Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain are on the campaign trail speaking about each other's stance on the economic bailout plan. Jeff Glor reports.

(CBS)  CBS News Investigative Producer Laura Strickler wrote this story for CBSNews.com.

Over the weekend, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin accused Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) of associating with terrorists.

“Our opponent is someone who sees America as imperfect enough to pal around with terrorists who target their own country,” Palin said.

What is she referring to?

FACTS: Palin is talking about Obama’s association with a 1960’s anti war radical who now lives in Chicago named Bill Ayers. Obama met Ayers in 1995. The senator has repeatedly noted that when Ayers committed his domestic acts of terrorism forty years ago, Obama was eight years old.

Ayers was one of the founders of a radical anti-war group called the Weather Underground that claimed responsibility for a bombing in San Francisco that killed a police officer and hurt another. Ayers’s group also claimed to be involved in plans to bomb other locations aimed at disrupting the Vietnam war effort. However, despite his involvement and that of his wife, they were never convicted of any crimes due in part to prosecutorial misconduct.

Over time Ayers emerged in Chicago as a community activist, became a professor and got involved in public school reform. This is how Obama met Ayers at a meeting on schools. Ayers reportedly hosted a campaign event for Obama’s early forays into statewide politics in 1995 and the two men sat on two different foundation boards together where their job was to distribute educational grants to organizations. Ayers still sits on the board of The Woods Fund of Chicago but Obama left the board in 2002. That was the last time Obama had any official link to Ayers.

There is no evidence that Ayers gave money to or has been involved in the Obama campaign. There is also no indication the two have been in regular communication for at least six years.

In response today, Senator Obama said:

“He’s a professor at the University of Chicago - ah, Illinois, teaches education, and he engaged in these despicable acts 40 years ago when I was 8 years old. I served on a board with him. And so now they’re trying to use this as guilt by association, and as you said, they’ve explicitly stated that what they want to do is to change the topic because they don’t want to talk about the economy and the failed policies of the last eight years.”

So you''re saying a foundation that Ayers himself and his family funds, uhbama still took the position? What about the part where uhbama''s first state senate election was kicked off in 1995 at Ayers'' home?

So you''re telling me a guy who still endorses a criminally investigated Alexis Giannoulias, a guy who accepts a leg up on a land purchase by a guy also being criminally investigated, is totally ignorant of Ayers'' and Dorhn''s past?

Sorry, but a guy willing to use race to knock hillary out of the election will stoop to any low. As well as working up a technicality against Alice Palmer (who ended up campaigning for Hillary) to get her booted off the ballot...

uhbama is disgusting.
Suuuure.

McCain has LOST ALL HONOR and CREDIBILITY

The stock market tumbles and Palin/McCain spend their time on an old irrelevant acquaintance of Obama''s.

Their LIES about Obama have been disproved, but the far-right radio parrots keep squawking loudly because it is the only thing they have left. Their policies on WAR, and ECONOMY have been a disaster. What else would you expect KARL ROVE and the little parrots to do?

All about John McCain - that pristine example of Republican ethics and morality who is oh so believable fullfilling the role of "reformer" and "maverick".

At least, that is what he wants you to believe.

If Hillary was credible enough to raise these doubts abt Obama back then, why cant Mccain do so... Obama keeps on making Senator Mccain guity by association to Bush, so why cant his own associations matter. The Bill Ayers was contributed to his early campaign??? For God''s sake, why wont it matter? AYERS, THE EX-CON, PASTOR FOR 20YRS....Why on earth wont it all matter? If Hillary cld raise these doubts back then, Mccain shld. Americans deserve to know who they are really voting for & hopefully, it wont be someone that surfaced from nowhere or a very shady past!!!

CBS has really demostrated biased headlines. Why assist the Republicans in their false, misleading, cutthroat tactics to win office. Winning is so important to S. Palin that she is willing to lie. Why can''t we question her about her affair, or John McCain on his affair with his present spouse? Or Sarah Palin''s children''s sexual, drug and alcohol habits, not to mention that her son used his mother''s name to manipulate his peers out of *** and drugs, per headlines that you would not print. This is a destructive game and all of America will be affected by the next 4 years from any Republican. America has plenty of questions, lets askem all, but that should mean ALL!!!

It wasn''t uncommom in the deep south not so long ago for people to snuff out the lights of promising black men by engaging in this type of slanderous attack. Just suggesting that a black man looked at a white woman was enough to mobilize a mob.Lynching a man politically for such an obviously false charecterization would be taking a page out of history, and would restore Americas dubious but not forgotten past.

destardi1,

The ones who started the race card thing were the Clintons, if you can recall correctly. Maybe this is why Obama didn''t pick Hillary as his running mate, and I don''t blame him. Allow me to let you all in on a sad fact. Once you become a public figure, other people in high positions who you have to associate with have sketchy past. Try investigating other members of the Senate (like McCain) and see what you come up with. McCain has his share of skeletons in his closet.

Its funny how the news networks are not reporting on MCCains dirty deeds and Palin''s is yet to come. MCCain was also friends with a terriost. He helped the gaming industry with dirty politics, and wait you have the diamond land dealings, not to mention the keating5. Wasn''t he the one that pushed for deregulation for his friends that now work for him. Our taxes are paying for the 170 lobbiests that now work for him. Its all fake. I can''t wait for the truth to come out about sarah and see what her explanation is for charging rape victims for their rape kits.

It''s so obvious Obama is going to defend this country against terrorism better than anyone else could. One thing about McCain, his long record in the senate is open for all to see. Obimits past is in the very least "questionable". And questions he refuses to answer or turn the subject on to something else.
Nice try....but won''t work.

So much for you being neutral on election 2008. You and Katie are clearly Obama supporters. The media thinks it can shove Obama down our thoats like he has won the election before it has been held. This is BS and when your rating drop you will know why. I really can not see how any rational thinking American could want Obama to President. Being PC is not good a reason to distroy our nation. Typical Republican logic.

Here is an example: Bob is allowed to kill ants so why shouldn''t I be allowed to kill humans. After all we are both killing living things.

Same thing here: the comparison is not 1-to-1.

Bush and McCain have been joined at the hip for the last eight years. McCain votes 90% of the time with Bush. He openly favors continuing all Bush policies that have put us in this mess. There is ovewhelming evidence of the two hanging out together, and openly supporting each other.

Compare that to Obama/Ayers relationship. One campaign event and sitting on a company board 13 years ago is hardly a close relationship. Plus, Obama has had no links with Ayers in the last six years.

Just not the same as McCain/Bush.

And, that is why, my friend, your comparison is unfair.

I was one month ago going to vote for Obama. And then saw an Ad on Obama and Ayers. So I decided to investigate and what I found appalled me. I cannot beleive people are thinking of Voting for Obama when there is a dangerous pattern.

1.Obama and Bill Ayers Annenberg Challenge Coverup
2.Obama and Alwadi, a palestine terrorist
3.Obama and Rev Wright
4.OBama and the socialist demcratic association
5.Obama and Acorn
6.Obmaa and Rev Flaggert
7.Hamas donated 30k to Obama
8.International Solidarity Movement
9.Wheels of Justice
10.Rezko
11.And now ACORN to the list of Obama radical associations

Take all of Obama associates and his comments he has made and ill sum up Obama.

Obama is the most left wing radical terrorist sympathizer who is pro-muslim and anti-Isreal. Obama is pro-black. Obama is arrogant, lies and throws people under the bus to pursue power. Obama is dangerous for this country. In a post 911 World , I dont understand how the Main Stream Media is not reporting or investigating Obama background. CAN anyone name a person in the past besides Michelle, Rev WRight, BIll AYers, Rezko who can VOUCH for Obama.
