(AP)  Russia and the United States have reached a deal to seek a new U.N. resolution on Iran, Britain's U.N. ambassador said Friday.

Ambassador John Sawers spoke before heading into a high-level meeting at U.N. headquarters of nations concerned with events in Pakistan.

After the meeting, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said the resolution will be introduced in the Security Council on Friday.

Western diplomats said the resolution would reaffirm three rounds of earlier U.N. sanctions to make clear that the process has not been dropped and that the council wants Iran to comply.

The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because details have not been made public.

The United States, Britain and France have been pressing for a new round of sanctions to step up pressure against Iran for its continuing refusal to suspend uranium enrichment as a prelude to talks on its nuclear program. But Russia and China objected to new sanctions.

The proposed new resolution appears to be a compromise - no new sanctions but a tough statement to Iran that Security Council resolutions are legally binding and must be carried out.

Russia on Tuesday scuttled high-level talks on imposing new sanctions on Iran that had been set for Thursday between the foreign ministers of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany, the key players in seeking an agreement with Iran. Even sanctions opponent China had agreed to the meeting.

U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, sought to downplay the move, saying the time wasn't right for the session. But they had previously said such a gathering would be useful and necessary to get a fourth Security Council sanctions resolution on Iran.

Iran insists its nuclear program is purely peaceful and designed to produce nuclear energy, but the U.S. and Europeans suspect Tehran is pursuing nuclear weapons.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Thursday that Tehran needs the ability to produce nuclear fuel because it cannot rely on other nations to supply enriched uranium to the Islamic regime's planned reactors.

Russia has multiple nuclear power plant contracts with Iran. These plants are currently under construction. Russia also has oil&gas contracts with Iran.

According to IranMania, Iran has become the top oil exporter to China, surpassing Saudi Arabia. Official Iranian statistics have stated that China s oil imports from Iran more than doubled in 2006. In June 2007, China reportedly imported around 567,000 barrels per day. Oil&Gas Insights July 2007

Reuters uk January 18, 2008 : " Iran has some awesome colleagues. Russia and China have become guardians of the Iranian economy. They don t put religion between business and political advantages. The US is sorely lacking in intelligent Foreign Policy. Hitler s Foreign Policy has been resurrected to serve the needs of an oil agenda and turn the US into the most disrespected and despised world power ".

swwils...Russia is NOT anti-Israeli...Lot''s of Russian-Jews in Israel....and...nobody understands the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust...better than Russia...probably the biggest disagreement that the Russians would have against the Iranian regime is in fact their ''denial'' of the Holocaust...the Russians in fact lost more people than even the Jews who lost 6 million...The Nazi''s killed no less than 24 million Russians....To the Russians the Holocaust was not a myth...it was a living nightmare....The last thing any Russian like to hear is that the holocaust was a myth.

The resolution is that there will be no new sanctions against Iran. The next resolution is that there will be no sanctions. That sneak attack in the middle of the night on August 7th cost the US a valuable ally.

George Bush has dispatched a young, new diplomat to Russia, a Sarah Palin from Alaska. Arriving in Moscow, Palin went straight into conference with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. "Could you please pull those, um, troops out of Georgia?", asked Ms. Palin. "There are so many of them and I just don''t think it''s necessary fot them to carry, oh, you know, guns. President Bush, you know the president of the United States?, he asked me to ask you about that. I''m a big, big reformer you know, so is there anything I can do to change, um, your, you know, mind?"

Here is where Sarah Palin got her Foreign Policy Experience with Russia.

For several periods during the Pleitocene Ice Age, enormous glaciers froze much of the earth''''''''''''''''s water, lowering the sea level by 300 feet. The resulting drop in the oceans exposed an Alaska-Siberia"land bridge" between 40,000 and 13,000 years ago, creating a natural migration route for America''''''''''''''''s original inhabitants.

This is what Sarah Palin was talking about ,, NOW IT GET IT !

"The proposed new resolution appears to be a compromise - no new sanctions but a tough statement to Iran that Security Council resolutions are legally binding and must be carried out."

The US has become the biggest hypocrite in the world. When we don''t like a UN resolution we claim the UN is neither a court or a binding legal entity. But when we want to use them as a stick, they suddenly are relevant and carry the full power of the law.

Saddam Hussein was letting UN weapons inspectors in to Iraq, undercutting Litl'' Bush and Darth Cheney''s plans. So he made something up, used the resolution for toilet paper but claimed it gave him the right to invade and off we went.

Somewhere in the last 50 years (and mostly in the last 8 years) the USA lost the moral high ground. Until we get that back, the rest of world will never respect as they have in the past.

W - Worst Ever!

You have no clue. The US has no reason to fear Iran. We could wipe them out completely in a matter of seconds and there is nothing anyone could do to stop us.

In any case, the real hazard is bioweapons.

The fact of that matter is that we are the problem and the greatest risk to us is among us.

uhhhhh....I wasn''t talking about the U.S.--I was talking about Israel, whom the Iranian president said, "should be wiped off the face of the earth."

You really have no idea what you''re talking about here, do you? Why don''t you find a Bush board and rant?

I wonder why? Is it because you have shown time and again that you can''''t be relied on?

Or that you lie?

Russia was going to supply the enriched uranium, under the UN proposal.

Here is an idea why not sit down and talk with them. It seems to me that eveyone wants there way.

In reality they may just want to be treated like people.

Just a though but then again that may make too much sense.

This nonsense of UN security council economic and sometimes military war against other - smaller - nations should be stopped.

It is simply wrong.

Well the question has to be politely asked, is this fear based on real intelligence, or just another ''weapons of mass destruction'' fear?
