RSC Still Floating Bailout Alternatives
(The Politico)
Members of the conservative Republican Study Committee continued their push for an alternative bailout proposal Wednesday, a signal that many conservatives are not yet on board with the revised proposal.
RSC Chairman Rep. Jeb Hensarling sent a letter Wednesday morning to fellow RSC members to discuss alternatives.
“The Senate will attempt to pass that legislation and then leave town, putting the House in a take-it-or-leave-it position on Thursday,” Hensarling wrote in the letter.
“The RSC is proposing a number of alternatives and continues to fight for a legislative package that would solve the credit crisis, protect taxpayers, and not fundamentally alter our nation’s free market system.”
Hensarling said the group will likely meet Thursday to discuss “the lay of the land.”
However, Hensarling may have tipped his hand a bit in the letter, signaling that perhaps some RSC members were open to the revised proposal.
“Judging by the number of emails I have received over the last few days, there still seems to be some confusion about whether the RSC still needs an alternative,” he wrote.
