(CBS)  CBS News anchor Katie Couric spent much of Sept. 29 behind the scenes of the McCain-Palin campaign speaking with Sen. John McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. This is an unedited transcript of the interview portions broadcast on Sept. 30.

Katie Couric: Do you consider yourself a feminist?

Sarah Palin: I do. I'm a feminist who believes in equal rights and I believe that women certainly today have every opportunity that a man has to succeed and to try to do it all anyway. And I’m very, very thankful that I've been brought up in a family where gender hasn't been an issue. You know, I've been expected to do everything growing up that the boys were doing. We were out chopping wood and you’re out hunting and fishing and filling our freezer with good wild Alaskan game to feed our family. So it kinda started with that. With just that expectation that the boys and the girls in my community were expected to do the same and accomplish the same. That's just been instilled in me.

Couric: What is your definition of a feminist?

Palin: Someone who believes in equal rights. Someone who would not stand for oppression against women.

Couric: Where do you stand on the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act?

Palin: I’m absolutely for equal pay for equal work. The Ledbetter pay act - it was gonna turn into a boon for trial lawyers who, I believe, could have taken advantage of women who were many, many years ago who would allege some kind of discrimination. Thankfully, there are laws on the books, there have been since 1963, that no woman could be discriminated against in the workplace in terms of anything, but especially in terms of pay. So, thankfully we have the laws on the books and they better be enforced.

Couric: The Ledbetter act sort of lengthens the time a woman can sue her company if she's not getting equal pay for equal work. Why should a fear of lawsuits trump a woman's ability to do something about the fact that women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. And that's today.

Palin: There should be no fear of a lawsuit prohibiting a woman from making sure that the laws that are on the books today are enforced. I know in a McCain-Palin administration we will not stand for any measure that would result in a woman being paid less than a man for equal work.

Couric: Why shouldn’t the Ledbetter act be in place? You think it would result in lawsuits brought by women years and years ago. Is that your main problem with it?

Palin: It would have turned into a boon for trial lawyers. Again, thankfully with the existing laws we have on the books, they better be enforced. We won't stand for anything but that. We won't stand for any discrimination in the workplace - that there isn't any discrimination in America.

Couric: Do you think the coverage of you been sexist?

Palin: No. I don’t. It's obvious there are some double standards here. You know, in terms of what the media has been doing. But I think that's more attributable to the Washington media elite not knowing who I am and just asking a whole lot of questions. Not so much based on gender, though. But based on just the fact that I’m not part of the Washington herd.

Couric: Having said that, do you think it would be sexist not to question your credentials and your policy positions.

Palin: It would be sexist if the media were to hold back and not ask me about my experience, my vision, my principles, my values. You're right.

Couric: If that's the case, why haven’t you been more accessible to reporters?

Palin: I am so happy to talk to reporters. My life is an open book, happy to do it and very happy for more opportunities to do so.

Couric: Have you been pushing the campaign to sort of "Free Sarah Palin?"

Palin: The campaign knows that I am an open book. I mean, obviously is out there for God and everyone to judge my voting record, actions that I've taken as an administrator, as an executive, as a business owner, as a mom. My record is out there and my life is out there.

Couric: But having said that, reporters out there are extremely frustrated, as I’m sure you know, that they haven't been able to talk to you more, question you more, challenge you more on certain things.

Palin: I think this may be a little bit more about a campaign of reform, where just because maybe someone in the media elite hasn't had the access that maybe they're demanding, because we're running the campaign the way that we believe will best result in a good result for America - and that is a victory for John McCain. And maybe some are kind of put off by that. But that's all part of no more politics as usual; no more business as usual. I'm out there talking to the American people, those who I so dearly love and care about. I'm talking to them in these rallies that are attracting 20 - 30,000-plus people. I'm doing these rope-lines. I'm talking to every individual American that I can, in every hour that I have in my day. That's who I will be serving, that's who I'm connecting with today.

Couric: Governor Palin, almost every expert say it will take about ten years for domestic drilling to have an impact on consumers. So isn't the notion of "drill, baby, drill" a little misleading to people who think this will automatically lower their gas prices and quickly?

Palin: And it's why we should have started ten years ago tapping into domestic supplies that America is so rich in. Alaska has billions of barrels of oil and hundreds of trillions of cubic feet of clean, green natural gas onshore and offshore. Should have started doing it ten years ago but better late than never. We need to make sure that our nation's taking those steps to become energy independent.

Of course, ramping up supplies domestically is a key to that. But so is weaning ourselves off the hydrocarbons. We have got to get on board with the alternative fuel. John McCain has some great plans there. Also tapping into the nuclear, the clean coal to biomass, geothermal, tides, waves, all those things that we have as alternative energy sources, it's gotta be an all-of-the-above approach to energy independence. We cannot keep going down the road that we're going on now. And that's circulating nearly $700 billion, American dollars, into other countries, ramping up, boosting up their economy, decimating our own, not when we have the solution here domestically.

Couric: And we'll talk about alternative sources in a moment.

John McCain: Could I just mention one other thing about this. I disagree with the 10-year figure. I talked to the independent petroleum producers who said, "Look, we can do some of this in a matter of months. We can do a lot more of it … in a matter of just a short period of time." And it's …

Couric: Don't they have a vested interest in saying that, though, Senator?

McCain: Well, they have the capability. And I don't think they're not telling the truth. I mean, they're the ones who are out there doing it. But I agree … with Governor Palin. What's the moral of this story? We should have done it a long time ago. But the point is that it also does have an effect on the futures, on the price of a barrel of oil. And many disagree with that. But I know that when they think that there's, when anybody market forces believe there's gonna be an increase in the supply then obviously the price of that commodity goes down, whether it's oil or any other supply and demand situation. And finally one other thing: India and China are drawing on basically a finite resource in the world. So we may have an additional supply to help us bridge between our dependence on oil and natural particularly oil … and the future, which is alternate energy.

Palin: Yeah.

Couric: Gov. Palin, I know you'd like to see drilling take place in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And Sen. McCain, you oppose this. You call it, quote, "one of the most pristine and beautiful parts of the world."

McCain: Uh huh.

Couric: Who's right?

McCain: Did you expect two mavericks to agree on - (laughter) to agree on everything? Look, I … we just have, we'll be talking more and more about this issue. We do agree on the off-shore drilling and other means of limiting our dependence on foreign oil. But for us to agree on everything would make us, I think, a little boring. You can … say a lot about us, but we're anything but boring.

Couric: Who's gonna cave on this issue?

Palin: I don't think there's any need to characterize anything as caving. We'll continue to work together on this issue. And that issue is domestic supplies of energy being tapped, flowing into very, very, very hungry markets across our U.S. And we are on the same page there in seeking solutions to reach that goal.

Couric: At peak production, governor …

McCain: I wanna go and moose-hunt with her. And then we can, maybe we can have a look.

Couric: Experts say it'll take almost 20 years and it would …to achieve peak production … in ANWR. And it would still only cut foreign oil dependence by about two percent and only for a little while … so is it really worth …

Palin: Yeah, I don't know who the …

Couric: The risk?

Palin: …experts are who say that it would take 20 years. As the governor of an energy-producing state, we're supplying 16, 17 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy coming from my state. And as the former chairman of the Interstate Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, the geologists, the petroleum engineers whom I speak with are saying it can be done a lot quicker than 20 years from now. And, remember ANWR is a 2,000-acre plot that's in the midst of 21 million acres. That's not where the supply of domestic energy sources is, though, necessarily. I mean, that's not the be-all, end-all. Offshore is where the supply of energy is. And we'll tap into that.

Well golly, she sure was her usual non-answering self. They made McCain baby-sit her this time so that he could protect her if she got in trouble. How patronizing.

Oh boy, Gwen is going yo have her hands full.

I think it''s clear who Couric is planning on voting for in November. It''s so obvious by how much badgering she''s done to Palin in her two interviews with her. Some of these questions don''t have any clear answers, and I think she knows this. I read between the lines, and I see an HONEST person. She''s not going to say something, one way or the other, that she doesn''t COMPLETELY believe in. If she''s going to be that tough on Palin, she should be equaly as tough with Biden and with Obama. This is ridiculous. I am hoping others are smart enough to see what the media is doing. I am proud of Palin, in her honesty. I am ashamed of our liberal media, who seem to make fun of people who have the guts to stand up for what''s moral. Palin''s right, we SHOULD stand up more for the sanctity of life - - whether that''s popular or not, I don''t care. It''s the right thing. As far a evolution and christianity being taught in our schools - - Palin''s absolutely right: they''re both theories. If you don''t think so, are you brave enough to say that if there is a possibility that a God exists? I''m not. Don''t be so concieted.

Dear Sarah, you are about as dumb as a bag of rocks.

Your vague, inept, pointless, weird, incorrect, adlibs are sad excuses for answers.

We all know you don''t have an original thought in your head.

What I wish Katie asked you, when you said your story was an open book, would have taken hours.

Why do you support killing wolves?
Why did you promise to cooperate in firing Walt Monegan and then changed your mind when you got tapped for being VP?
IS it true you gave Johnny Oldman a woodie?
IS it true your husband is a co-govenor?
Why did 2000 people rally in opposition to you on Saturday?

I have hundreds more.. lets chat over tea and a wolfburger. Oh, I''m sorry, you just slaugher them so you can kill more moouse. Silly me.

You will be slaughtered yourself on Thursday. You won''t have any help on stage, they won''t let Johnny Old be there with you. And they know you''ll likely try to wear an earpiece to get cognigent answers, although even those will be McCainized.

And is it just me, but does your pal, Johnny Old only run ads that attack Obama? Obama runs ads that state his policy without even mentioning the old codger.

You are sad. Go back to Alaska and face your constituents. Then come back in 8 years.

Okay. I don''t know what happened to my previous comment, and I think this site is biased, or it would have gone through. It''s so obvious who Couric is voting for in October. I''m ashamed of her interview of Palin. It wasn''t so much about what she can do for our country, as it was a liberal nit-picking on Palin. Why is she asking Palin, several times, what her stance is on the morning after pill or abortion? Palin made it clear that she is for sanctifying life, that should be enough of an answer. There are no clear cut answers in the questions that she gave, and Couric knows this. I am hoping others are smart enough to see through all of the biasly framed questions. I am proud of Palin for standing up for her beliefs in front of media that makes fun of moral choices. The media should be ashamed. I believe there is a God out there, and that he is very disappointed in our media for how they make fun of people standing up for right choices. Also, with the questions on Evolution and Creationism being taught in public schools: They ARE both theories, where we are sitting (at least). To say that they aren''t is to be very conceited. You better hope that there isn''t a God out there, because if there is you''ve put yourself above him.

Lewis, if you think her questions were tough, you need to get a grip. She softballed her over and over and Sarah couldn''t even answer the simplist of questions, choosing to circle the question with inane and mostly off-topic answers that never answered the question.

Wait til Gwen Ifill gets her and actually asks questions that demand actual answers.

And why, if katie is sooooooo tough, why doesn''t she face the easy news media? the NY Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune.

Oh, how we need Tim Russert. He''d make it all make sense.. And why did your boy, Johnny Old skip Letterman???? Duh.. of course, we know.. He would have been hammered by Letterman. Why don''t you go visit Dave. He''s not even a journalist.. Oh wait, you are!! I totally forgot. Oh wait, you were a beauty pageant girl, a sports reporter, and a mayor who hired an assistant to do all the work. Had to get more reading in?

Just sad.. Fortunately, Johnny Olds blunders this week has caused his poll numbers to start sliding! And trust me, your schtick might work with a small number of country folk, but the people in NY, DC, LA and other metropolitan areas won''t buy your country girl bs..

You''re about to be toasted..

Dead debater walkin.

The vice president can be a voting member in the senate, where the legislative branch makes the laws

Hair on Palins hair hides the transmitters and power supply.. She hasn''t got an original thought to share and her speech at the Conv was 100% written for her..

Ask her questions about it, she won''t have a clue.. but what''s different about anything else she does?

Rather interesting.. An article elsewhere said Palin is practicing at McOld''s ranch for the debate, with?

Well, how about 3 of Bush''s old advisers..

So, what happened to Johnny McOld''s maverick ways? He''s such a maverick, he''s using W''s people to teach Palin everything she needs to know?

How huge is this irony? He wants change, and reform, yet her teachers are Bushites..

This is just soooo funny.

Too bad Katie didn''t keep pressing on what newspapers and magazines Palin read...Palin says "all of them," and then goes off on how Alaska is part of the good ol'' USA. My Alaska-native friend says "Alaska''s like another country." I''ll bet Palin can''t name five magazines she''s honestly read on a regular basis prior to being asked to be VP candidate.

Why is CBS withholding some of the interview clips when Sarah Palin failed to name some of the Supreme Court Cases?

American people deserve a right to learn as much as they can regarding the people who are seeking the highest office in the country

I am not voting for McCain, but I will tell you your interview tactics Katie were a sickening embarrassment and your attempt to belittle Paulin were blatant and obvious. You are a sickening excuse for a woman. I feel like vomiting. How jealous are you? It seems as though you are oozing with jealousy for Paulin and your power hunger is obvious as your career moves and tactics show. Your jealousy is an embarrassment for all women. You should be removed from the forefront of American journalism. You should seek forgiveness. Ugh, what an embarrassment.

I''m a democrat and I can tell you I can see the bias. I am not afraid to say it. I may have a lot to disagree with when it comes to McCain/Palin, but when I see the media acting like this it makes me sick. It shows me how much people want to be told how to think rather than do the grunt work of sifting through all the facts ON BOTH SIDES whilst reading between the lines. It''s much easier to throw yourself to one party and act like a friggen cheerleader and believe all the bias *** and lies about book banning etc, isn''t it.

Um, okay, Wendy? Sweetheart? Learn to read because spelling Palin ''Paulin'' is the first signal of your alarmingly obvious ignorance. Secondly, Katie Couric would NEVER be jealous of a woman as dense as Sarah Palin, that''s a joke. As a woman, the only thing embarrassing about this interview taking place is that Palin is only in the limelight because she''s a woman and McCain was wanting to tap the female vote. Why else would he choose a woman he had met only once and only talked with on the phone for 15 minutes? It''s disgusting, and Katie Couric SHOULD BE pointing out the flaws in what a 71 year old man (who, let''s not kid ourselves, is likely to not survive a term if he is *god forbid* elected) is choosing to be his backup. It would be irresponsible not to.

Britnee your fear mongering about a 72 (not 71) year old guy not likely to survive is B.S. Sorry "sweetie", but even his mother is still alive and well. If you don''t like them, that''s one thing, but stop with the ***. Palin is in the limelight as a woman in the same respect as Barack is for being black. Either way, history is going to be made this election.

Terribly sorry I don''t keep up with his birthdays. And as much as I''ve seen his mother, I''ve never seen her do anything more than wave (she might be doing more, I''m just saying I haven''t seen it) not to mention that I''m sure her life expectancy, being a woman, not being tortured for years, and not having cancer as far as I know, is longer than his. Also, Barack is in the limelight because he is a brilliant politician and the answer that our country needs, not because he''s black.

I am so sorry, i thought the posts would show up on the last page and not the first. SO sorry for them showing up over and over. I also appologize for misspelling a name. I have a disability in my hands and my typing is often affected. I think the entire debate and fight between the dems and republicans is irrelevant and set as a stage to divert the American publics attention. There is a huge elephant in the room. Watch "Freedom to Fascism" and visit the campaign for Liberty website, then question who is uneducated. I may misspell and hit publish like a fool, but believe me, I pray you educate yourself about the dire situation America is in and I pray you take great responsibility to fix it. ;-)

It amazes me that people believe what they read from organizations on the internet. If you actually went to the EIA''s own website and looked up the numbers you would easily see that 263,595 (thousands) barrels were produced within the land mass of Alaska AND another 91,824 offshore in Alaska giving Alaska 19.22947% of the Crude Oil Production of the US. I think this is the ALMOST 20% of the US she was referring to that the left liberals and even FACTCHECK.ORG seem to twist into a falsehood.

=====================================================
PALIN: As the governor of an energy-producing state, we''''re supplying 16, 17 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy coming from my state.

THIS IS FALSE. FROM FACTCHECK.ORG -

Alaska''''s share of domestic energy production was 3.5 percent, according to the official figures kept by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

He has released enough medical history plus all the drugs he takes. That assessment is easily made. Even if he was actually dying of a serious cancer at this moment is life expectancy would be 5 years or so. So, based on what we know and the tables, I estimate 92 years. 8 years would be no biggie. The point is that people make ludicrous comments about McCain''s life expectancy being so short. No one in reasonable health at 72 has a life expectancy of only 8 years. Do your own research.

We have come to a very sorry state when the country holds its breath waiting to see if someone who could possibly be president possesses the requisite knowledge to do the job.

Recently on the Chris Matthews show, David Brooks said that Palin may be able to work up to mediocrity.

...Is this what the United States has come to that in such a complicated world we are willing to accept someone who has to work up to mediocrity? What happend to an expectation of excellence?

Katie Couric needs to remember how awful and inexperienced she was when she became the anchor for CBS Evening News. Now that she is so "experienced" she should leave behind her "gothca questions" and biased attitudes. Maybe CBS should start a new game show called "Pop Quiz" with Katie as the star.

Prompted in part by the selection of Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential candidate, attention is focusing on McCain''s history of skin cancer and the need for more information about his medical records.

"I don''t see anything wrong with opening up the discussion," said Ronald Bronow, former chief of dermatology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. "What we want to know is, what stage is this melanoma? Particularly with the prospect of the vice president becoming the president... If you are an objective physician, you have to be concerned about this."

With just weeks before election day, McCain''s campaign says it has released all of the information needed to make a thorough assessment of his health, and then some.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN''s medical correspondent who was one of only a handful of reporters allowed into the review, summarized :

"We were given three hours to go over 1,200 pages of records. That is a lot to go through. It was very sort of cloak and dagger and I''m sure they had their reasons. Given that I had my medical training, I was able to hone in on what it thought was important more quickly. But the pages weren''t numbered, so I had no way of knowing what was missing...

Famed conservative columnist George Will told a gathering of Senate aides on Monday that Gov. Sarah Palin is "obviously" not prepared to assume the presidency if necessary.

Appearing at a Senate Press Secretaries Association reception at the Cornerstone Government Affairs office, Will offered a harsh assessment of John McCain''s running mate.

Palin is "obviously not qualified to be President," he remarked, describing her interview on CBS Evening News with Katie Couric as a "disaster."

Sarah Palin''s comment about hearing Joe Biden since the 2nd grade was certainly a dig - ok. But, it was weird that rather than back up her claim with a comment like, "yea, Joe Biden is old politics" or something, she dove right in to Katie Couric''s perspective that it was a remark about his age - certainly hypocritical considering 72 year old McCain is the top of her ticket. She just doesn''t have the level of thinking on her feet that a person needs to be effective at this level of politics. Worse, she''s getting cocky and angry, and she''s blaming the press for her inability to rise to the occasion. Her reaction to her blunders are as bad or worse than the blunders themselves - if that''s even possible.

This woman seemingly has an inability to answer questions honestly. Katie Couric has to badger her over and over to get a straight answer, and she STILL won''t simply answer.

"Do you believe man causes global warming?" NO - that''s Palin''s answer, and it''s been her answer before. She''s just not willing to say it outright.

Will you work to make abortion illegal, regardless of the circumstances?" YES - that''s Palin''s position, and her nonsense about respecting other''s choices is just that - nonsense.

How can anyone believe a word this woman says? I think the US deserves a woman president - but I''d like to see someone who has an iota of foreign policy and economic knowledge and one who can give a straight answer to a straight question...

The Palin Syndrome is a good way for us (the public part of public service) to think.

Please consider, for example:

Foreign policy requires responsibility.

Could Todd Palin slap her silly and take her where she belongs....Alaska?
As Don King would say, "Only in America, where such a dumb azz could be so close to being the President!"
Wake up people!
