Customers Told To Leave JetBlue Terminal Because Of Man With "Inert" WWII-Replica Explosives

(CBS/ AP)  The JetBlue terminal at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport was evacuated early Monday because of grenades found in a checked bag, a safety official said.

Chris White, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration, told CBS News that a man was carrying some "inert grenades." He added that the person in question has been identified and that the New York Port Authority Police were handling the incident, while a bomb squad investigated the items.

Later, a JetBlue spokeswoman said the package held replica WWII grenades that were used as paperweights. Scanners spotted them in a passenger's luggage, and the terminal was emptied around 7:50 a.m. The terminal reopened at about 8:15 a.m.

Aaron Lewis, a producer with CBS' The Early Show, was at JetBlue's terminal 6 when the evacuation order occurred. He reported that everyone calmly filed out of the building and went across the street. There was no "real sense of urgency here," Lewis said.

The incident happened as the airline celebrates the construction of its new home at JFK. The new terminal 5 is scheduled to go into service next month. It's connected to the landmark Trans World Airlines terminal, which was built in 1962 and closed when TWA ended operations in October 2001.

What a MORON! Yes the Airlines have become overly aggressive on some security issues but knowing that, this IDIOT didn''t think that a grenade (although a fake) would cause any problems. I agree that a hefty fine is in order. To the other comment regarding the question, are paper weights illegal cargo. I think they misses the whole point of this issue.
