(CBS)  As good as both candidates were last night, they were also quite good at being wrong, CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews reports.

Beginning with a specific Sarah Palin claim that Barack Obama tried to raise taxes on middle class families, saying that he voted to increase taxes as late as last year for those families making only $42,000 a year.

That claim is simply false.

"Families, no way," said Brooks Jackson, director of FactCheck.org.

According to the non partisan FactCheck.org, none of Obama's votes would've raised taxes on families making $42,000.

"If you're a family, you'd have to make $83,000, maybe over $90,000, a year to have been affected by that," Jackson said.

Biden, meanwhile, not wanting the tax mistake to stand, claimed that McCain was for the same thing.

"John McCain voted the exact same way," Obama said.

Wrong again. McCain voted against the budget bill.

On the crucial, heartland issue of taxes on small business, Palin claimed Obama's tax increases on families making $250,000 would impact millions of small companies.

"You're forgetting millions of small businesses that are going to fit into that category," Palin said.

Millions of businesses? Not even close. Only 1.4 percent of small business owners, 480,000 people, make more than $250,000.

The figure is a few hundred thousand, but it's not in the millions.

On the foreign policy issue of who presidents should meet, Biden tried to claim Obama never said he'd meet Iran's President Ahmadinejad.

"He did not say sit down with Ahmadinejad," Biden said.

Fact is that's a stretch. On the CNN/YouTube debate last year, Obama was asked directly if he would meet the leader of Iran, among others.

"I would," Obama said.

Then - on the energy front - there's the Sarah Palin claim a new Alaska pipeline is under way.

"And we're building a nearly $40 billion natural gas pipeline," Palin said.

The fact is she's not quite "building."

Palin has legislative approval to plan the pipeline, but construction isn't even close, and gas flow is 10 years away.

The fact that Biden and Palin were squabbling over that 42 thousand dollar family is no political accident. Forty-two thousand dollars in income is in the range that some economists call the middle of the middle class -- the very audience both candidates were trying to win over last night.

I like that....disable adding comments so the negative posts stay up as long as possible....

The Main Stream Media: USA Today, NY Times, Associated Press, Reuters, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, etc.

They no longer practice any sense of ethics, objectivity, or fairness that has been the bedrock of America%u2019s core values. They are nothing more than Advocates.

Shaving points in sports is wrong, lying under oath is wrong, selling the poor houses they can%u2019t afford is wrong, biased slanted reporting and polling is wrong!

Americans are ill served if they cannot rely on impartial fair representation of both sides of all issues in plain, unemotional, and unedited fashion, however boring it may be.

Without this, the better team doesn''t win, instead they are appointed.

Good ole fashioned honesty is taking a real hit this election

No BALANCE. No Biden problems.

Yellow Journalism is alive and well here at ABC.

Palin stuck to her talking points which should make the Republican proud. Now granted she had her on personal debate since she avoided actually answering the questions that the moderator asked her. One thing for sure though she has to all the flirty "Pretty Girl" body language and mannerisms down do to a science! Good Grief if I saw enough "Knowing winks and lip licking" to last me a life time! No wonder the President of Pakiestan was "Feeling her up" at the United Nations! I can see the headlines now. "International insident occurs when the leader of Dubi assumes from VP Palin''s "Flirty Winks" that she is asking to be a member of his harem!" I am not Republican expert but I am certain that Macain could have found a more qualified woman then this! I definately do not want her prepresenting women who have worked hard to achieve their postions without the use of their "Womanly wiles"

I notice that the right wing, book burning, simple minded, goose steppers always accuse the mainstream media of slanted, biased reporting. Funny how the things they don''t agree with (or understand) are always purported to be evil and wrong. They are even sheep in their criticisms uncapable of original thought. McCain is a liar and a fraud and Palin is in over her head.

I felt Palin set women back 50 years last night. Does she feel she has to wink and flirt with the camera to get people to pay attention to her? Did any one keep track of how many times she said GOSH *** or DOG GONE IT ANY WAY or HECK. Does everybody in Alaska talk like that or does she think the rest of us are a bunch of country bumkins that don''t know a DOG GONE THING ANYWAY. I have a hard time imagining her sitting down to have serious talks with foreign leaders using this kind of double negative language. If she didn''t want to answer a question or couldn''t answer, because she didn''t know the answer, she would want to go back to the energy issue. Is that because that is the only experience she has and very little at that? Our country is in trouble and we need people in office who are going to take our situation seriously, not just now but in the future. I''m sorry, if this is the best the republican party has to offer then they are in trouble or they really do think the American people are stupid.

Scene continues with mccain on the TV saying: Palin did such a great job last night I feel bad for my old, old friend, Joe Biden. (Mccain giggles real hard)

Scene 2: Camera pans out and cuts to Tina Fey as Palin that same morning in bed wearing nothing but her glasses and giggling real hard (with the TV on in the backgroungd listening to Mccain) and with a big wink, says: Hey, can I call you Joe? amd the camera widens even more to show a character playing Joe Biden in the same bed and says, Lets play that Maverick game again!.

It%u2019s a sad, sad day in journalism when journalist use their networks for platforms to advance what would seem like their indorsement of a particular party%u2019s campaign. Fox News Network has continually and consistantly supported Senator McCain%u2019s campaign through unbalanced interviews. Guest on the network (more particularly Hannity and Colmes) that are pro McCain are interviewed in abundance not the case with Obama supporters, if you are going to report on a political subject as important as this there needs to be balance. Also the many, many crafty comments that try to employ negativity aimed at the Obama campaign border on the line of being crasp and unsavory. I have yet to observe fairness in journalism by the Fox News Network and at this stage of the game don%u2019t anticipate any. Therefore, I am asking viewers of a continued boycott of this network%u2019s inability to provide viewers with fair and unbiased reporting and if you tire of this type of journalism I ask that you join and get on board also, that we may end this type of reporting by Fox News. $300 million to prove to the Iraqis that the surge was successful...

#####

U.S. to Fund Pro-American Publicity in Iraqi Media

By Karen DeYoung and Walter Pincus
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, October 3, 2008; A01

The Defense Department will pay private U.S. contractors in Iraq up to $300 million over the next three years to produce news stories, entertainment programs and public service advertisements for the Iraqi media in an effort to "engage and inspire" the local population to support U.S. objectives and the Iraqi government.

The new contracts -- awarded last week to four companies -- will expand and consolidate what the U.S. military calls "information/psychological operations" in Iraq far into the future, even as violence appears to be abating and U.S. troops have begun drawing down.

No need to ask as I don''t want to be among the grossly misinformed. Several polls taken last year showed Fox news viewers were the most likely to be misinformed about current events and politics.

If I am in public places that have it on, such as restaurants or hotel lobbies, I asked if the station could be changed to a REAL news channel.

The "surge" is touted as this "wonderful and successful undertaking" when in REALITY, it was to bring our forces to the level they should have been in THE FIRST PLACE. The Iraqi''s were killing our soldiers because our ranks were so thin. I am NOT A SUPPORTER OF THIS ILLEGAL WAR, but to send in ANY of our soldiers without protection is simply retarded. Did I mention how much I hate Bush/Cheney for starting this d.a.m.n. war?

Technically, Obama never said he''d meet with Ahmadinejad. The leader of Iran is Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It is a stretch. But, it''s the truth that Obama never said he''d meet with Ahmadinejad.

Now, there''s this:
"McClellan didn''t say anything opposite of that. The counterinsurgency strategy going into Afghanistan, clearing, holding, rebuilding, the civil society and the infrastructure can work in Afghanistan."
Sarah Palin

First of all, she didn''t know the general''s name. And, the actual General in charge in Afghanistan that Palin didn''t know the name of, McKiernan, said, %u201CI don''t want the military to be engaging the tribes,%u201D %u201CIt wouldn''t take much to go back to a civil war.%u201D

So, with this knowledge, there is no clearing and holding that will be taking place if the military won''t be engaging with the tribes.

Lastly, McKiernan said this: %u201CThe word I don''t use for Afghanistan is "surge"".

Oh, and Palin said troop levels in Iraq are down to pre-surge levels which is a bald-faced lie.

CBS and it''s biased reporting.

When Palin sends her son off to Iraq she is criticized for exploiting him for political gain. She gave a short speech at his send off ceremony. She is the Governor of the state and is involved in the Alaskan National Guard.

Biden gives a speech at his son''s send off ceremony and it is all good. And NO COMMENT section is allowed to that article. Why not CBS????

Double standards there?

Everyone seems to be concerned about Sara Palin and her credentials to be a VP. My question is does Arnold as an actor have the credentials to be Governor of California? Seems to me we had an actor Ronald Regan as President. Wasn%u2019t he a great President? Why not a hockey mom as VP? She is probably closer to the issues needed to be dealt with than those so called seasoned and corrupted individuals in Washington DC. Why is every one so hard on Sarah? Also, wasn%u2019t it Ross Perot who said all it takes to lead is to surround your self with those who are in the KNOW and use them to make things happen!!! It seems Sarah has proven to be able to do that and has proven to be a good leader in Alaska as well as an administrator. As far as Sarah being scripted isn%u2019t every President scripted? Perhaps maybe even 90 percent of the time. Doesn%u2019t everyone see President Bush reading from a script on television on a daily basis? Who do you think writes his script? Did anybody watch the movie DAVE? Martin, Democrat from Alaska

asfinest, your question was "why is everyone so hard on Sarah?" My response would be taken from the archives of one of her heroes, Harry S. Truman, who said, in response to a question, "I don''t give em he*l, I just tell them the truth, and they think it is he*l." No one is being hard on Sarah, they are just telling the truth and Sarah''s people think it''s hard. Of course, Sarah could just be taking it hard.

Quoting akfinest-
" My question is does Arnold as an actor have the credentials to be Governor of California?" Answer: NO

".. actor Ronald Regan as President. Wasn%u2019t he a great President?" Answer: NO

"Why not a hockey mom as VP?" Answer: For that very reason, NO

".. Why is every one so hard on Sarah?" Answer:Because she has absolutely no credibity considering the ''scripted'' lies she spouts.
".. Ross Perot .. It seems Sarah has proven to be able to do that and has proven to be a good leader in Alaska as well as an administrator." Answer: That is very debatable.

"As far as Sarah being scripted isn%u2019t every President scripted? ..President Bush?" Answer:Didn''t vote for Bush either because his scripting was lies as well.

"Who do you think writes his script? Did anybody watch the movie DAVE? Martin, Democrat from Alaska"
Answer: There ya go, sticking your head in the sand of a movie. Sounds akin to what someone told me the other day as their reasoning for voting for McLame.."Do you like NASCAR? All the fans like him, so I am gonna vote for him too.." Yea and we should all eat garbage, a million flies can''t be wrong.

Sometimes the answers to the charges lead to worse consequences than accepting the charge, even if it is less than true. For example, when Biden argued, more than once, that the U.S. spends more in Iraq in one month than the U.S. has spent in Afghanistan in its entire time, it isn''t exactly the truth. The first figure uses "combat" money and the second ONLY reconstruction money. In Joe Six Pack lingo, that''s apples to oranges. Quoting, "In July, the State Department reported that, since fiscal year 2001, the United States has spent $17.2 billion on security in Afghanistan and $1.3 billion on "governance, rule of law, and human rights" efforts." With a $10 billion a month figure for Iraq, obviously Biden errs in his charge. Now, if Sarah argues that Biden is being less than accurate, Biden now has an opening evident to all Americans, namely that all that $18.5 billion has bought in the form of security is a litany of increasing Allied casualties, generals'' statements about the desperate need for more troops, etc. Either way, it isn''t a good argument for Sarah and her water carrier to be making. This may be called having to choose between two equally bad horns of a dilemma. It isn''t something that Sarah can wink away.

In honor of Joe Biden''''s planned visit to my High School in Virginia, I have just made a donation to the Obama Biden Campaign.

I am tired of the trickle down policies of Ronald Reagan, and the Bushes, that John McCain would like to carry on. I am tired of the Republican party trying to scare people with the threat of higher taxes. The real picture is that the Republicans have given us record budget deficits. We finally had a budget surplus under Bill Clinton, and now George Bush 2 with the republican congress has obliterated it. I am voting for the change America needs that Obama and Biden will bring us.

I urge others to stand up to the fanatical lies, and hate mongering that the republicans are trying to spread, and find out the truth for yourself. We can see who the real elitists are, the ones with too many houses and cars to keep up with. Virginians, Floridians, and others across this country, it is time to turn our government back into one that actually means something.

How about some real honesty? Also, I didn''t hear the media get all over Biden, when he "choked up," like they did when Hillary did. Also, how is it that Biden is such a foreign relations expert, when he got so many details about Israel and Iran wrong? Biden is a fraud. According to NARAL he has voted only 37% of the time in support of pro-choice legislation and Clarence Thomas wouldn''t be on the Supreme Court, if Biden had been doing his job properly. He cut off testimony of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on Thomas before other women who were ready to corroborate Anita Hill''s testimony could speak. (Check out "Strange Justice.") Even the restaurant he talked about in the debates, doesn''t exist and may never have existed....He just makes it up as he goes....and people talk about being scared of Palin. She is competent and honest, unlike Biden.

Politicians stretch the truth and lie by omission, that is just a fact of campaigning.
But, one thing in particular is troublesome about Palin''s performance in the debates. She refused to honor the rules of the Debate, they had agreed that she would. If she will not honor the simple rules set up by the debate commission, how on earth can she possibly be expected to honor the rules set down by the constitution? Possibly the same way Bush has and the way she did in the debate - simply ignore them, and proceed to do as she likes.

THIS SOUNDS LIKE BUSH MCAIN GOP COVER UP hitting news today By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: October 3, 2008

The Alaska Supreme Court accepted an emergency appeal from six state lawmakers who seek to halt an investigation into abuse-of-power accusations against Gov. Sarah Palin before the findings are released next week. The independent investigator conducting the inquiry plans to turn over his conclusions by Friday to the Legislative Council, which authorized it. The six Republicans, who are not on the council, say the inquiry is being manipulated to damage Ms. Palin, the Republican nominee for vice president, before the Nov. 4 election. The court scheduled oral arguments for Wednesday. The investigator is looking into whether Ms. Palin and others pressured the public safety commissioner to fire a state trooper who was involved in a contentious divorce from Ms. Palin%u2019s sister and then fired the commissioner when he would not dismiss the trooper.

With regards to her claim on the pipeline and what fact checkers found "The fact is she''s not quite "building." Only a tiny part, for show, has been built.
Even the original letting of the construction contracts seems to be a little shady. What further complicates the deal is that all the land that is necessary for the pipeline''s construction is not quite in the bag yet. Added to this the stipulation that TransCanada receives a huge compensation if the pipeline should not become feasible.
Yes, you could say Palin is "competent and honest"
The facts of this pipeline are easily found on Wikipedia

This board proves it, Obama''s biggest hurdle to winning is the republican racism. On issues, there is no possibility as sane person would support continuing the Bush policies.
But, republicans have done a great job of netting the racist and homophobes who are always motivated by their hate.

However, we are not interviewing her for that kind of advertising gig. We are interviewing her for the somber job of rebuilding the United States. The qualifications for the two separate jobs are starkly different.

Inherited a deficit & now has a surplus budget... connects with average real life ppl & has lived what she is promising to do for the Country.... I fear you are right, because she has her eyes set on being president of the United States and I don''t believe Sarah Palin will allow anything to deter her from seeking that position ~ not lack of knowledge, not lack of experience, not lack of ethics, not John McCain, not the Republican party. Whatever it takes , I''m sure that that little "gee whiz" "goll ***" winking little pit bull will go to any extreme to get what she wants.
I guess the rest of us are just going to have to be ultra vigilant if we want someone of character to occupy the oval office.

In the Interest of fair reporting, it would have made this report a bit more credible if they had included at least one OF THE NUMEROUS misrepresentations POSED BY JOE BIDEN. Especially considering they outnumbered Palin''s by ratio of six to one!!!

Those who say that Govenor Palin has done great as a govenor must not have been paying attention to the facts about the Troopergate investigations, the fact that she lied about telling congress "thanks but no thanks to the bridge to nowhere", and her efforts to avoid having shady behavior be transparent by using personal email acoounts to communicate Alaska business.

She not only did not tell congress no on the bridge, but she accepted the $233 million in pork barrel funding to use on other projects when she recognized the bridge to Katchikan was becoing too much of a political embarrassment. Also, she accepted, on behalf of Alaska, $135 million in pork barrel funds to build a bridge between Anchorage and a point near Wasilla.

mydiatribe,

You use the right handle. You probably believe the only time you are getting fairly reported information is if it comes from such right wing hacks as rush Limbaugh, Bill O''Rielly or Sean Hannity. Anyone who accepts Fox''s claim that it presents fair and balanced reporting is ignorant.

It is astonishing that there are people who accept the mediocre performance of Govenor Palin in the VP debate as a success. Even the respondents who graded her on the report card posted on the Fox News website graded her performance as a D, while they graded Senator Biden''s as a B.

This is regardong your interview with Sarah Palin which is closed for comment:

A friend of mine saw me years ago on TV when I was being interviewed by you, Katie Couric, as a man on the street in Washington, DC near Union Station at the beginning of your career. He told me about it, because we were both people he knew and who both attended Washington Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia. So I have every reason, knowing we come from the same school and county, to wish you all the success in the world. However, I am so disappointed how you, Katie, handled the Palin interview. I describe it as mean-spirited; a friend of mine calls it predatory. Quit trying to please your liberal friends and get back to simple human values. Be fair. You have allowed yourself to become part of the demise of honest journalism in this country. Don''t you remember when everyone was counting you out as CBS''s anchor. Now, to court the favor of your critics you seem to be treating Sarah Palin in the same unfair way you were treated when you first came on board aa CBS anchor. Shame on you, Katie. I am disapointed.
