Pope: Meltdown Shows Money Is "Nothing"

By
CBSNews
(CBS/ AP)  Pope Benedict XVI says the global financial crisis shows the futility of money and ambition.

"He who builds only on visible and tangible things like success, career and money builds the house of his life on sand," the pontiff says.

"We are now seeing, in the collapse of major banks, that money vanishes, it is nothing," the pope adds.

The pontiff was speaking Monday as he opened the works of a meeting of 253 bishops at the Vatican.

Benedict says "the only solid reality is the word of God."

How do you figure that? Protestants aren''t "fanatics".

Do you know what makes the Protestant religions so defective?

They don''t have the trillions of dollars worth of assets the Catholic Church has.

It''s too bad he can''t practice what he preaches. I bet he won''t instruct the thousands of Catholic Churches around the world not to pass the collection basket this Sunday. I''ll bet he won''t instruct his churches to sell all of their gold cups, tabernancles, and miscellaneous trinkets. I bet he won''t put the Vatican up for sale and give the proceeds to the poor. After all, "foxes have lairs, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head." But the Pope, also known as "The Vicar of Christ" has the Vatican...

If all Catholics took "the pope''s" advice, "the pope" would shudder with fear, because catholics wouldn''t be able to make their donations to the church...

You have a point about his personal situation, but it''s interesting he''d make the generalized comment here and now. :)

The Word of God; for the love of money is the root of all evil - I think that''s the phrase... And Jesus was the Son of God. Apart from turning water into wine (can you picture a bunch of drunk disciples? Too ghastly TO contemplate...), Jesus knows what Life was about.

And those millions go out to the poor. More than any other agency in the world.

Peace be with you.

Last I saw those millions went to the lawyers and the plaintiffs of court cases where roman catholic priests were molesting children. But, perhaps the plaintiffs were poor too. Now they''re not. Is that charity?
