  • CBS Evening News Where They Stand

The CBS Evening News provides an in-depth look at the issues facing the 44th president.

(CBS)  As news of the AIG bailout rocked Wall Street, both candidates were ready with new ads, both looking into the camera and both promising serious reform, CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews reports.

"I'll reform Wall Street and fix Washington," John McCain said in a new ad.

And Barack Obama said he would "end the 'anything goes' culture on Wall Street with real regulation."

McCain, in his latest stump speech, also promises to stop Wall Street abuses before they begin.

"Make sure these outrages, and they are outrages, never happen in the first place," McCain said.

Here are the facts: McCain admitted as the mortgage crisis was happening he never saw it coming. This was last December.

"So I'd like to tell you I did anticipate, but I have to give you straight talk, I did not," he said in Keane, N.H.

McCain also said he did know how to help homeowners without also bailing out speculators.

"But I can't come down yet and give you a specific, uh, solution because I don't claim to be smart enough," he said.

Obama meanwhile claims he saw the meltdown from the start and introduced a law to "stop mortgage transactions that promoted fraud, risk or abuse."

This claim is true. In fact, Obama introduced a 2006 bill trying to curb abusive lending.

But this was one year into his Senate career and the bill went nowhere. As for Obama's claim that McCain was nowhere …this claim is false.

The fact is, in March of 2005, McCain co-sponsored a bill to impose new oversight on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - but that bill also died.

Obama also charges that one of the godfathers of banking deregulation, Phil Gramm, is still one of McCains top advisers and a banking lobbyist.

He's the guy who said that we're just going through a "mental recession" and who called the United States of America a "nation of whiners."

Phil Gramm in fact was a lobbyist for investment bank UBS thru April of this year. He formally left McCain campaign in July.

McCain meanwhile has shifted gears on using taxpayer funds to prop up AIG.

Yesterday he was against all federal help, today he said the government was forced to protect people holding AIG insurance policies and retirement accounts.

8. WHEN PROOF CAME BY ONE OF HER EMPLOYEES, SHE DID NOT REPENT, OR ADMIT SHE LIED, SHE SAID SHE SEES HOW HER ACTIONS COULD BE SEEN AS BEING APART OF THESE CHARGES. SHE IS A LIAR. SHE IS NO PRESIDENT MATERIAL. SHE HAS NO INTEGRITY. THE MEDIA IS BIAS. YOU CAN ATTACK OBAMA, BUT NOT PALIN. YOU HAVE NO INTEGRITY
Wake up and see the left wing B.O. media is everywhere except fox news. When Palin come through this, the Dem. Party would have proved that Palin is a worthy VP.

Obama has so many lies and flip-flips he scared to make a comment or decision.

Please don''t peddle blatant falsehoods. Biden, along with 89 other Senators, voted for the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which repealed the Glass-Steagal Act.

Imagine if banks loaned money only to people who would likely be able to repay the loans. We wouldn''''t have this financial crisis but we would not be politically correct. Which is more important?

You smoking crack? those loans were made because whether they were qualified or not the seller of the loan got a percentage , they then passed it to the next on who got a % and then at some point they were divied up in weird little bond packages called SIV''s and sold to the lehman Bros. of the worlds bbecause htye had a hightr payout adding to their bonuses at the end of the year . investment vehicles and lines blurred twen them and the banks amde possible by the Gramm Leach Bliely bill of 1999 and provisions slipped into it at the last minute by Phiul Gramm ,MCcains economics adviser . It had nothing to do with political correctness , it had every thing to do with greed and that republican deregulation of safe guards on our economic system. Deregulation is now a dead horse and so is our financial system. By the way mccain voted for the bill and supported it , Biden did not.

Thankyou!! It would be nice if the children of America could actually get involved in the political process. I would NEVER let any child of mine read news stories on CBS because of all the *** that people post after the stories.

***************

It is my opinion that we should stop refering to each others'''' parties in demeaning terms.

We disagree. But we are Americans.

Let''''s call Democrats Democrats and Republicans Republicans or GOP.

After November 4, we still have to live in the same country together.

And it will still be a mess.

We won''''t fix it with hate speech.

Top McCain-Palin official Carly Fiorina is facing criticism from some within the campaign for a day of what they call "very Biden-like" comments, after the former Hewlett-Packard CEO told two separate interviewers that neither member of the Republican ticket would be capable of running a company.

Asked by a St. Louis radio station whether she thought Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin could run a company like Hewlett-Packard, Fiorina responded: "No, I don''t.

Asked about that remark on MSNBC, she made the same unprompted assessment of the GOP presidential nominee. "I don''t think John McCain could run a major corporation."

With the economy center stage in the campaign, Fiorina''s words gave Democrats easy fodder to attack the Republican ticket.

Has anyone else noticed that McCain/Palin are trying to appear to be Democrats?

They rant against "corruption" and the "failures" of REPUBLICAN leadership and I couldn''t believe an earlier speech where McCain actually mentioned Republicans as a cause of the problems we''re now facing.

They DON''T put their party on their signs and use "Democrat Blue" for their background on their signs.

I started to NOTICE this LACK of IDENTITY in a LOT of the Republicans running for office.

Sheesh you''d think they''re EMBARRASSED by THEIR OWN PARTY.

But the candidates for the HIGHEST OFFICE refusing to acknowledge on their signs they are REPUBLICANS and trying to HIDE that fact TOO???

Where are the BRIGHT RED backgrounds I USED TO SEE on their signs and the word REPUBLICAN PROUDLY DISPLAYED on those signs?

Where is the TRUTH as to WHAT PARTY they belong to?

I see a LOT of Democratic SIGNS PROUDLY DISPLAYING their PARTY affiliation.

GOP - the "STEALTH PARTY" HIDING their IDENTITY and acting like IDENTITY THIEVES stealing the OTHER Candidate''s PLATFORM, signs, ideas, etc in hope of MISLEADING voters??

How PATHETIC can Republicans get by trying to be Democrats? OWN UP and CHANGE PARTIES if you''re going to use the SAME platform and talking points!

That way maybe the Constitution Party or Libertarian Party might have a chance.

The KEATING 5 Financial Crisis was the DRESS REHEARSAL.

The developing NEO-DEPRESSION hitting NOW is OPENING NIGHT for their Financial "Harvest".

The best chance left now is International Outrage as the financial collapse of th US PULLS their nations down with it.

The problem IS NOT some "POOR GUYS BUYING WHAT THEY COULD NOT AFFORD".

Typical that the CONS that SET UP this CRISIS would "BLAME THE VICTIM".

At least with KEATING 5 and ENRON we STILL had the NERVE, OUTRAGE and ABILITY to INVESTIGATE,BRING CHARGES and PROSECUTE some of the TOP MANIPULATORS that destroyed so many ordinary citizen''s lives!

As it looks NOW the FAT CATS that used LOBBYISTS to push through SUCH DIRTY DEALINGS will "GET AWAY WITH IT" this time.

Guess "Financial Crisis Fatigue" has set in.

So many of the American people are acting like a BEATEN HOUSEWIFE who STAYS WITH the MONSTER that beats and abuses her!

It''s been a long and convoluted CON JOB based on SELFISHNESS and GREED by people who ALREADY had MORE THAN THEIR SHARE of the Nation''s WEALTH yet in their BOTTOMLESS PIT OF GREED - Wanted MORE!

They wanted it ALL AT ANY COST even up to and Including the DESTRUCTION of the American People and their way of life!

So, this TINY SLICE of people AT THE TOP a"worked" over decades to STEAL the ENTIRE WEALTH of our great Nation slowly inserting laws that FAVORED them, buying politicians, destroying leaders they could not buy and through careful media control and education "mismanagement" -DUMBING DOWN millions.

Of course I could just remind Publius77 of a comment I wrote a while back when the Bush/McCain NEO-CONS were busy trashing Ron Paul''s ECONOMIC WARNINGS in favor of FEAR and WAR MONGER manipulation:

It%u2019s so bad all I can do is LAUGH!!!

The ECONOMY is DROPPING faster than the Twin Towers that GEORGE IGNORED ALL WARNINGS about until it was TOO LATE. HE WAS PRESIDENT LONG before it happened and HE DID IGNORE the WARNINGS - irrefutably stated in SEVERAL DOCUMENTS.
ALL BUSH AND MCSAME seem to be doing is to "work Hard" to CARRY OUT OSAMA BIN LADEN''S STATED GOAL of DESTROYING THE US ECONOMY!!

Wonder what perverted logic George uses to JUSTIFY his TREASON and what Idiocy McSame uses to AGREE with such TREASON.

DIVERTING AWAY FROM OSAMA BIN LADEN (helloooo - he%u2019s in AFGHANISTAN) to ENRICH THE ARAB OIL COUNTRIES where OSAMA CAME FROM through ENDANGERING AND PROFITEERING ON OIL sure sounds like TREASON AGAINST the US to me!

McCain is just lining the American people up for the killing of our way of life through the FURTHER DEVASTATION of our ECONOMY also.
I call that either "brain-dead" or insidiously TREASONOUS.

The American Citizen will soon be the NEW Slave-labor PEASANT that%u2019s ALREADY fallen into being EXPLOITED an DUMBED DOWN.

As a previous campaign slogan once stated - "IT''S the ECONOMY"!

Andrew McCain was director of a bank acquired by Silver State Bank in early 2008 and served on the board of Silver State from February until July, when he resigned. Silver State is one of many failed banks (think IndyMac) and hardly the largest one brought on by the mortgage crisis. Other than name dropping, do you have some facts that indicate a scandal or is this another piece of rubbish tossed onto the board to see what sticks?

wonder if t here is any truth to the actual candidate that bumps off mutual opponent will win in November regardless of issues and polls?

provided there is an election considering how the economy may put a stop to it or another Bush/Cheney orchestrated war with Iran, Pakistan, Yemen, etc.

apparently the mutual opponent is wealthy, exposed corruption within both parties and is presently targeted.

wonder how would they bump off mutual opponent?

will Dems use an OJ Simpson-like black convict with jail time waiting? BTW, OJ is available as his trial is underway today.

will GOP use a Guiliani-like mob ties as used by his protege, ex-NYPD commissioner and was indicted for and may be doing up to 140 years of jail time? or use Gotti, Jr. who is also available as his trial is underway today too?

will both parties employ the popular law enforcement practice of ''sweetheart exchange deals'' where convicts commit crime/murders in exchange for less jail time, conveniently covered up and real culprits not suspected?

as this information is given, do we too have to worry about our personal safety? For example, should my diabetic husband worry about his health/life while doing his routine jog after work around 4-4:15pm in the Hackensack, Bogota and Teaneck, areas in NJ today? Do I have to worry about my own safety as I commute to the city via Port Authority bus this afternoon?
