iTunes 8 Causes Windows Vista Problems

Windows Users Seeing Blue Screen Of Death After Upgrading

  •  (AP / CBS)

(CNET)
Not everyone is rocking to the new iTunes 8 released Tuesday. An informal poll on ZDNet suggests that a problem with the latest edition of the Apple media player is affecting some, but not all, users of the software on Microsoft's Windows Vista.

Users on an Apple forum reported seeing the so-called blue screen of death (BSOD) on their desktops running Windows Vista with iTunes 8 installed. The BSOD problem occurs shortly after connecting their iPods and iPhones.

A second, more subtle effect is that their CD/DVD drives "disappear."

ZDNet's Ed Bott offers a look at the upgrades or changes in iTunes 8.

Removing other USB devices, such as Webcams and printers, appears to resolve the problem, for the moment. Users on the forum speculate that there is an incompatibility between Apple and USB products from LogicTech and HP, as well as disc-burning software from Roxio.

I think the problem is Itunes' compatibility with Vista and some Ipod models here because my Ipod video has no problem on both of my computers running Vista and XP but my 30 GB Classic Ipod causes Vista to crash and but runs without problem on XP.

You have to love the Microsoft haters. Apple releases a product that causes the BSOD and people are blaming Microsoft. Go figure.

VISTA is a Pig in lipstick.
I made the mistake of upgrading my users almost a year and a half ago. I been buying XP again.
Vista is bloated, buggy, but it''s pretty.

Microsoft could play dirty pool by causing app crashes.
MS Code is protected by copyright, so there is no way to prove the crash was intentional.

Nothing new here. I removed itoons along time ago due to interference with several programs, including abode video products. I will never put it back in my computer. Many better programs available to manage your ipod, so free and you can copy your song off the ipod to a computer. What a concept!!!

Qicktime player, or the last time I bothered with it, installed in such a way that if you try to uninstall it, it would prevent even Windows XP from being operational.

Apple likes to claim they''re better. Other companies make programs that don''t cripple Windows. Even Microsoft can! Why can''t Apple. Because they want people to go to their platform instead. The one they won''t let people clone and laughingly try to sue (think IBM vs Compaq in 1981; Apple hasn''t got a chance... or clue) but I digress.

So, fine. Let Apple make *** software. What happens if Microsoft makes Mac Office bad in a way that cripples it if you try to use (or remove) it?

Also, it looks like the fixes people have supplied so far all involve apple files from a previous release. Looks like itunes8 was rushed!

As it is directly in line with what I do at work... I wonder if Apple tested iTunes (practically a virus anyways) against various configurations of Windows machines. I never have issues with my Zune or the Zune client on my PC. In fact, I can purchase music DRM free from Zune OR get a subscription so that I can listen to whatever I want, as many times as I want without having to pay any more than my subscription fee.

More poor testing from Apple. Do not blame Vista for this, Apple decided to ship a crashy product in time for their "dangerous cult-of-personality" product unveilings in SF.

Been running Vista 64-bit and 32-bit on parallel systems for over a year now and other than an updating issue when it first came out, it has never crashed on me or caused me problems. The only real drawback to 32-bit is the RAM limitations and operating speed. The drawback to 64-bit is that the software industry hasn''t caught up to 64-bit technology yet.

Running Vista Ultimate 64 for a couple of months now. So far it''s been rock solid. I upgraded to iTunes 8 and haven''t been affected by the BSOD issue.

I rolled back to XP after a 9 month long disappointment with Vista. Vista was very good at first, until I started connecting a multitude of USB related devices, just as the article described. After deleting the partition and re-formatting, and installing XP, I found my PC booting up twice a fast and remaining stable. The biggest killer was reading SD memory sticks from my camera. Vista seemed to go into the "NOT RESPONDING" mode fairly predicably. XP seems to operate just fine. Flight Simulators seem to invite BSOD if other programs, like SKYPE were not ended and incoming calls occured, before launching the Flight Sim.

I come to accept that I expect too much from one PC, so I built three and segregated my programs so each does just one thing, Flight Sim, Photo Editing, and Internet-SKYPE-Emails. Only one is connected to the internet and seems to be stable.

The problem with all Microsoft products has always been that rather than basing their software on industry "standards", Microsoft always invents their own unique proprietary "solutions" that are intentionally designed to be incompatible with competitors products. That way they can "lock" their customers into using only Microsoft products.

Apple does exactly the same thing.

It''s a very deceptive and underhanded tactic, but it has served both companies very well financially, over the years, and they''re hardly about to change the practice any time soon, so just get used to it.

I much prefer the open-source Linux OS myself. A lot of my friends have switched to Ubuntu Linux this year, and say they''ll NEVER go back to MS Windows or Apple''s OSX again.

["Sorry, you have your facts wrong.

Is the Records Companies fear of Apple Power that has them holding back the DRM. Much of that is coming from NBC/Universal/GE (all same Company) in their effort to stay relevant in this new Digital Age. And they are afraid, very afraid, that Apple will byatch slap them all over the place as time goes by. But, if you caught the news this week, NBC has now come back on their knees crying to Apple to once again include NBC TV shows in iTunes, after NBC got all puffy and pulled them a while back."]

Hmmmm.....I was wondering why some of the shows I like could no longer be found on itunes

"Apple incompatible with..."

It''''s been the same story ever since Steve Jobs decided he could build a nice little religious cult by deliberately remaining incompatible with whatever MS puts out.
