The first debate between John McCain and Barack Obama, scheduled for tonight, remained in limbo last night after the presidential candidates left a White House meeting without a deal on a $700 billion economic rescue plan.
Democrats immediately blamed McCain for disrupting the effort at compromise, saying his decision to suspend his campaign and return to Washington shifted the klieg lights of the White House contest to the tense and delicate congressional negotiations.
Those discussions, which had appeared promising early in the day, culminated in the late-afternoon meeting held by President Bush. But instead of producing a joint statement of success, McCain and Obama slipped out of a gathering that those present described as contentious and unproductive.
"What this looked like to me was a rescue plan for John McCain for two hours," said an angry Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.), who had all but declared the deal done earlier in the day. "To be distracted for two to three hours for political theater doesn't help."
In interviews after the meeting, Obama pointed a finger at his rival for the faltering talks, saying on CNN that "when you start injecting presidential politics into delicate negotiations, you can actually inject more problems, rather than less."
His spokesman Bill Burton was more blunt, accusing McCain of turning "a national crisis into an occasion to promote his campaign. It's become just another political stunt, aimed more at shoring up the senator's political fortunes than the nation's economy."
In response, senior McCain adviser Steve Schmidt accused Obama of playing politics, saying the negotiations had been far from resolved and challenging the Democratic nominee to "publish the list of members of Congress who were going to vote for this. Because in reality, there is not a list of a majority of Democrats and Republicans who are willing to vote for it."
McCain said he is "hopeful" that a deal can be reached soon, despite opposition from many House Republicans who have consistently balked at the bailout cost and produced a far different proposal in the 11th hour yesterday.
"There are a variety of concerns, I think a lot of them have been satisfied," McCain said on ABC's "World News Tonight" after the meeting. "And I believe and I'm hopeful that we can satisfy all of them and move forward very quickly. They are aware of the urgency."
Obama and McCain both held out hope that they could still meet in Oxford, Miss., tonight for their long-scheduled first debate as they settled in to overnight in Washington. "I think he knows that I'm going to be there," Obama said in his own appearance on ABC. But McCain's campaign said that no travel decisions had been made as of last night.
"I understand how important this debate is and I am hopeful," McCain said on ABC News.
The independent Commission on Presidential Debates said yesterday that it is "moving forward" with its plans for the face-off.

See all 592 CommentsI am writing this message to inform people of the injustice being perpretrated by Fox News against Barack Obama. For the past two weeks there has been nothing but negative reporting against senator Obama by the Fox News network, which is unfair to listeners and the candidate. This networks seemingly biased opinions are not of interest to us viewers. My concern is that negative reporting like this will influence voters that are undecided of which candidate best express their wishes. I depend on these news stations for fair, accurate and just reporting regardless of the outcome whether it be a debate or any other current event and if that cant be accomplished I feel that it is grounds for that station (Fox News network) to be boycotted until they learn and understand that those types of injustices will not be tolerated. If anyone else can relate to the unfair reporting of Fox News I suggest that you join us in a boycott of this news station. PASS THIS MESSAGE ALONG.
McCain Backs Out of Debate in California
Bush Campaign Claims Senator is Abandoning State
Monday: February 28, 2000
"With new polls showing his campaign dead in the water among California Republicans, Arizona Senator John McCain has pulled out of a long time scheduled debate with Texas Govenor George Bush set for Thursday in Los Angeles.
Try to tell me McCain''s not pulling a political move, but instead putting his country first, during this "CRISIS", as he says.
Perhaps too...since the FBI is investagating the financial meltdown...McCain is afraid he may have to the relive the KEATING FIVE SCANDAL he was involved in while Govenor of Arizona in the 1980s
Or...maybe too he has realized the "Poor Judgement" in picking Sarah Piliar as his running mate!

I think the right wing would win the name calling contest pretty regularly in these posts. For some reason, they always feel threatened by logic and come out swinging. Sad.
Bush got involved in the effort personally, speaking out for the cause of reform: "Congress needs to pass legislation strengthening the independent regulator of government-sponsored enterprises like Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, so we can keep them focused on the mission to expand home ownership," he said in December. He even mentioned GSE reform in this year''s State of the Union address." -Washington Post

one indisputable fact is John McCain has actively been seeking reforms that may have prevented the current situation. Congressional records show McCain Co-sponsored S. 190 the Federal Housing Enterprise Act of 2005.
Hmmmmm I guess your wrong/lying as usual McCain is the one to help solve this problem. LOL s. 190 wad shot down by Dod and fellow Dems. Moron check your facts before you post.
Where was Obama and what was his position on Freddie/Fannie while McCain was calling for reform? Obama was the beneficiary of hundreds of thousands of dollars from the lobbyists McCain mentions in this speech, making him the #2 recipient of Fannie/Freddie money."

They don''t ask questions becaue the points are old, long-time disproven outright lies from Imarightwinglunatic.com, Limpbore, Shammity and the rest. The media has no business giving creedence to any of it.

And your country''s constitution affirms freedom of religion. Of course your party''s opinion of the Constitution is that it''s a GD piece of paper - so I guess in your mind, disallowing a man on the basis of his religion is fine. (not that any sane person thinks Obama''s any more Muslim than I am).
lol!

WILL THESE FRIENDS OF FLUFFOBAMA BE A PART OF HIS FOREIGN POLICY?
Yes... Be afraid- be Very Afraid.
His accusing McCain of stalling the bailout is hilarious also! The bailout is stalled because Nancy Pelosi and John Kerry want SOCIALIST control of their money...and they want not only their investments covered, but their EARNINGS! Where do the democraps and their screwed up Socialist leadership get off trying to blame everything on somebody else?

Are you in the same world as the rest of us? Six months ago, the primaries were still going, why would Obama have debated McCain when he wasn''t even the candidate yet. Didn''t you read the stories, it''s the right wing Republicans holding everything up by putting out a plan that Bush doesn''t like. Pity they couldn''t have shown such backbone over the last 8 years, then maybe the country wouldn''t be as big a disaster as it is now.
If Obama know how to FIX this problem and the is going on now then why is he not putting it before the fellow democrats? Is He and they hiding the possible FIX or are they just full of S_H_I_I_T.
Why is McCain running scared!
