7 Years Later, No Closer To Bin Laden

Al Qaeda Leader Proves Adept At Evading U.S. Tactics, Which Are Causing New Problems

  • Interactive Sept. 11 And Since

Reflecting on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, the day that changed America.

  • Special Report War On Terror

Complete coverage of the military's battle against terrorism.

(CBS)  Seven years after Sept. 11, 2001, in spite of President Bush's vows, the mastermind of the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil, Osama bin Laden, is still at large and leading a resurgent al Qaeda.

Since that day, al Qaeda has struck in Madrid, London, Bali, and Casablanca, reports CBS News correspondent Sheila MacVicar. The group has claimed more than a dozen terror attacks around the world and many hundreds more in Iraq and Afghanistan, leaving thousands of dead and wounded.

"These attacks are stark reminders that the threat of terrorism is real and still a danger to the entire world," said Maj. Gen. Robert Cone, the U.S. military commander in Afghanistan.

Thursday morning at Camp Eggers, near Kabul, Afghanistan, U.S. soldiers closest to the hunt for bin Laden remembered the people killed seven years ago in Washington and New York.

The last time the U.S. knew for certain bin Laden's whereabouts, he was leading the battle at Tora Bora. He slipped away, into the mountains along the border shared by Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The conventional wisdom is that that is where he remains - probably in Pakistan, but the trail is very cold.

"He's a good survivalist, a skilled survivalist," explains Kenneth Katzman of the Congressional Research Service. "He reads about what the U.S. methods are and he's obviously working very hard to defeat those methods. He's using personal messengers. He's not on a cell phone."

U.S. tactics have shifted, now the American military is using Predator drones to spy from the air, focusing on the tribal area in northwestern Pakistan.

Hellfire missile attacks, launched from Predators, have more than tripled against targets inside Pakistan - a renewed effort to break al Qaeda's central command and deny them shelter with their Taliban allies across the border in Afghanistan.

The New York times reports this morning that after months of internal debate, President Bush has secretly approved orders that for the first time, permit U.S. Special Forces to carry out ground assaults inside Pakistan without the prior approval of Pakistan's government.

A commando operation in Pakistan last week is reported to have involved more than two dozen Navy SEALs, who spent hours on the ground.

Pakistan's government says the raid resulted in many civilian deaths. What is for certain, the attack has angered a government that is sensitive about its sovereignty.

Our country was paralyzed on 911, this while Bush was reading My Pet Goat, Cheney was orchestrating a "mock" attack and Daddy Bush was in a meeting in NY with Bin Ladens brother.

Bush stood with the American people vowing to "get" Bin Laden.

Troops were sent to Afganistan--the place Bin Laden was believed to be. Then something strange happened, Bush twisted intelligence and manufactured a war in Iraq telling the American people and the world Saddam had something to do with 911.

It certainly was bad enough we lost nearly 3000 people in the WTC--but Bush added hundreds of thousands more deaths including over 4000 precious lives of our brave troops.
Iraq is in shambles, over 600,000 dead and 2 million displaced and Bush holds to the statement that the Iraqis are "better off"..

No one is better off Mr. Bush--our country is no safer than it was on 911---the Iraqis are no better off, the families and friends of the lives list on 911 have been slapped in the face by you, Americans and America has been humiliated by you sir and the world no longer trust the one great country they depended on.

You Mr. Bush are a not a leader and no better than the terrorists that attacked us on 911.

It is amazing how the neo-con spin machin is working.
Don`t they know that it was Bush/Cheney who helped a Saudi family to leave the USA on 9/11?
When the majority of the 9/11 suicides were know that they were saudi, did he tells the truth to the american people and the rest of the world ( surely that day the whold world was with our friends american people not Bush/Cheney) that he`s gona attack Saudi Arabia?
NO, instead, he tooks us into a country which has nothing to do with 9/11, distract the american armee to go after Bin laden in Afganistan , and where and what was he doing your Mcsame? Voting For Bush/Cheney policies who killed more than 4000 americans soldiers.
And now my friend, when other thinks are at stake, what they doing is divert our attention from Pallin (never in the history of the USA VP nominee has we seen not giving a press conference for so long )only the republican party can get away with that?
and when somebody else use the same "lipstick on a pigs" as Mcsame used before, it`s cry and outrage from the neo-con.

The next administration needs to get us out of Iraq and concentrate on Afghanistan. It needs to carry the fight to Bin Laden and put him out of commission in any possible way. The Bush administration squandered this chance and McCain wants to continue its poor record. Vote Obama. Put intelligence back into the White House.

Bin Laden funds terror activities all over the world. Al Qada deals street heroin for an extreme profit. The Coalition will never penetrate his underground sanctuary in Waziristan. The province is protected by Politicians in Islamabad who are paid by Al Qada. U.S. Special Forces Units sent into Waziristan are usually killed by Arab Mercenaries. George W. Bush will not attempt to capture an enemy who provides sufficient reason for the Saudis to raise the price for a barrel of oil.

Unfortunately, the bin Laden element has attacked other US interests in other countries. Given the massive tragedy of our 9/11 attacks, our economy continues to wax and wane. Bin Laden''s intent was also to ruin the US economically. Bin Laden will probably never be found, but his heinous acts continue globally, including those that indirectly impact the US.

Why would the neocons want to catch him? He helps instil the fear needed to control the US people. As a saudi, like almost all the hijackers, he may even be a US agent ... seems strange how Saudi Arabia has never even been criticised (let alone invaded) over 9-11, and yet the evidence of their involvement is overwhelming.

Bin Laden died or was killed by the CIA many years ago. Neo conservatives didn''t want to find him because they needed an excuse to raise the "terror alert" when they had a new piece of legislation to push through, like the Patriot Act II.

Plus the real 9/11 culprits are here in this country.
Why does our VP claim that 19 hijackers attacked us, when several of those hijackers were found ALIVE http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/1559151.stm.

Hopefully one day, someone will be bold enough to uncover what really happened, but if America ever found out there''d be hell to pay for Bush & Co, and a lot of other people that helped attack this country.

Giving Bush credit for not having more attacks after 9-11 is preposterous.

The Bush administration, out of pride and arrogance, refused to take any action whatsoever on the report that the Clinton administration provided them, entitled ''Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.'' (gee, could the title have been any clearer?)

So they fell down on the job, paving the way for the terrorists to have a field day. After 9-11, they finally got their act together and began to do what they SHOULD HAVE DONE to begin with.

The point is, if they hadn''t been too arrogant and proud and had done what they should have been doing all along to begin with, 9-11 would NEVER have happened. You guys want to give him some kind of prize for doing what he should have been doing all along, yet fail to recognize that it happened on Bush''s watch, AFTER he had been warned! Pathetic!

If a business executive loses a number of major clients due to irresponsibility and negligence, you don''t give him an Employee of the Year award just because he fails to lose more. Get it?

And you thought he''d be caught by now where when your president goes on FNC and says this here''s text of a converstion Fred Barnes a rightwing pundit speaking about hm talking to BUSH about Bin Laden HOST: Alright Fred, you and a few other journalists were in the Oval Office with the President, right? And he says catching Osama bin Laden is not job number one?

BARNES: Well, he said, look, you can send 100,000 special forces, that%u2019s the figure he used, to the mountains of Pakistan and Afghanistan and hunt him down, but he just said that%u2019s not a top priority use of American resources. His vision of a war on terror is one that involves intelligence to find out from people, to get tips, to follow them up and break up plots to kill Americans before they occur. That%u2019s what happened recently in that case of the planes that were to be blown up by terrorists, we think coming from England, and that%u2019s the top priority. He says, you know, getting Osama bin Laden is a low priority compared to that.

Or the President wouldn''t have said this at a Whitehouse press conf. on March 13th 2002 that''s right one yr after the we''ll get ''em dead or alive statement The President the great George W Bush said this Q Mr. President, in your speeches now you rarely talk or mention Osama bin Laden. Why is that? Also, can you tell the American people if you have any more information, if you know if he is dead or alive? Final part -- deep in your heart, don''t you truly believe that until you find out if he is dead or alive, you won''t really eliminate the threat of --

THE PRESIDENT: Deep in my heart I know the man is on the run, if he''s alive at all. Who knows if he''s hiding in some cave or not; we haven''t heard from him in a long time. And the idea of focusing on one person is -- really indicates to me people don''t understand the scope of the mission.

Terror is bigger than one person. And he''s just -- he''s a person who''s now been marginalized. His network, his host government has been destroyed. He''s the ultimate parasite who found weakness, exploited it, and met his match. He is -- as I mentioned in my speech, I do mention the fact that this is a fellow who is willing to commit youngsters to their death and he, himself, tries to hide -- if, in fact, he''s hiding at all.

he had hepatitus c,required kidney dialysis, couldn''t even walk without a cane, diabetes, received insulin shots, missing two toes from a war wound, secondary osteoporosis, and reports of possible liver problems.

and he cont. with that ? So I don''t know where he is. You know, I just don''t spend that much time on him, Kelly, to be honest with you. I''m more worried about making sure that our soldiers are well-supplied; that the strategy is clear; that the coalition is strong; that when we find enemy bunched up like we did in Shahikot Mountains, that the military has all the support it needs to go in and do the job, which they did.

And there will be other battles in Afghanistan. There''s going to be other struggles like Shahikot, and I''m just as confident about the outcome of those future battles as I was about Shahikot, where our soldiers are performing brilliantly. We''re tough, we''re strong, they''re well-equipped. We have a good strategy. We are showing the world we know how to fight a guerrilla war with conventional means.

Clinton ordered missile strikes on Bin Laden which were carried out in August 1998. Unfortunately, they missed him by a few hours. People like Arlen Specter were critical of Clinton at the time, accusing him of trying to ''wag the dog''.

At least Clinton made an attempt. Bush ignored the report on Bin Laden that the Clinton administration left him.

Q But don''t you believe that the threat that bin Laden posed won''t truly be eliminated until he is found either dead or alive?
THE PRESIDENT: Well, as I say, we haven''t heard much from him. And I wouldn''t necessarily say he''s at the center of any command structure. And, again, I don''t know where he is. I I''ll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him. I know he is on the run. I was concerned about him, when he had taken over a country. I was concerned about the fact that he was basically running Afghanistan and calling the shots for the Taliban. But once we set out the policy and started executing the plan, he became -- we shoved him out more and more on the margins. He has no place to train his al Qaeda killers anymore. And if we excuse me for a minute and if we find a training camp, we''ll take care of it. Either we will or our friends will. That''s one of the things part of the new phase that''s becoming apparent to the american people is that we''re working closely with other governments to deny sanctuary, or training, or a place to hide, or a place to raise money.
See that''s the thing the American people have got to understand, thatwe''ve only been at this six months. This is going to be a long struggle.I don''t know whether you all believe me or not.But time will show you that it''s going to take a long time to achieve this objective. And I can assure you, I am not going to blink. And I''m not going to get tired.Because I know what is at stake.

Of course we''re no closer to bin Laden. In stead of going into Afghanistan to capture bin Laden, our fabulous commander in chief decided to invade Iraq to show our resolve, albeit he had been looking for an excuse to invade Iraq long before 9/11 - Check out all the pre-9/11 chatter on various right wing web sites.
John McCain stopped short of selling tickets for the war, partially because Charlie Black, McCain''s chief campaign manager, was a lobbyist for Ahmed Chalabi, a former bank embezzler who turned out to be an agent for Iran. McCain helped promote the lies that got us into the war.
Invading Iraq after 9/11 made as much sense as invading Brazil after Pearl Harbor. Yet McCain wants us to believe that he''s a competent commander-in-chief. In a real world military, an officer with McCain''s competence would face court martial. But we want to elect him to the White House

McCain%u2019s Secret Plan to Capture Bin Laden

Alex Frangos reports from Florida on the presidential race.

John McCain says in almost every stump speech that he knows how to capture Osama bin Laden and that he%u2019d follow the al Qaeda leader to the %u201CGates of Hell.%u201D
So Washington Wire was wondering, what does McCain know that President Bush and the Pentagon don%u2019t about how to sweep up America%u2019s most elusive enemy.

%u201COne thing I will not do is telegraph my punches. Osama bin Laden will be the last to know,%u201D he said today while riding on the back of his bus between Florida events. In other words: he%u2019s not telling. Why not share his strategy with the current occupant of the White House? %u201CBecause I have my own ideas and it would require implementation of certain policies and procedures that only as the president of the United States can be taken.%u201D

Yes I know exactly why they hate us... because of our support of Israel. Mostly though Bin Laden has been wanting revenge since he offered the services of his mujahedeen to King Fahd to protect Saudi Arabia from the Iraqi army and was turned down. The Saudi monarch refused bin Laden''s offer and instead allowed U.S. and allied forces to deploy on Saudi territory. The deployment angered Bin Laden, he believed the presence of foreign troops in the "land of the two mosques" (Mecca and Medina) profaned sacred soil. After speaking publicly against the Saudi government for harboring American troops, he was quickly forced into exile to Sudan and his Saudi citizenship was revoked. He been one mad S.O.B. since then and is hell bent on wreaking havoc on not just the U.S. but all around the world to salve his ego. His isn''t a holy war...it''s a war of revenge.

Who care about Obama bin Ladin. Its Muslim Extremist that has to be defeated. It will take tens of years to defeat this evil. Muslims have been doing this for thousands of years. Now that Nukes have entered the picture, they now have a new device to continue there destruction of anything non-muslim. BAN MUSLIM IMMIGRATION NOW!!!

Ummmm like, their already here? Didn''t we bring in a few thousand that had been displaced in Iraq?

These people didn''t ask the US to "liberate" them!

They are worse off under the Bush regime than they were under Saddam.

Suicide bomber(s) belonging to al-Qaida''s Martyrdom Battalion could crash-land an aircraft packed with high explosives (C-4 and semtex) into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), or the White House.

McCain concerned with our safety? Yeah, right! He knows how to capture Bin Laden, but won''t tell anyone because he prefers to hold American hostage in an attempt to win the election.

I''m sure you Republicans applaud his patriotism. Hell, you guys are giving him a standing ovation!
