CBS Evening News Reality Checks The Latest From The GOP Campaign Trail

(CBS)  It's probably apparent from Gov. Sarah Palin's speeches how her running mate, Sen. John McCain, will go after Sen. Barack Obama at the presidential candidates' second debate. The standard Republican claim is that Obama has voted to raise taxes 94 times, CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews reports.

The fact is the 94-vote total is misleading. Twenty-three of these votes were against tax cuts; seven votes would have lowered some taxes and, according to the non-partisan Factcheck.org, most of the other votes were budget resolutions which are guidelines but not law.

"These are not actual bills that would raise taxes; further action would be required before any tax increase could take effect," said Viveca Novak of Factcheck.org.

Palin, along with a new McCain ad, also claims Obama disparaged U.S. forces in Afghanistan by saying this: that our troops in Afghanistan are just "air raiding villages and killing civilians."

The fact is: That's just part of what Obama said. He was actually saying, more troops in Afghanistan would reduce civilian casualties.

In August of 2007, he said: "and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous problems there."

McCain's newest and toughest ad says Obama, in his ads, has been lying.

Especially when Obama claimed that McCain would slash Social Security by half.

In fact, the Obama claim is false. McCain wants to slow future spending on Social Security, but has never called for cuts.

Palin continues to question Obama's ties to William Ayers, once a Vietnam War protester linked to several bombings.

Palin said: "Bill Ayers is an unrepentant domestic terrorist."

The facts are: today William Ayers is professor of education. Obama has served with Ayers on two education and charity related boards, but has condemned Ayer's violent past as "detestable."

How does a ''B'' average student in high school GET IT ELITE PRIVATE SCHOOLS. (Occidental, Columbia, and especially HARVARD.) He does no list any letters of recommendation and how he paid for his room and board and etc. while at Harvard. Everyone is in Awe of him because he was selected Editor of the Harvard Law review.. but no one knows the requirements. He has no PRINTED ARTICLES AVAILABLE that he wrote before he was editor or after. There was a clause added to the selection could be made on affirmative action issues. (he was the first black in 109 years.)

He avoids, Ayers, Fiegler, Wright, Daly, Jones, Palmer and Rezko. BY not telling the truth about his relationships.

Hallett and Chapman represented the trio at meetings to obtain the grant. Ayers did not meet either Mr. or Mrs. Annenberg.

As political consultant *** Morris pointed out in a recent article, %u201CAfter Walter Annenberg%u2019s foundation offered several hundred million dollars to American public schools in the mid-90%u2019s, William Ayers applied for $50 million for Chicago.%u201D

It appears that Ayers applied for the grant, which leads me to believe his name was on the request. Obama administered it.

Do you understand how a philanthropic foundations work? Groups submit grant requests. Boards or managers of philanthropic organizations review and approve the grants.

However, according to the New York Times, Chicago received $49 million from a $500 million endowment by Walter H. Annenberg, the billionaire publisher, for school reform efforts nationwide, and the city added $98 million in matching funds for the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (CAC).

Besides, the New York Times reported Ayers was not the chairman of the CAC, Obama was from 1995 to 2000.

So, Mrs. Annenberg never even knew Mr. Ayers, but the same cannot be said of Senator Obama.

I think that if the American government felt that Ayers was a true threat they would have kept him locked up. He is a professor. So how do you feel about the school he teaches at, the students, parents, staff. Are they too "friends" with a terriost. How quickly we have forgotten the Gulf War. When the Taliban fought with us. Ayers and Dohrn''s "revolution" and "terrorism" (in which they phoned ahead evacuation warnings) accomplished the goals of FBI and J. Edgar Hoover to a T.

At his trial, Ayers was acquitted by a judge who exercised his discretion to apply strict interpretation of the Bill of Rights for this "terrorist". Perhaps the judge felt sorry for the poor boy? Some ideological kinship?

AYERS has a somewhat unclear relationship with THE CANDIDATE WHO IS THE #1 FAVORITE OF WALL STREET and has the full backing of the Permanent Trustee and co-founder of the Trilateral Commission, Zbigniew Brzezinski.

TELL ME HOW AYERS DOES NOT FIT THE PROFILE OF A TYPICAL FBI and/or CIA PROVOCATEUR. Go ahead.

What did Ayers and Dohrn do? They created a split, where SDS and PLP were converging. They staged a "coup" and marched out with the Youth to form RYM (based on age, not class). Later they went underground and started bombing (EMPTY) buildings. This made the middle class love them. Right? Wrong. Their bombings alienated the middle class.

The media associated Weathermen bombers with civil disobedience and democratic expression of protest (an intrinsic American right and responsibility, every bit as much as gun rights).

The New York Times wrote, "Mr. Ayers, who in 1970 was said to have summed up the Weatherman philosophy as: ''Kill all the rich people. Break up their cars and apartments. Bring the revolution home, kill your parents, that''s where it''s really at,'' is today distinguished professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago."

Ayer''s wife Bernadine Dohrn, also of the Weather Underground, praised the Charles Manson murders. She said, "Dig it! Manson killed those pigs, then they ate dinner in the same room with them, then they shoved a fork into a victim''s stomach."

Furthermore, he [Ayers] told the New York Times in September 2001, "I don''t regret setting bombs...I feel we [the Weather Underground] didn''t do enough."

Chicago mayor Richard M. Daley, who knows both Obama and Bill Ayers well, and who supports Obama, says of Obama and Ayers, %u201CThey%u2019re friends. So what?%u201D

Perhaps many Americans can overlook or ignore this. But I think many more would not.
