have also further soiled the ACORN organization as a whole. Let''s bring the perpetrators to justice and get on with the business of *fairly* electing Obama and Biden.

This headline is another subtle example of Media Left-wing bias.
If ACORN was a quasi-GOP org, the headline would say "GOP''s ACORN Non-profit involved in Voter Fraud."

Instead, the headline implies it''s just a GOP accusation, when ACORN has admitted fraud.

Acorn is notorious for this type of fraudulent behavior and it''s not coincidental that Obama has had a very long and active relationship with them. The Dems had major hissy fits over voter fraud, yet the media and Obama supporters are dismissive over this because the fraudulent voter registration benefits Obama. Another part of this insidious fraud is that in many areas, especially those deemed sanctuary cities, criminal illegal aliens are allowed to register and vote since they''re not challenged on their citizen status, legal social security cards, etc. Obama has surrounded himself with close relationships and associations for multiple years with extremist, racist, bigoted, separatist individuals like Ayers, Wright, Moss, Pfleger, Farrahkan, Acorn and many others. And yet, those supporting Obama could care less. They don''t care because they''re incapable of appreciating that in an Obama his ties are the thing that makes him tick. He is also an extremist and separatist and lives the mantra of Malcolm X, which was "by any means necessary". Voter fraud is part of this mantra.

Most voters who voted him in for two terms should be made to pay for the billions lost, due to the greed and incompetence of this administration.

That would get them to think (unlikely if you are a republican) about the consequences of their votes.

How can it be voter fraud when the votes have not even been counted yet? The voter applications that should be discarded will be. 10,000 voter applications is not very many. These were not actual votes, they were voter applications.

McCain and Palin and the crowds they get at their rally''s will go to great lengths to use fear mongering and hate to win an election.

Using fear and hate mongering to supress peoples'' voting rights should be investigated.

McCain and Palin don''t want to talk about real issues, because they have NO plan for the economy and NO plan to end this war in Iraq.

I have a question for Sarah Palin, were you the director of a 527 political group organized by the now indicted Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska? How about answering the question, Mrs. Palin?

Let''s not forget that the Republicans won the election in 2000 by a 5 to 4 vote in Daddy Bushes'' Supreme Court.

Lets not forget that this election is about real issues like the economy, education, and health care, and not slime and repugnant political games that McCain and Palin are playing.

ACORN should be investigated for this. It is an offense against other voters. We''ve heard of this kind of thing before to be proven later as the truth. This is just like POACHING in a political sense against the worth of my rights. I won''t have this being done to an American citizen!

This is a non-issue. ACORN pays it''s people to get these registrations so of course to keep getting paid they fill out bogus forms. These are all caught when the state puts them into the system. So these bogus forms do not result in any extra votes. I would like to see this practice of paying people to get registrations to stop because it gives this impression but it does not result in fraudulent votes.

For REAL information on REAL VOTE FRAUD I usually check with Blackboxvoting.ORG

They have an EXCELLENT film called "Hacking Democracy", several RESOURCES on what an HONEST ELECTION should look like and articles on the latest tricks, scams and manipulations that are happening.

The SURPRISING THING is that what THEY are MOST concerned about IS NOT BEING TALKED ABOUT in the MSM!

They also have a grassroots movement to help KEEP THE ELECTIONS HONEST that could REALLY use some volunteers and help with EDUCATION and watching to INSURE HONESTY.

Some of the HIDDEN GAMES with the ACTUAL VOTE COUNTS that are being played are MUCH MORE DAMAGING than some FOOL filling out a "registration for Daffy Duck" that WILL NEVER BE USED TO VOTE.

THE HIDDEN GAMES to DENY, SUPPRESS and CHANGE VOTES DURING THE COUNT actually DO ALTER ELECTION RESULTS!!

Hmmm--after Limbaugh''s ''Operation Chaos'' during the primaries, it seems plausible that at least part of this could be caused by McCain supporters volunteering with ACORN who want to disrupt the election in favor of their candidate. After all, we know his campaign pays people to post (Astroturf) on boards like this one.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/06/AR2008080603589_pf.html

Anyone who wants to accuse me of being ''paranoid'' should remember the old saying-- ;) --''Just because you''re paranoid doesn''t mean they''re not after you.''

And it seems a heckuva lot less paranoid than the idea that Obama is a muslim Manchurian cadidate.

They BELIEVE you HAVE TO OWN PROPERTY or YOU DON''T COUNT.

They are going through the VOTING ROLLS and if your address is UNDER SOME BRIDGE because you''re a HOMELESS VETERAN with probably some sort of DISABILITY they WILL REMOVE YOUR NAME because you DON''T have a "real" PROPERTY ADDRESS!

You can FIGHT for your country and LOSE LIMBS and other body parts but DON''T think that YOU DESERVE TO VOTE if you''re HOMELESS according to the "righteous GOP!!

10,000 out of 3,000,000 ACORN Registrations.

Only 0.3%

This was NOT an effort to CREATE VOTES IN THE ELECTION. NONE of these false REGISTRATIONS were going to result in actual VOTES.

These false registrations were done by EMPLOYEES TRYING TO UP THEIR REGISTRATION NUMBERS. These "phantoms" were NEVER going to SHOW UP at the polls! So NO VOTER FRAUD would have occurred.

So this "Registration Fraud" is really just a smokescreen by McCain and the GOP.

No problem unless it''s your grandmother that lost her driver''s license because she can''t see so well anymore but YOU probably believe SHE doesn''t DESERVE TO VOTE either - NO "photo" ID -NO VOTE.

That DISENFRANCHISES th AMISH and several other religious groups that DON''T allow photos because it is "vain" or against their beliefs.

Of course that "homeless VETERAN" is REALLY messed over not only has his/her ID probably been STOLEN but they DON''T have a "real" property address SO they can GIVE OVER THEIR LIVES but YOU are SO MUCH BETTER THAN THEM that YOU can DENY THEM THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE!

And OH BTW - HOW FAR DOWN has King George DRIVEN the ECONOMY DOWN TODAY?

Two WORDS - WEALTH GAP

UNTIL THAT IS NARROWED and the DERIVATIVE SEWAGE BACKUP that the NEOCONS CREATED is REMOVED this Nation WILL CONTINUE to pull it''s and THE WORLD ECONOMY DOWN!

The TINY NUMBER of "questioned" registrations will have NO EFFECT ON THE ELECTION

10,000 QUESTIONED registrations out of 1,300,000 ACORN Registrations are "suspect"

That is only 0.7% of all the registrations filed by Acorn

10,000 QUESTIONED registrations out of 212,000,000 registered voters in the USA

So the QUESTIONED registrations are only 0.004% of ALL VOTERS in the USA.

ALL OF THESE QUESTIONED REGISTRATIONS will be REJECTED by the county registrars. So NO VOTER FRAID will occur.

Isn''t Mrs. Annenberg a contributor to McCain. So I suppose McCain is connected to Ayers too.

The big question is why CBS News is buying into Fox News(sic) propaganda. ACORN registers voters. It''s obligated to flag any spurious registrations. When they do notify the election board they''re accused by the Republicans of submitting false registrations. When is CBS going to investigate voter caging? Thousands of people are illegally and unknowingly being removed from voter rolls. Can you imagine the chaos that will result if people try to exercise their right to vote and they''re turned away.

Lets get this straight - an organization hands out a voter registration form to an individual.

The individual fills it out and uses the name of a Disney cartoon character.

The organization collects the form and places it with other filled out voter registration forms.

The organization would be committing fraud IF THEY tampered with the voter registration form containing the name of the Disney cartoon character.

In this case it is a NO WIN situation for the organization performing voter registration...
