Mars Recalls Some Dry Pet Foods

Potential Salmonella Contamination Affects Pedigree, Pet Pride, Other Brands

  •  (Mars Petcare)

(AP)  Mars Petcare US announced a voluntary recall Friday of all dry pet food products produced at its plant in Everson, Pa. between Feb. 18 and July 29, citing potential contamination with salmonella.

Mars, in a news release, did not say how much pet food is involved, but said the recall reaches 31 states and various brands and said the action was taken as a precaution.

"Even though no direct link between products produced at the Everson plant and human or pet illness has been made, we are taking this precautionary action to protect pets and their owners," the company statement said.

Mars said it stopped production at the plant July 29 when it was alerted of a possible link between dry pet food produced in Everson and two isolated cases of people infected with salmonella.

Mars said salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in humans also.

The company said consumers should look for "17" as the first two digits of the second line on the UPC for products affected. For Pedigree products, they should look for "PAE" on the bottom line.

They can also call (877) 568-4463 or consult www.petcare.mars.com.

The brand names include some items under the names Country Acres, Retriever, Doggy Bag, Members Mark, Natural, Ol' Roy, Special Kitty, Paws & Claws, Pedigree, Wegman's, Pet Pride, PMI Nutrition and Red Flannel.

Mars is lying. I reported their CANNED Pedigree as having made our dog very ill in August. When I called, Mars claimed then (& again today when I called) that the canned food not part of the Salmonella recall. I took 3 cases of canned Pedigree back to Walmart in Texas & reported the problem to the manager. I got on pet websites tonight & others share my story of their pets getting sick after eating Pedigree canned food. They are lying just like Menu Foods lied. I found on the CDC website Mars had a Salmonella outbreak a year or so ago involving the same plant in Pennsylvania. Investigative reporters, where are you????

This is why we should not do business
with the Martians.

They are not to be trusted.

Pleeze write and or call your congressperson
and all your respresentatives telling them
how you feel about this issue.

They have destroyed other planets.

Their plan is to first start with our pets
then . . .

Oh the madness! ! ! !

READ THE LABELS. Know that any pet food that says "by-products" contains nails, hooves, hair, eyeballs and even rendered euthanized dogs and cats. Aaaarrrggghhhh...sickening.

I have no experience with the other petfood manufacturers, but I have to say that my experience with Mars once upon a time leads me to believe that your allegation above - at least as far as Mars is concerned - is categorically untrue.

"Untrue", as in "false", "baloney", "hogwash", "bunk", "poppycock", "nonsense"...

So much so, in fact, that you might consider seeking employment with the McCain campaign team...working on the television ad side, I''d think.

Mars also distributes Whiskas Purfectly Fish and Purfectly Chicken (BOTH made in THAILAND) and the Purfectly Chicken I had big problems with. Not only was there nothing but water/broth or whatever in my packages, my cats puked the ones up that didn''t. When I contacted Mars online they sent me coupons for more of the same! I would NEVER again feed either of these and will no longer buy any of their products. Just a heads up...READ THE LABELS. Know that any pet food that says "by-products" contains nails, hooves, hair, eyeballs and even rendered euthanized dogs and cats. Aaaarrrggghhhh...sickening.
