Bus Packed With Amish Flips; 14 Hurt

Overloaded Bus Clips Semitrailer; Several Children Among The Injured

  •  (CBS)

(AP)  A bus overloaded with members of an Amish church group clipped a semitrailer Thursday, flipping the bus onto its side and sending 14 people to the hospital, including several children, authorities said.

Most of those injured suffered cuts and bruises, though four adults and two children were in serious condition. None of the injuries was believed to be life-threatening, police said. The 13-seat bus was carrying 22 people.

The driver swerved left to avoid a slower vehicle entering southbound U.S. 23 and clipped the front of the semitrailer, said State Trooper Randy Phare. The bus turned onto its side and skidded to a stop along the highway in Northfield Township, about 40 miles west of Detroit.

Another vehicle then crashed into the back of the stopped truck.

Alcohol or excessive speed were not factors in the crash, police said. But authorities were looking into the possibility of charges against the bus driver, said Phare, who wasn't sure whether those aboard the bus were wearing seat belts.

"It could have been a lot worse," he said, pointing to the truck's size and speed. He estimated the truck was traveling between 60 mph and 70 mph. The speed limit on that stretch of highway is 70 mph.

The bus passengers, members of a Mount Pleasant-area church, were headed to a funeral in Ohio, Phare said.

Traffic was stopped along the highway as emergency workers treated the injured. All of the injuries were on the bus, police said.

Four adults and two children were in serious condition at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, spokeswoman Kara Gavin said.

Anything that will not evolve to fit current reality dies.

Ask the Republicans come November 5th.

That shows where you are coming from. Just looking for a chance to throw some political jab, totally out of context.

The only think that is dying is ethical behavior and it is not just dying it is being murdered.

What are your ethical standards?

"Thou shall not commit adultery." Unless she is really hot?

"Thou shall not steal." Unless it is over $100?

"Thou shall bear false witness." Unless it will get you elected?

If your ethics are corrupted it is by your own actions and as much as you want, you cannot blame it on a learning disorder or even John McCain. Your dog cannot eat your morality.

If you commit to a moral standard and a moral course of behavior, modern or archaic, you cannot just change it because it is momentarily inconvienent. Once you have abandoned your principles they are gone and cannot be recovered with excuses.

I don''t feel that these people cannot call themselves "Amish" if they are riding on a bus. I don''t feel that someone using birth control can call themselves "Catholic", nor pork eaters Jews, nor liquor drinkers Muslims. You profess a faith as a total committment and not as a matter of pick and choose luxury. If not you are a hypocrite and no longer have the ethical right to profess that faith.

To do those things and still say you are one of "the faith" is only admitting that you belong to the "Church of the Divine Hypocrisy".

To answer the why question, read the article. They were heading from Michigan to a funeral in OHIO. Horse and buggy would take a month. Most religions make exceptions for certain rules under certain circumstances.

That is a cop-out. Religion based on convienence of the moment. It would be better to have no religion at all than to have one that you treat like an a la carte menu. You either buy the whole package or get out of the store. If you say you are a Catholic you can''t use birth control, if you say you are are Jew or Muslim you can''t eat pork, if you say you are Amish you can''t ride on a bus. To do those things and still say you are one of "the faith" is only admitting that you belong to the "Church of the Divine Hypocrisy".

Most religions make exceptions for certain rules under certain circumstances. In this instance, the distance and time involved would allow them to take modern travel. They probably could haeve gone by train (they have been around since the 1800''s) Also, don''t forget that the kids can go out into the real world for a year (enjoying all sorts of modern things) before choosing to go back to the Amish way of life.

cjw3cma isn''t that far off the map.

What were Amish doing on a bus? When thes people belong to a religion that does not believe in using modern vehicles you have to wonder how this situation even came up. It would be like reading "14 Jews injured in bacon grease fire". You would have to ask what they were doing around pork in the first place.

And why didn''t whoever wrote this story not think to ask? In journalism it is supposed to be the 5 W''s. They got who, what, where and when, so why not "why"? (And this is a big "WHY"!
Shame on you CBS!

Anyway, I would venture to guess that today there are 14 Amish people wondeing about divine retribution.
