A look at Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's life and career

(AP)  Gov. Sarah Palin's church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer.

"You'll be encouraged by the power of God's love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality," according to the insert in the bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church, where Palin has prayed for about six years.

Palin's conservative Christian views have energized that part of the GOP electorate, which was lukewarm to John McCain's candidacy before he named her as his vice presidential choice.

She is staunchly anti-abortion (opposing exceptions for rape and incest), and opposes gay marriage and spousal rights for gay couples.

Focus on the Family, a national Christian fundamentalist organization, is conducting the Love Won Out Conference in Anchorage, about 30 miles from Wasilla.

Palin, campaigning with McCain in the Midwest on Friday, has not publicly expressed a view on the so-called "pray away the gay" movement. Larry Kroon, senior pastor at Palin's church, was not available to discuss the matter Friday, said a church worker who declined to give her name.

Gay activists in Alaska said Palin has not worked actively against their interests, but early in her administration she supported a bill to overrule a court decision to block state benefits for gay partners of public employees.

At the time, less than one-half of 1 percent of state employees had applied for the benefits, which were ordered by a 2005 ruling by the Alaska Supreme Court.

Palin reversed her position and vetoed the bill after the state attorney general said it was unconstitutional.

But her reluctant support didn't win fans among Alaska's gay population, said Scott Turner, a gay activist in Anchorage.

"Less than 1 percent of state employees would even apply for benefits, so why make a big deal out of such a small number?" he said.

"I think gay Republicans are going to run away" if Palin supports efforts like the prayers to convert gays, said Wayne Besen, founder of the New York-based Truth Wins Out, a gay rights advocacy group. Besen called on Palin to publicly express her views now that she's a vice presidential nominee.

"People are looking at Sarah Palin as someone who might feasibly be in the White House," he said.

I''m sorry kids Palin is a Bible Church fanatic. In my town there are a few Bible Churches. All have been started by individuals who are after money and control. None have formal religous education and formation of any kind. They teach a religion of intolerance and use the bible passages as they see fit weather there is any remote justification. They tend to preach their version of the scriptures in accord with their own agendas. Palin and McCain are not what the country needs.

From the story on her state-paid trip to religious school, she said: "What I need to do is strike a deal with you guys as you go out throughout Alaska -- I can do my part in doing things like working really, really hard to get a natural gas pipeline. Pray about that also. I think God''s will has to be done, in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that."

And the Conservatives think Obama makes subtle, subtle inferences he''s the Second Coming. Palin practically states she is aloud. This woman is scaring me.

Sarah Palin is a da-mned liar! She stated more than once since being selected by McCain that she said "Thanks but no thanks to that Bridge to Nowhere". BULL! She was for that bridge when she ran for governor, and she didn''t kill it, congress did when it became too controversial. (remember is was a member of her own party who proposed it.. yet she makes it sound like a Democratic idea!) She did keep the initial payment for the bridge however!!

She also said she is against earmarks! More BULL, as mayor of her town of around 6000 people , she hired a Washington lobbyist, and got over 26 million dollars in earmarks!

Sarah Palin is a hypocrite and a phony, not to mention a right wing nut case!

Sarah Palin is a celebrity like like of the beauty queen circuit does this disqualify her or does her four year undergraduate degree in journalism that took six years for her to like get.

Obama is a professor of constitutional law who graduated at the top of his class from Harvard . He has been a state senator for seven years and a U.S. Senator for 3 1/2 years. 200,000 people saw his speech in Berlin. Berlin is in Germany, an allied country. Isn''''''''t this a good thing ?

why is homosexuality such a huge issue in these elections?? like how many *** and lesbians are there in this country that a large chunk of the deciding topics is focused on a tiny group of people. there has got to be tons of money from the gay male (def. not female!)community paying for some part of these policy changes. like hiring lawers and policy makers to enforce only their rights, regardless of how it affects the majority of the country. maybe they want to turn San Francisco into their own country soon as well -- at the next election.

There are a lot of people whose ideas I disagree with!
And there are a lot of lifestyles people live that I disagree with!

But, I''ve never actively attempted to force them to change by publically pressuring them, intinidating them, belittling them, or labeling them in order to ostracize them from society!

Because, under this form of government, they have the right to choose how they want to live THEIR lives! We all should have that consideration.

That Sarah Palin acts in defiance to the rule of law and would attempt to attack and bully others is frightening to say the least! That she doesn''t understand or except the precepts of the government which she supposedly serves, is outrageous!

How can we possibly trust her to faithfully carry out her duties?! WE CANNOT! How can we trust her to faithfully respect and OBEY the rule of law?! WE CANNOT! And, finally how can we expect her to faithfully carry out the duties of vice-president or president, if required?! WE CANNOT!

Vote with your mind (reasoned judgment) and not blindly with your heart (emotions), lest you be
deceived!

I seriously doubt you are Republican, if you are, perhaps it is time to change your affiliation to independent. You got your tax break thanks to President Bush, don''t be fooled by Obama and his rhetoric, taxes going up are taxes going up and if you increase them on the rich, we are all going to feel it.

As for this story on Sarah Palin, she is a conservative republican, I hardly find this surprising. Do I like it, now, however, if we can''t criticize Senator Obama for attending a church that preaches a form of race bating than I guess we can''t condemn her for attending this churuch, woops. oh wait, yes the church she attended up until SIX YEARS AGO and does not attend now. Hmm, maybe she had a change of heart or reevaluated her religious convictions, not that anyone will care to ask of course

Palin and her beliefs frighten me. If Christianity has a Taliban/lunatic fringe, it appears her beliefs and church would meet that test. These beliefs are far from that of our mainline Christian churches. I hope people will think and pray about this.

When are people going to realize that you can''t legislate good behavior. I also hope there are enough good Christians who feel it is their duty to take care of the earth that they won''t vote for Sarah Palin who just doesn''t get that issue at all.

I agree. I don''t think that the gay community will ever overthrow our Government. And I don''t believe that a woman who has an abortion will change most of our lives in any way. So why do these issues always seem to get more attention than the important issues that really do affect everyone like the economy, the nations security, and the price of gasoline and heating oil? And how about retirement and Social Security? I think we should put our priorities in order.

If the Jeremiah Wright link was enough to grill Obama about for weeks, then I hope Palin will face similar media scrutiny for this and many other controversial things this church stands for.

But I doubt Charlie Gibson on ABC will ask any real hardball questions when she meets him next week. Just easy, slow pitch softballs, per his and ABC''s reputation.

"Pray Away The Gay" huh? Well if they truly believe this works - then why not the reverse? Perhaps a somewhat more progressive and tolerant church could organize a prayer-festival to pray that all the heterosexuals be converted to homosexuality. I can hear the gnashing of teeth now.

The studies that say that being Gay is being born that way. Every one that I have read was done by a Doctor or Doctors that were Gay themselves. That should tell you something about what is going on. I would bet my life that some of the Gay people are born that way, but some are that way because of a COP-OUT life. Not wanting to take Responsibility for their actions.

The truth hurts.........

I knew a fellow who became paralyzed because of an accident. He was distraught, but assured everyone he would be healed. He went from one faith healing pentecostal church to the other looking for a healing. He threw money anywhere they told him to. And over and over again, he would say he is going to be healed. Reasonable people tried to get him to develop a more positive attitude and accept his situation so that he could begin to progress, but no, the faith healers kept up his false hopes. He died, still paralyzed and with a lot less money in the end. These are what these fundy pentecostals leaders do to the poor, the weak, the sick and the old.

That isn''t true, but your cult led mentality won''t let you think anything else. There are some excellent studies that are now showing that stress that mother''s have can affect the womb and affect the fetus with hormones that evidence shows leading to their orientation. Check it out, and it isn''t conducted by homosexuals. Break free of that cult led mentality.

Most of the pentecostal evangelicals do impose their beliefs on others. They find a way to make sure that if you are in public you have to put up with their preaching at you either through music or otherwise. I have gone to fairs only to be bombarded with Christian rock upon entering. They will insist that everyone has to put up with their stuff. Most reasonable people know to walk away, but then there are the poor, the weak, the sick and the old...and they get those guys everytime.

And notice the brainwashing in Palin''s particular church where her pastor tells people they have to vote for a certain man or may be doomed to hell:

I''m not going tell you who to vote for, but if you vote for this particular person, I question your salvation. I''m sorry.

Kalnins added: If every Christian will vote righteously, it would be a landslide every time.

Brainwashing 101 at your local Assembly of the GODS Church.

Obama also aligned himself with the gay conversion movement when he had Donnie McClurkin, a "converted" minister, headline his campaign''s gospel tour during the S.C. primaries. McClurkin espouses ridding society of the "homosexual curse." When gay advocates objected, he ignored them. Hillary was the candidate who was a true friend of the gay and lesbian community. Obama, McCain, Palin...no big dofference.

*********

So, did you choose to be a heterosexual? Did you one day at 12 or 13 say, "hmm, I can be hetero or ****? Choices, choices!"

And then said, "Well, the Bible says I should chose to be hetero, so that''s what I''ll choose."

Or did your desires naturally kick in and you started lusting after the babes in school?
