Some call him a hero, some a maverick. Will Americans call him Mr. President?

(AP)  Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama said Saturday they will put aside partisan politics for a joint appearance at Ground Zero to mark the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Democratic and Republican presidential nominees, in a statement, said they will appear together at the World Trade Center site on Thursday "to honor the memory of each and every American who died" in the 2001 attacks.

The campaigns already had agreed to suspend television advertising critical of each other on Sept. 11. The McCain campaign has said it will air no ads that day.

Both campaigns have been running negative television ads and, at the just-concluded political conventions, pulled no punches in exploiting partisan differences.

Obama and McCain said Thursday will be different.

"All of us came together on 9/11 - not as Democrats or Republicans - but as Americans," they said. "We were united as one American family. On Thursday, we will put aside politics and come together to renew that unity."

A group backing community service, MyGoodDeed.org, wants Sept. 11 to become a national day of voluntary service and had asked that Obama and McCain perform acts of community service instead of campaigning.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed after hijackers rammed passenger airplanes into the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon. The death total includes 40 passengers and crew members aboard the fourth hijacked plane, United 93. It crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pa., as passengers rushed the cockpit, investigators believe.

Clever piece of manipulation by US political journalism; tries to make it factual that the ''surge'' worked. The violence was actually reduced mostly due to Sunni ''awakening'' tribes on one hand, and Iran reigning in Al Sadr on the other. No wonder americans are easily led emotional wrecks - you believe all the rubbish you are fed.

"All of us came together on 9/11 - not as Democrats or Republicans - but as Americans," they said. "We were united as one American family. On Thursday, we will put aside politics and come together to renew that unity."

I remember all the cars and trucks driving around with stickers that said "United We Stand."

The problem was, we never had a meeting to agree on WHAT WE WERE UNITED ABOUT.

Within six months, we were hearing "Bush is to blame" and "Bush is Hitler." Instead of uniting us, the shameful ones (we ALL know who they are) used 9/11 to divide us.

Those divisions still run deep today. It''s ironic, the more recent crises related to energy and the financial world seem to have done more to unify public opinion.

They have unified us in the agreement that the Republicans have failed us. The Democrats failed us long ago, and after two years without the excuse of a Republican majority in Congress, the Democrats are failing us yet again. Congress has an even lower approval rating than the President.

We need a change. I hope it will be Obama. We have no choice.

Have you been safe the last 8 years? Have the terrorists attacked us again?

Terrorists have not attacked the United States since September 11th, 2001 - about 8 months after President Bush took office. Seven years after the mass murders that were committed on 9/11, Osama Bin Laden, accused of plotting and implementing the attack, has not been captured.

Actually, the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act was passed by the REPUBLICAN controlled House and the REPUBLICAN controlled Senate and the REPUBLICAN President to eliminate all third trimester abortions. It''''s constitutionality was upheld in 2007 by the Supreme Court.

So yes, the Republicans DID do something about abortion. Stop your spreading your factless agenda and get actually do some research before you open you a comment.

And, apparently McCain will be there to honor the ''Pearl Harbor'' event that allowed Bush to rush forward with the Iraq war!

Is THAT acceptable CBS, without informing the public?
I''m trying to work with you, here!

If terrorists and illegal immigrants can participate in this historic election, Obama might get their extra votes to break the tie. Go McCain & Palin go; you will lead the world in fighting corruptions and government reforms and preserving freedom and democracy. Break the glass ceiling Palin!

This isn''t an election.!!

It''s the repubs version of the Olympics.!!

If you blow the gold you run over to

the judge and promise him that you''ll

show him "change" in your next attempt and

that you deserve another shot at the gold

instead of the next in line.

Trufully I''m surprised that McCain isn''t
now ahead.,,,It may be those absolutely
absurd photos of him all over the sites.

I think it''s possible the Adobe PhotoShop
artist was drinking on the job.

The one where they had his face
baby-butt smooth was my favorite.

John was about ten or eleven
years old there.

Just to reward the repubs for the laughs
I think they should lie a little about
the polls and give John a
two-point lead.

Beware, beware!

The Republicans are tooling up for another OCTOBER SURPRISE!

McCain''s invasion of Ossetia didn''t seem to provoke the response he wanted. Look for an escalation there by the Georgians, or a collateral attack by some other Bush/Cheney/McCain cutout.

Or maybe another terror attack in the US by Republican operatives.

At least they''ll get Ben Laden out of the freezer for a statement or two.

Beware! Liars lurk here!

I can''''t help but wonder how the Secret Service is planning to protect Track Palin while he is stationed in Iraq.

You know barb I never thought of that. Until the election is over im sure they will give him desk duty even though he is army the can still put him on an aircraft carrier. Should the Repubs win they will pull him out in a flash just like they did Harry. To valuable a target not only with the people he serves with but more for the political gains.
