Some call him a hero, some a maverick. Will Americans call him Mr. President?

  • 60 Minutes The New Team

Barack Obama and Joe Biden give their first joint interview to CBS' Steve Kroft.

(CBS)  About a third of the voters who were uncommitted to either Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama or Republican rival Sen. John McCain one month ago have now made up their minds, and more have settled on the Republican ticket than the Democratic one, a new CBS News poll finds.

For the new poll, CBS News re-interviewed voters who said they were uncommitted in a CBS News/New York Times poll conducted in mid-August. While nearly two in three still have not settled on a candidate, 20 percent of these previously uncommitted voters have now decided to back McCain, while 14 percent have settled on Obama.

In the August poll, uncommitted voters made up 34 percent of all registered voters. Voters were considered uncommitted if they indicated they preferred a candidate but had not settled with certainty on that candidate, or if they were completely undecided.

Read The Complete Poll

Among previously uncommitted voters who have decided to back a candidate, Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin has been well received: 52 percent have a favorable feeling towards her, while just 18 percent view her unfavorably. Obama running mate Sen. Joe Biden is less well known: 54 percent say they don't know enough about him to have an opinion.

When asked directly what helped them to choose a candidate, 28 percent of these previously uncommitted voters volunteered Sarah Palin, making her the top reason. Sixteen percent volunteered the speeches at the conventions.

Previously uncommitted voters have been paying more attention to the campaign. Thirty-nine percent of all previously uncommitted voters say they have paid a lot of attention in the last few weeks, and 46 percent have paid at least some attention. When they were originally interviewed in August, just 21 percent of these same voters said they had been paying a lot of attention to the campaign in recent weeks.

Despite McCain's lead among previously uncommitted voters who have made up their mind, McCain and Obama are running about even when voters who are not yet certain are included. Forty percent of previously uncommitted voters say they support Obama, though more than half have not made a firm commitment to the Democratic nominee; 39 percent say they support McCain.

Among voters who were completely undecided in August there has been more movement towards McCain than Obama. Thirty-one percent of formerly undecided voters have moved towards the Arizona senator, while 23 percent have moved towards his Democratic rival. Forty-five percent remain completely undecided.

At least some of McCain's newfound support appears to be coming from the Republican base. Though McCain has traditionally struggled to win over the group, his selection of Palin has energized socially conservative voters. Eighty-one percent of voters who have moved towards McCain say vice presidential choices will be influential in their vote. And half of the voters who have moved towards McCain expect him to adopt more conservative policies than President George W. Bush.

Previously uncommitted voters who have made up their minds are far more likely to say Biden is prepared to be vice president (71 percent say that he is) than to say the same of Palin (just 47 percent say yes.) But Palin is far more relatable to these voters, with 71 percent saying they can relate to the Alaska governor compared to 36 percent for Biden.

Voters who remain uncommitted to either candidate are slightly more likely to be female than male. Forty-six percent describe themselves as independents, and 48 percent say they are moderates. More than half are 45 years old or older.

The perception of the candidates amongst these voters mirrors perceptions amongst the greater electorate. Obama is seen as more relatable than McCain: 72 percent of still-uncommitted voters relate to the Democratic nominee, while just 38 percent relate to his rival. But McCain is more widely seen as prepared for the presidency, with 82 percent saying the Arizona senator is ready for the job. (Just 31 percent say the same of Obama.) McCain is also more widely seen as likely to be an effective commander in chief.

This poll was conducted by telephone September 5-7, 2008 among 738 respondents first interviewed by CBS News and the New York Times August 15-19, 2008. CBS News re-interviewed 655 registered voters for this poll, including 208 uncommitted voters. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample and registered voters could be plus or minus four percentage points. The error on measures of individual change is much smaller.

hahahahhHAhHHahah this story is hilarious!! So, 2 out of 3 uncommitted voters are still uncommitted, but out of that group of uncommitted voters, 20% are on McCain and 14% are on Obama...

let''s see with REAL NUMBERS shall we?

According to Real Clear Politics, the CBS poll is for a TOTAL of 677 respondants. 46% are for McCain, 44% are for Obama. That equals 90%. So, 10% are uncommitted. So, out of 677 total people, 68 (rounding up) are uncommitted. Out of that, 20% (13 people.. rounding up) are for McCain and 8 are for Obama. So, this story is all about *FIVE PEOPLE*

FIVE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!! HELLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... WHY IS THIS A STORY!?!??!?!

They''re talking about FIVE PEOPLE!!!

Neither Dems or Repubs "party members" will decide the next election. It will be us Independents!! Since the conventions, all you hear is how bad the other side is, not what good we will bring. The more negative the message, the further away I go from that party''s candidate. So far the left has been far more negative than the right. If that changes I might again start to lean more towards Obama, but not until then.

How Palin can be well received is puzzling. Apparently, Palin is a religious nut job whose current church believes a homosexual can be turned into a heterosexual by prayer. At her former church, maybe Palin too, the congregation apparently spoke in tongues. If Palin isn''t a religious nut job, then have no idea what more characteristics are necessary. McCain is an old man at 72 and not in the best of health. Should McCain die in office, the religious nut job becomes President. If McCain was late 40s, or under 65, and in the best of health, Palin would not be too great of a concern. But, the nation will get the Presidential team it deserves just like the last 8 years.

In a year when the democrats "can''t lose," the best they could do was offer us either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

In an average election year, neither one would have a snowball''s chance in hell of winning the presidency. This year I really thought they couldn''t lose.

Leave it to the democratic party to screw up such an opportunity.

Don''t be surprised if the democrats manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory......so disappointing.

Juan Amnesty Mccain co-sponsored a bill that would have given amnesty/citizenship to over 20 million illegal latinos, so we know where amensty mccain stands on that issue, what does Sarah Palin feel about amnesty for illegal latinos? I want to know.. don''t just say she is against it, prove it, provide a link where she says in a article NO AMNESTY/Citizenship for illegal immigrants... that is the one issue I want to know how she feels about. Amnesty Mccain would have to pass a staunch anti-amnesty bill through the senate to get me to even consider voting for him, and promise no more tax cuts to the wealthy!

If McCain and Palin are elected get ready to address them as King and Queen. Like days of old, if you complained about the monarchy, your lands were taken and off with your head...This is how America was born, many of our ancestors where chased off their lands and had to leave because the King and Queen wanted it all...we had the poor and the rich, just like we have now. How many castles does McCain have?? he doesn''t even know. Just like former New York Mayor Koch said today," Palin scares the hell out of me". Both McCain and Palin should scare the heck out of you too.

Take a real look at Sarah Palin. Surely you can''t like this woman who is heavy handed, a liar and backwards. She was all for that bridge and hired lobbyists to get her small town more federal money - $27,000,000. She is against science and advancements. Surely people will pay enough attention to realize that this woman is not who she would like them to believe she is. She scares the hell out of me. All Christians are not the same - her views are a long way from main line Christian views. Christians can be extremist and just plain wrong and she is one of those.

*** I agree! I am not voting for Barak Obama because I like him... I''m voting for Obama because.. I HATE AMNESTY MCCAIN! And I want another direction other than the past 8 years. I voted Edwards in the SC primary, he would have been the best chance at winning.. Had he won the nomination, they could have paid off his mistress and news agencies to fully cover that all up. Edwards was shown in poll after poll to defeat any of the republican candidates BY DOUBLE DIGITS in any likely voting senario! This Election should have been Edwards against Romney or Huckabee. How anyone wants even amnesty Mccain over Romney or Huckabee makes me question how intelligent people are these days! Atleast Romney and Huckabee were Govenors and didn''t side with George bush 95 precent of the time like Amnesty Mccain! So even the republicans should have gone in a different direction than Amnesty Mccain! Edwards would have won in a landslide!

I have to agree, the McCain policy is to negate whatever topic Obama talks about, but they don''t come back with a solution of their own.

All I hear on the McCain campaign is

McCain--POW
MCCain--she sold a jet on ebay at a profit
Palin--the bridge to nowhere--thanks but no thanks

Today Obama stated the CEO''s at fannie mac should not be getting the huge bonuses they continue to get now that the government has taken that over.

Personally, when I listen to a politician--I want to hear "substance" not misinformation and sarcasm.

Typical response from a "Party Guy"
Do you know the definition of the word "since" as in since the convention. At least try an attempt at comprehension.
You can''t tell me that both sides didn''t do equal bashing of the other side.
The point I was making was that the left & it''s party members (such as yourself) goes on full attack on people that are not in thier clan. Your response is a great example of that. If Obama loses this election it will be because of people like you! If he does lose, give yourself a nice pat on the back.

*** You make some very good points! How people would want 4 more years of Bush(amnesty Mccain) is beyond me! with bushs approval rating at only 28 percent, how is amnesty mccain getting even 40 percent of likely voters. Are voters really that stupid... umm I think bush did a horrible job, but i''ll vote for the guy that votes with him 90 to 95 percent of the time.. how stupid! Wake up people and demand change! Amnesty Mccain is no change! AMnesty Mccain is more of Bush, any yet he couldn''t even beat out bush for the republican nomination in 2000, so the repubs are going backwards, instead of forwards!

"Senior foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann [to John McCain] recently faced scrutiny over his foreign lobbying on behalf of the Republic of Georgia, which has been embroiled in a military conflict with Russia."

This helps explain how John McCain has been feeding the dogs of war in the Caucasus region to stoke his own presidential chances.

General Election: McCain vs. Obama

RCP Average

McCain 48.0

Obama 45.6

McCain +2.4 and going DOOOOoooooowwwnnnn..

The GOP convention bounce is deflating a little more each day.

No wonder the Obama camp isn''t getting distracted and is putting its message of truth and hope out there in a consistent and disciplined way.

Least you all forget, Barrack Obama was the co-author of the Comprenhensive Immigration bill. Chicago is an amnesty city. Obama would like and has written and spoke many times about giving the illegals amnesty. He and others want them to Pay To Stay.....many of the illegals have plenty of money and the amount that Obama and others want them to pay is "walking around money to them". John McCain is also for amnesty. I don''t care who Palin is for, she is for herself first of all. Our country is in deep trouble know matter who of these people are elected. All of them have skeltons in their closets. We need a honest group to run our country....have we ever, since 1776 had a honest group of politicans running our country?? Bush and Cheney have made the U.S.one of the worst run countries in the world. We need an Independent group to re-start the road to success...One of the people running are worthy of being elected to anything, including dog catcher.

But Obama, more than any candidate I can remember, has avoided the GOP-type tactics of personal destruction.

McCain needs to do this, too.

Questions of McCain''s and Palin''s associations have not been answered -- except to confirm that McCain has actively courted the vote of religious bigots, frauds and convicted swindlers.

Of course, the elephant in the room is McCain''s slavish devotion to the Bush/GOP agenda. Every item. Every tax loophole. Every failed economic policy. Every war death. Every oil and war lobbyist. Every one.

Beyond that, Sarah Palin''s pastor and her babbling, anti-semitic, downright peculiar pentocostal church ought to make any thinking person run as far from putting her next to a red button as possible.

The only question is...when will people start thinking?

So, 2 out of 3 uncommitted voters are still uncommitted, but out of that group of uncommitted voters, 20% are on McCain and 14% are on Obama...

let''''s see with REAL NUMBERS shall we?

They''''re talking about FIVE PEOPLE!!!

SOMEONE REFUTE THAT PLEASE

I''ll refute my own post.. but just a little... i said 677 respondants.. i was wrong.. it was 700 respondants of which 655 were registered voters.. so we''re talking about 655 people, not 677 as stated above.

We''re STILL TALKING ABOUT FIVE PEOPLE!!!! WHY IS THIS A TOP STORY??? I can go talk to my neighbors and in one house there''s a family of 6. All are for Obama... that should make FRONT PAGE NEWS

In the end, it the votes that matter, not experience. Politics is a game. So, maybe Obama should of thought about votes verses experience. Wow, that was deep.

Sorry Mr. Lewis, but Americans already got a look at real fascism on our shores just this year as we watched the "White Massars" who actually run the DNC use their power to disenfranchise sufficient numbers of votes to allow them to use their, "Super Delegates" to install this 50%-Amerifrican puppet.

The DOW is down 288 points just today; the national debt is growing by leaps and bounds; unemployment is at record levels; the war in Iraq continues costing us over 10 billion dollars a month, all the while, Iraq has a 79 billion dollar surplus; Social Security is a mess; the health care program is a mess, and what do the Republicans do? What about the problems in education, infrastructure. They make personal attacks? Where are the solutions they think are required? What part of the Bush/McCain policy would they like to retain - if any.

According to the press, white women are flocking to Palin--no, wait! It''s white men, not white women!

These morons don''t know which end is up.

But it sure is clear how the right wing press is pushing their own financial interests, and their pet neocon, John McClone. Maybe McClone can help them sell advertising space when he starts WW3.

Least you all forget, Barrack Obama was the co-author of the Comprenhensive Immigration bill.

*** NO HE DID NOT! It was the Kennedy-Mccain Amnesty Bill, not Obama! Obama tried attaching adendums so that the bill wouldn''t have come to a vote. The labor unions are Obamas biggest supporters! Do you really think Obama would grand amnesty to take over union american jobs with union heads breathing down his neck...NO! Obama wants the hispanic votes, that is why he is talking about allowing "SOME" amnesty for some, but not amnesty for over 20 million illegals like Amnesty Mccain wants!

"Independents" my a$$.

If they were anything but Repug shills, they''d know that McClone is just 4 more years of Bushit.

Most of them on this thread pretend to be outraged Hillary supporters! Amusing.

Every one.

Beyond that, Sarah Palin''s pastor and her babbling, anti-Semitic, downright peculiar Pentecostal church ought to make any thinking person run as far from putting her next to a red button as possible.

The only question is...when will people start thinking?

Speaking of hands, why don''''t you take your equipment in hand and do to yourself what we can all be confident no woman is willing to do, unless you pay her.

Your Demotard suckbuddies pay just as well for the cussing to be conducted in English.

McCain campaign:

"This contest is not about issues."

It''s not? What''s it about? Lipstick on a dog?

Because I thought it was about Jobs, the economy, Iraq, health care, education, safe neighborhoods...

I guess not.

I guess the GOP doesn''t want us thinking about that. Understandable.

I guess it''s about dogs in lipstick.

Hmmmm.
